  1. VHS vs Beta all over again. on Microsoft, Intel back HD DVD over Blu-ray · · Score: 1

MS and Intel have a lot of weight. This will probably cause both standards to be released, and then the superior marketing will win.

With MS and Intel backing, superior marketing will likely be HD-DVD, and again we will be left with the inferior format.

While I don't think ranting on the web is the answer to these problems, I really wish there was a better means of finding honest, competent doctors. I have dealt with a lot of quacks in the past few years, but that may be my area (South Florida.)

I don't think blogging about it does much except make both parties look bad.

If you survived hurricane katrina and need to file a FEMA claim, the likelyhood that you have a working PC (or at least access to it) is pretty low. Most people that will NEED FEMA aid are going to be filing via PAPER or PHONE, probably with assistance from their shetler.

These claims aren't for frivolity. If you have a working computer and have access to it, you don't need to file. If you didn't have other insurance and are not in a dire situation then it's really on you to repair.

Regardless of what IE7 supports or doesn't I'd like to encourage all designers and developers for the web to code according to standards.

Ignore IE only tricks, make your sites work according to standards. If IE can't render them correctly that's impetus for MS to fix their app. If users can't view your site correctly with IE make sure they're provided with alternatives, and that they know it's IE at fault.

  22. Arrogance? No. on Microsoft's Personnel Puzzle · · Score: 1

Microsoft is one of the few large companies that has a brain about hiring. I could go to any number of IT or Software positions at the drop of a hat all it takes is a nice resume, an average ability to hold conversation and a bit of BS + confidence -- NO SKILLS.

Microsoft's clever little quizes actually put people on the spot and make them show that they can think instead of only doing what's expected. I think it's brilliant.

It's HARD to find good candidates looking at resumes. You can chuck about 50% of them off the bat, and interview the best of the remaining but there is absolutely no guarantee any of those people will have what it takes. Even after an interview I'm often uncertain if the person has the skills I need, or just good sales and BS skill.

  23. Fansubs definitely beneficial on The Business of Anime · · Score: 2, Insightful

I run an anime club in Florida. Florida has 4 good sized anime conventions a year (3000+ attendees.) Our club has about 1500 members. If it weren't for fansubs there would be a very small fraction of anime fans and releases.

Fansubs are the primary avenue we find out about series, become attached to them, and subsequently buy them as they are released. We're ravenous. We buy the dvds even if we have the fansubs. We buy action figures, posters, art books, etc. Most of the members are college kids without a lot of money, and they still buy.

I can't tell you how many times I've been at a convention, talking to directors of american releases (usually voice actors themselves,) or employees of distribution companies about fan subs. The vast majority download them and watch them themselves. Their take on it is "don't buy them, don't buy bootlegs, don't seek them out after the show is licensed and airing/available here."

I can't think of any better marketing research than looking at what's popular in fansubs.

Yeah, some people will download a fansub, and not buy the show. Some maliciously, some not. Most cases people just check the show out, don't like it, so don't buy it.

Very important to every aspect of media piracy in this information age:

Just because someone "steals" something over the internet doesn't mean they would have bought it had they not been able to download it.

almost assurance that some clever hacker will make 'X for x86' run on commodity hardware, I'm doubting the willingness of most IT and development houses to even give the Carbon and Cocoa APIs a first glance.

Doesn't this make the platform all the MORE attractive? People like OSX, people are INFATUATED with it. The main barrier people have is the expensive (and sometimes viewed as inferior) hardware. Now that's not an issue, and if OSX for x86 is able to run on my crappy bargain basement PC, wouldnt' that mean MORE market for OSX software?

Why wouldn't you? You're going to be running the same apps, on the same platform (software) and it's a good processor.

The pc market has *never* been a "wait six months then buy," market. Everything changes too fast. Why would people deny themselves the tools they want (or need) waiting for the upgrades? Upgrades and changes will ALWAYS bee just over the horizon.
