    RAM goes away because BIOS tells it so (by cutting power or otherwise). In future systems, portion of RAM could easily be preserved on battery power, and cleaned could be only that portion, which needs it, if any. Solid state media would of course be used as a backup, but not necessary to be synced too often.
    The only reason why we don't do this now is that huge L1 caches (future RAMs) are difficult to make and thus expensive. (IMHO)

    If you really want to know why is it bad to have closed source drivers, check Nvidia's and ATI's linux driver forums. Example1, example2, example3.
    Closed source development, compared to the open source one, sucks the monkey's ass.
    ATI released the specs, at least partially, and this is the result. That's why I didn't buy Nvidia.
    I'm currencly using the binary driver from ATI, while waiting for the open source radeonhd to be completed.

    1. the improvements in the processing efficiency and power are nice, but there's still the training time required for each specific captcha. So until strong AI, teams of humans will always be needed.
    2. what if the captcha creators switch to logical questions? Like "can 2 meters wide car pass through 1 meter wide bridge?" - these type of questions can be easy to generate, but hard to answer by AI without very large memory and a good reasoning.

    I suggest you read more about the AI. Saying "AI is going to change /insert some little thing here/" is an act of ignorance - strong AI is going to change everything, and in none of the ways that we are able to predict.

    Does anything you said change the fact that ReiserFS is the best filesystem ever? (For me, that is.) It doesn't, and neither I ever needed any customer support for v3, so as I already said, I just hope Reiser will continue to code. I'm sorry for Nina too, but threre's the Justice System that takes care of that.
    The arrogance and annoyance you mention - perhaps that's a part of the dark side of his personality he will now have time to reconsider.

    that they will allow him to write code during all his prison time, perhaps even giving him some extra level of isolation so he's not distracted by other inmates who do not write code.
    He's failed, but he can still be a huge contribution in the area where he did not fail.

    What I meant was (mainly) a situation, where you *have to* wait for a patch (update) to come out for some problem that's stopping or otherwise hurting your business, whereas being on open sourced OS you could just hack the code as a temporary solution (or compile from source). You usually don't switch your OS and migrate all your business' infrastructure in 10 days or 'on demand'.
    The other form of ownage is that you don't really know what's in the closed source system - backdoors by secret services, exploitable by 3rd party? Very likely.
    I must confess I'm too a bit owned in this 2nd regard, as I use Skype on Linux. But then, I can switch that one easily.
    Oh yeah, and got I willingly triggered by a Troll. 1% market share? The fucking Internet runs on Linux.

    You opened my eyes, thank you. I'm going to purchase a non-crap OS (I will pay extra for the Ultimate version that allows me to do everything), where I can choose between playing a mp3 or downloading a file, because it can't do both reliably at the same time.
    You sir should understand one thing - by using closed source OS software, you are fucking owned by whoever creates that software, and dependent completely on their mercy. Now go install your genuine 20 GB service packs while listening to the beautiful sounds of rin tin tin tin NTFS raping your harddrive.

    2. run statistics on the names of users who submitted comments modded as funny
    3. repeat for other sites

    Until then, it's still only hypothetical.
    It would be cheap for Microsoft to do this via proxies, but also pretty ineffective. 99% of people just use what comes with their hardware, if it runs the stuff they are used to.

    Maybe a law should be introduced, which makes it impossible for patent holders to charge more for the use of their patents, than a fair share of the profit of the project the patent is utilized in.

    It may seem difficult to fairly determine the significance of various patents used for a project, but hey, if one can value a real estate property, one can learn how to do it for patents.

    Or just limit the patent enforceability to one year, so the inventors will need to hurry up and actually deliver products to the market. Hell, that's even better.

    You will not have to log in, just to wait a minute.
    My estimation is that you will go crazy inside of 5 hours.

    I forgot to mention one thing about the SDHC card - I was talking about the ones that have USB connector built-in on them - so you can really use one wherever you'd use an USB key.

    Well there will still be things like Adobe Flash and Skype not working on the GDium. I *hate* being a hostage of these closed source apps, but it's the current reality.

    One note to the Flash Key - I think I prefer an SDHC card, which I can safely transfer inside my Phone's SD card slot (thus have my encrypted root fs always with me:), event if phones don't support SDHC cards yet.
