I made the mistake of buying a couple ebooks from Amazon. It took me a half hour to figure out how to download them and convert to a format that I could read on my phone. I'm sure it would have been easier and faster to just pirate them.
You could always check with your local library.
Most offer e-book loans for free. functionality to read the books is built into free apps like Aldiko
If you're interested in older books pr magazines, check out Project Gutenberg or the Internet Archive.
Some libraries offer free movie and television show downloads as well, or DVD and Blu-Ray loans....
and use it only for this somewhat Orwellian monitoring tool.
If they're counting keystrokes and doing screenshots, it doesn't take much effort to either do the work, or fake it to look like you're productive.
Do all your other "stuff" on your personal system...
I've worked with outsourcing firms who provided their own metrics to us for their contractors "productivity" which never reported the hours the contractors spent on google search for code somewhat relevant to their work.
I use an antenna for television, Netflix and streams.
If I had any other alternative for Internet services I'd try it, but DSL/ADSL isn't even available at speeds I can use. But it still feels like a sandpaper condom every month when I get my bill.
That's all the choices I have, and with Rectum being kicked out of NY, I'm scared Comcast will be taking over with their DL caps and even worse customer service.
The only other alternative I have is expensive, heavily capped data over 4G which is a non-starter when I'm using 1TB down a month on existing cable.
puts their picture in social media? I mean, if you're a sports star or actor, sure, but for everyone else, just stick to pictures of cats and your latest meal.
And if you use the same name in different social media, well derp...
Compensation is the only reason I ever have worked.
This kind of article seems to be arguing that management can appease appalling work conditions with a pat on the back, not actually rewarding them for accomplishments.
That being said, working with people you like and respect makes work less stressful and sometimes even fun.
If you're getting paid poorly, with people you would happily kill if you could only get away with it, it's probably way beyond time to leave.
I'm sure "remote" locations could benefit from decent satellite Internet service.
Getting quotes of $3K to run a mile of copper for local cable isn't what anyone wants to hear.
Latency, upload speeds and really low bandwidth caps during primetime are all pretty much deal killers with current satellite services.
Not to mention the whole rain/clouds/snow problems that satellite isn't solving anytime soon. I've lost power 10X more times than just cable in the last year.
I question that wording. I don't think it's exciting. If human trials prove out, I don't know of anyone who would prefer traditional treatment, well except the drug companies.
I doubt that any manufacturer would remove fuel efficiency improvements from an existing car model. It's not worth investing R&D time just to make a car worse. The most that could happen is it could slow the pace of fuel efficiency improvements, or maybe result in a few low-end cars that are slightly less efficient.
I'm guessing manufacturers will start to program car computers for power, instead of fuel efficiency. It's a cheap programming trick with no hardware changes required.
I'd be very concerned if any site I used for monetary purposes wasn't using HTTPS.
On the other hand, sites providing data services like streaming or news probably don't need to encrypt anything.
I mean it's not like the old days when you had to bolt on a hardware encryption module. HTTPS is pretty easy, and with modern processors not much of a burden.

Erm... That isn't the cost of a VR headset.
I'm not a fan of VR at this point for various reasons, but you can get a headset and controllers and the latest marvel game for $399
Perhaps you missed the article today:
https://hardware.slashdot.org/...
I have to get off slashdot for a bit so I can do some investing in companies that produce Dramamine. /s
I mean if you're paying $2,295 for a VR headset, you may as well pony up a few bucks for some quality drugs.

They should be allowed to do so, at the OS level.
The summary didn't mention if this "feature" was possible to disable.
I DO NOT want every freaking app to use a different DNS to resolve my queries.

what do you use to close the tab after 5s?
There's a reason there's an X on every tab. 1 2 3 4 5 X

5 seconds is how long I'll wait for a page to load before I close the tab.
I use no script,. privacy badger and uBlock Origin.
I've also been known to use links.

who's stock value increased well about 100% when they announced plans to do their own microcurrancy and Blockchain implementation.
All of that gain and another 40% decrease plummeted their stock value when they announced: "Just kidding."
Why not just play recordings of a very large barking dog? or repeated gunshots?
Close your computers and meet other people. They would also want to be discovered.
Do you want to be on a terrorist watch list?
Only terrorists meet other people, in public instead of never leaving home and the Internet, /s
and more importantly, how "secure" will the grid be? Will it be Internet connected?
I also wonder if Tesla will be selling user power concumption stats to advertisers? /s
Repetition Is the Key to Learning
Repetition Is the Key to Learning
And the best way to learn (for me) was to write down notes, and when an exam was coming up, I'd write anything important down.
If the brain couldn't directly remember during an exam, my fingers and pen or pencil actually would...
They should sue the road owners for helping piracy
You mean the electrical companies for providing electrons.
Their lawyers must have forgotten the concept of safe harbor as part of the DCMA act/
I remember starting downloads and going to sleep because it would take hours before a couple hundred MB file would finish.

actually calls anyone for the most part.
It's all about texting.
Because it it's the number of drinks consumed in the airport bar, I'm going to be their prime target of the day. /s?
If you have public notifications, don't bother.
Now, if you have a traveling roadshow with board members and large stockholders in Pillories in public places, that's an idea I can get behind.
"In some cases, utilities in California actually pay other utility companies to take the excess electricity off their hands."
I don't really understand paying to get rid of surplus electricity. Isn't the point to sell electricity?
Also is there additional room for more generators? Or to update the existing ones? I would hope generator technolofy has advanced since 1961
