if it can't do proper HD then it's not interesting. there are plenty of tiny low res video players on the market now.

Even at it's native resolution heavily compressed h264 might be too much to decode in real time. Then again, it seems the chipset supports hardware acceleration according to another post. If that works it would work out.

But it's hard to tell if 720p or 1080i would work even so. Those resolutions can be hard to get working properly even with dedicated hardware decoders. (I work with IPTV technologies.)

It's great to see someone accepting the facts: Kids will get access to porn one way or another. For a parent the only critical thing is to make it clear that sex in a porn movie is as realistic as fighting in an action movie... It's a fantasy, and should be dealt with as such. Sex is a natural part of human behavior, so what is so problematic with watching some porn every now and then? Better to brainwash yourself with porn than violence, if you ask me...

  7. Re:Obvious? on Diet of Fast Food and Candy May Cause Alzheimer's · · Score: 1

That last statement shows ignorance. Fast food is much more expensive than home cooked healthy food. Even high-end, organic, hippy-store produce is cheap and fish is one of the cheapest and healthiest forms of protein. You don't eat poorly because of cost you eat poorly because of convenience as cooking for yourself is time consuming and doesn't fit well with our modern chaotic schedules.

Incorrect. In my local supermarket saturated fat -heavy minced meat costs about 6 Euros / kilo. Fish costs 15-20 Euros / kilo. We cook all our meals ourselves at home, but the ingredients could be better if we had the funds.

I guess I should point out that living in Finland also means that most vegetables need to be grown in greenhouses or shipped from abroad. This further increases the price of enjoying a healthy diet.

Sadly, the price on vegetables in Finland where I live is such, that it's a hell of a lot more expensive to go on a healthy diet. In fact, a chicken salad does indeed cost more than a McMeal, at least for the same energy content.

This is why I'm sad that a real version of The Neverending Story hasn't been made. The 80's films are just about about as true to the book as a movie about Jesus Christ leaving out the whole 'God' bit... The book on the other hand is FSCKing awesome.

The hard part is that really great movies aren't guaranteed to make really good profits. Maybe there should be a way to fund a movie with micropayments, so that true fans could help fund filming great stories, or something? In any case the core problem still is that there's always more than one way to interpret a great story. Just take the Bible or the Qu'ran as prime examples: There are huge numbers of decent Christians and Muslims out there, and there are some fanatical idiots of both varieties too. All of these four groups largely tap their beliefs from suitably interpreted versions of the same stories.

I've never tried lively, but I did give Second Life (with it's rather amazing content creation and scripting abilities) a try. The way I see it there's one major obstacle to these worlds: The "ghost town effect".

It's very resource intensive to simulate a 3D world, especially a vast one. Making the world big is eeexpeeensive, and the power required to run an arbitrary world is huge.

With MMORPGs people are paying each month, and a lot of the on screen action relates to NPCs. In something like Second Life every character is a real person with associated lag etc. It's also impossible to optimize a user generated world like a game, which imposes certains limits within a level.

All in all, Second Life at least is a huge world with comparatively small amounts of people scattered all over. The world just doesn't seem "right" when you go exploring, and most areas are empty. Sure, people gather here and there, but overall it feels like the tech just isn't there yet...
