I only expect you to ditch it if you value the Mac/OSX platform enough to want to switch.
Obviously you don't. I'm not sure why that's over zealous. If you were into modifying cars for a hobby would you expect to take all your old tweaks from a ford to a toyota? If you play video game consoles do you expect to take all your old games from sony to microsoft's platform?
Why is what I'm saying so hard for people to accept? It's a different platform, it's not built to enable you use things built for a competing platform.
Yes, I do expect you to ditch all of your old stuff.
Point being, if you don't want to ditch windows, then why do you want to switch in the first place? You don't. That's the bottom line. Just like you say, many of your old games will never be ported or emulated correctly on a mac--I have games you can't even run on a modern windows pc anymore. I ended up throwing them out instead of keeping a 486 running dos sitting around.
Why would you need or want to? No one NEEDS OSX. If they prefer it then fine. If you need a windows machine for what you do, then why are you buying a mac?
I'm also upset that my nintendo DS won't run the PSP operating system, I mean come on, they're both hand held gaming consoles, I should be able to dual boot, right?!/snark.
Dual booting is nice for a play thing, and in some very specific instances, but not as a general practice. There's a lot of hardware you could get that's nearly as nice, for cheaper.
Honestly, what's the draw to this? Back in the mid 90's I understood it completely with windows/linux. Linux didn't provide what most people needed to be productive back then, and costs were prohibitive to have dual machines for most of the people that were interested in linux at the time.
Now we have a high end (and high priced) peice of hardware, that runs an operating system that provides everything you need to be productive, and it's polished as heck. So why would you want to dual boot to anything? You can get the performance out of many other peices of hardware for cheaper if you want to run windows.
I've tried lots of firefox extensions, some I love, some I hate, few work correctly, or as described. Such is life with open source, but I'm not complaining about that!
I honestly want to know, why do people want some of these things in their browser? I like firefox because it's relatively clutter free, and fast. I don't want to add bloat. I want a web browser. Luckily these things don't come standard so I can be happy, and the gadget people can be happy too--but isn't it better to have seperate applications for specific purposes? Are these the people that want their alarm clocks to make toast for them, or their cars to wash their clothes, etc?
I'd say they're still just as relevant as they were, which is some, but not all that much.
They have value, but only to a small subset of people. They're great things, but 9 times out of 10 if you know about the existance of a LUG it's something like preaching to the choir. They appeal to and are accessible by university students, or tech geeks. Definitely an invaluable resource for helping each other through configuration/installation, and a lot of fun but not really any more or less valuable than any other operating/computing system centric group. Example: there have been mac user groups for decades now, and they're great for mac users, but pretty much irrelevant and off the radar to those that aren't already converts.
I'm using an actual windows share to stream the videos off of. I haven't run into any trouble except when my 802.11g signal strength is too low. I've never seen a divx that is 2gig, if that was the case I'd just burn it to a dvd and put it in the drive:)
That's a good point. There are some of the higher res/frame HD encodings it chokes on now, however your athlon 64 really should have no issue. My iMac 1.8ghz does just fine with x264.
I've been using a modded xbox plus the fantastic xbox media center to play my fansubs for well over a year. It's the only reason I own an xbox. The simplicity of setup (relative,) size, and power is really unmatched. Depending on the encoding, XBMC will even play some HD content.
Yes it's not a PVR, but it gets most of your goals done in about $100-130 and an hour or two.
1) You can delete them. 2) These are provided by AOL, not random companies. 3) This is a free service, and it's theirs. You have absolutely NO right to complain about their business practices. If it bothers you, don't use AIM or their servers.
This dose of "stop your whining, you spoiled unrealistic brats," has been brought to you by the grumpy old techy (tm).
Why does any successful company instantly become evil, or at least suspected as being so? Not everyone is out to get you, even if they ARE out to get your money.
I for one thing 100 songs on a phone is quite a lot, and I'm not sure why you'd need or want more. How much time do people want to spend using their cell phone battery to listen to music anyway? It'd be nice in a pinch if you're stuck and bored, but I've got to assume that people have things to do. I mean that's roughly 5 hours of music there.
I never saw people complaining about how cassettes or cds could only fit ~12-20 songs. If this is what we as a culture are complaining about nowadays I think we must be doing pretty well overall!
I have yet to see any launch titles that seems an upgrade over the existing xbox. As the existing xbox division has lost 4 billion dollars so far, I don't have a lot of faith this new generation is going to do much better.
Who wants an xbox360 and why? Where is the draw? All I see is a huge marketing effort to generate a buzz.. but about WHAT?
I've been using linux for over a decade. It's a wonderful OS system for servers. The UI has finally started to develop into something nice... but it's still not ready for prime time.
A lot of the things mentioned in the article were mentioned 10 years ago. How much progress have we really made?
Any entry level budget PC which can be had a Frys, Compusa, Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc etc for about $200, with an upgraded video card and MAYBE upgraded ram will run today's games.
No it won't run them at top resolution at 120fps... but who cares. Anything above 30fps is very playable. Anything above 60fps is just pure gravy.
Apple is constantly having events, has a great image, works to make themselves visible and desirable. Of course they get media bias.
What's the alternative?
HEADLINE: MS STILL DOING THE SAME THING THEY WERE 4 YEARS AGO
Apple puts out updates very regularly, usually substantial updates. They have not only pretty software, but pretty hardware. They have an image. To put it simply, they're easy to make into a story.
I've been hearing about this for days, but haven't noticed any slow links, or down sites... anywhere. I hit lots of major sites a day, minor too. I have a few webservers in various parts of the world... and I didn't have a single blip anywhere.
What exactly got blacked out? I know the issue, but just never saw it's effect anywhere.
I only expect you to ditch it if you value the Mac/OSX platform enough to want to switch.

Why would you want to buy a mac for gaming?
You can buy a PC cheaper and have your games.
Yes, I do expect you to ditch all of your old stuff.

You also missed my point.
Why would you need or want to? No one NEEDS OSX. If they prefer it then fine. If you need a windows machine for what you do, then why are you buying a mac?
You entirely missed my point. If OSX is not what you want, there are PLENTY of other laptops out there that can perform as well, for less money.
So why would these people you're speaking of want to buy the laptop to begin with?
I'm also upset that my nintendo DS won't run the PSP operating system, I mean come on, they're both hand held gaming consoles, I should be able to dual boot, right?! /snark.

I'm sure most of today's kids have seen Labirynth.

For the force of people behind the phones, terminals, and computers of the world, what reason do they have to dress in any way other than comfortable?
Honestly, I'm curious, what's the point? The clothes make the man? Professionalism to whom? The person on the other end of the phone or screen?

I completely agree with you in that the concepts are the same.
But I think they should've let MS keep their browser in personally. I'm pro capitalism and all.

That was the first time I've ever laughed out loud reading slashdot.
