Just by quickly scanning the article, it looks like their world domination is intended to hinge on the "Facebook Connect" thing for websites --- which Google already has an answer to: the "Google Friend Connect". (Correct me, if you indulge in reading 20 page advertising articles about nothing.)
All in all, saying that "Facebook is going to dethrone Google" sounds to me as saying "Somalian pirates are going to defeat US army and then dominate the western society."
But to stay objective, Google should seriously do something about the abomination named Orkut, which runs on.aspx. But I guess they don't care too much - their intent is to social-networkize the whole web using open protocols - and open thinking - which is why they will succeed.
..a different technique to solve your problem -- enlist as a red-cross or similar org volunteer and go see and live the life in Somalia and similar countries. There's a high chance than when you come back to UK, you'll be the happiest man on earth.
I will append my opinion here, because parent is probably the only comment that mentions licensing.
Can't believe the licensing option wasn't mentioned more in this discussion - if you've got a killer IP, then approach the MegaCorp's competitors, and offer non-exclusive licensing deals to the MegaCorp *and* their competitors, at the same time.
That will make them think twice about developing the product themselves from scratch and losing the edge during that time.
Put the first money you make towards a patent application, assuming you are a prior (first) art.
Don't sell out in these times, if you've got a place to live and something to eat, the money is just a piece of paper. Money can dramatically devalue from one day to another, MegaCorps can fall or downsize to the bone.
It all depends on whether you really believe in your idea.
Exactly as the name says, it will be in development forever. It's the customer expectations based on this misunderstanding, that was misguided.
On a more serious note though, maybe now it's the time for the company to do the right thing and open source / free domain the game for everybody to finish. Even if in the form of a Quake3 mod, or based on its engine.
No matter how much thinking or logic you apply on a problem, you never think it completely through, because we don't know everything, thus we might as well know nothing. Therefore, by logical continuation, everything is faith. Even this very statement.
And don't be so sure:)
No waiting for a manufacturer to provide open source drivers. Better cooperation with other open source projects, like Xorg. Perhaps faster progress if the number of open source developers exceeds the number of developers of competing proprietary products, hourly/motivation/quality-wise.
They have, but the only effect of that was - upon seeing two crew members talking in a sound proof area - an immediate suspicion of mission endagerment followed by ejection of said sound proof area to the outer space and blasting it to pieces with an ion cannon, as to lower the probability of its return to an acceptable value.
Now how many flying LHC's we've been able to observe in our universe, that we can say for sure that our LHC will be safe. Cosmic rays hitting neutron stars may or may not be the same thing - we don't know for sure.
That said, I can't wait for LHC to operate and bring results.
I can't use ATI's OSS drivers for my HD 3850, if you mean the radeon or radeonhd drivers. RadeonHD is getting there though.
NVidia world I don't know much, but I've seen a lot of forum posts where people complained.
Proper graphics drivers from ATI and NVidia (with a proper compositing X server, that is).
Currently I can choose between perfect 2D + no 3D vs. perfect 3D + sluggish 2D vs. compiz + blinking video + bad 3D.
Somehow not a reason to switch from Linux though.
And since I'm in the requesting mode, a Flash and Skype for iPhone would be nice, thanks!
Real speech recognition and communication will require a lot of power. As well as real 3D games and other relaxation/leisure environments. Current games are just Wolfenstein with more details. Human brain is at never ending quest for being entertained - you show it something new, and it won't want the old one anymore. We are underutilizing our hardware now but that's because it is not fast enough to run next gen applications, or because we haven't yet discovered how to make such applications. But it will come.
Sure, over time, with Ubuntu releases, there are new features added and many things improve.
But my general feeling is that the distro is slowly falling apart.
I'm 64-bit user and Feisty definitelly looks worse to me than Gutsy used to.
I'm talking mainly about broken application packages (Semantik, Gxine, etc.), also video support worsened, but that's more of ATI issue.
Also, I'm not too bothered by always ending up downloading a kernel from kernel.org, but the distro quality seems to be going down over time.
Anyone else feels the same?
I've heard rumors that Ibex should be "better" again, and I definitelly will be looking to Bugzilla and ububntuforums before trying it..
Yeah but that was the period of $170 bbl oil prices, so ESA refused to stop by any orbital gas stations and instead used the reentry parachute as an ion sail. Cheap bastards.
will only serve to put us past the point of possibly having been able to answer that question
are you sure? what if it will enable us to understand matter to the point where we know how proteins fold, or how to make better nanotech, generate clean energy, etc.?
LHC is probably more important than half the earth's population starving for some time.
to protect from 4 node failure, is the storage overhead 1:5 or do you use some compression technique?

Facebook: blah blah dominate blah blah
Google: yawn (removes Facebook from search index)

Well, second step is Open Source Factories.

So what's the frequency, Kenneth?

launch successful which sent over a 1000 space scientists
All India's 1000 space scientists sent to space together! Space exploration the India way, baby! And don't come back until you work it out pals!
Gives a whole new meaning to the term "Wet dream".

Q: can you fit 2 meters wide car into a 1 meter wide garage?
A: But I wouldn't say that any car could be wide.
Busted. In fact, don't mind the question, the answer is enough.
... these machines are showing they we're merely a clock cycle away from true AI.
And slashdot.org is merely a clock cycle from entering the break.com / digg.com category.
