I am a touch doubtful that Apple would do that. They tried in the past (opening up the computers for clones) but I think were embittered by the experience. However, as far as Apple is concerned, I cannot really see ANYTHING that can go bad here. For one thing, Apple controls the hardware. If another company, or hell, even M$, wants to release an OS for Macs it doesn't hurt Apple's sales cuz they are the only one to buy hardware from. They are a monopoly too you know:) If they did this for OSX, I can see lots of geeks debugging/adding usefull features/etc. for Apple. It can't go wrong, and they'll get kudos from us for beating M$ to it too... I (for one) am really, and I mean REALLY, looking forward to OSX. I want to buy a G4 with OSX and drop a Linux partition on it. Imagine the possiblities...
-Elendale (What's with Slashdot's color? On my computer this story looks all red and stuff. My problem, or theirs?)
Well if you do see this, and if four hundred other people already haven't posted (I've only read 200 replies, but none contained my thoughts so I'll spam too!) this, take time to read it. For a long time we Slashdotters have been complaining (and rightly so) that big corps refuse to change/admit problems/take out the trash/etc. and I think that WAVE or whatever they want to be called (No Nazis please, all I ask...) is responding at least semi-appropriatly. If Pinkerton shows and laughs in our faces, I'll be first in line to flame him; but for now I think that he is willing to accept critisms is a Good Thing. Hopefully some of the issues will be resolved, and I am confident that somewhere in the 5000 posts this story is sure to get my ideas will be voiced so I won't bother here. I know a few rather irresponsible kids who wouldn't hesitate to report someone annonymously as the next Columbine (Actually, this happened to me) when they feel the least bit threatened. These are kids who most people don't trust with cars, voting, drinking/smoking (though I'm opposed to both anyway...), etc. but to let someone 'report' a suspicous activity is asking for trouble. At least take the anonimity out of it.
-Elendale (well what do you know... I suppose I did put a bit of my view into that...)
Heh. I was going to post it, but you beat me to it:) In any case, how exactly is Sony going to inforce this? Do they track where they sold and start knocking on doors? What about CD burners? Couldn't (theoretically) a guy burn it to CDs and ship it all over the world? Just a thought.
It's whatever YOU say it is. It's your site and you can sell it for any price you want. The domain (afaik) is your as you bought the rights to it. If the guys who are trying to buy it don't like your price, that's tough luck!
Ok, that's just plain wrong. Not the Katz article, but the subject. Most of the kids I went to elementary school with were not even responsible enough to be trusted with, say, a pencil. I borrowed out several pencils that dissapeared, and this is something that happens all the time. The point isn't that pencil theft is big, but rather: what will happen when you give these same kids control over other's lives???
You're a witch! No I'm not! See! There! You denied it! You're a witch!
Actually design strength (talking about toughness here, not lifting/crushing/weaponry strength) would be vital to a high jump. You would need an incredibly high tensile and compressive strength to leap even normal (human) heights without trashing your suit. The problem is that high compressive strength comes at the cost of weight and high tensile comes at the cost of compressive, at least for the most part. I don't really see this being used by the military that much. More likely it will be bought by geeks like us for no real reason other than to have one.
-Elendale (Of course I want one. What did you think?!)
I assume you are talking about something like the 'dummy plug' from Neon Genesis. It would fake a real body and all its functions while accepting orders from somewhere else. Obviously this is not going to be as effective as a real human would be, but for extreme environments (say, inside a volcano or maybe in an area of high-radiation) it would be a benefit. Oh, and its live not life.
I thought AOL was going to leave Frankel and his projects alone... at least, that was part of the deal (as I understood it). Unfortunately, Nullsoft probably has no choice but to comply to the big wussy AOL. Hopefully this project will remain going under open-source authors:) Can't kill it now AOL! Oh well...
-Elendale (HEY! Slashdot is being recognized by everyone! Go us!)
Well I looked at it for a while and it looks exactly the same as it did 150 years ago. Unfortunately I don't believe our modern 'brute force' techniques will return anything. I think this cyrptograph is actually based on an algorithm more complex than 'replace a with b, x with i, ad infinitum'. One possibility is that the different positions of the characters mean different things. Alternatively, each character may actually represent a word or idea instead of a different character. One other thought I had was that the first 'word'- Dr- is actually Dr and not something else. It is entirely possible this note starts with a title, and if so that might be used to break the rest of the code.
Now that I'm done with that, here are my thoughts on this little demon. The different arrangements of characters most likely mean something. There are 8 different permutations for each character: up, forward, lowercase; down, forward, lowercase; up, forward, uppercase; down, forward uppercase; up, backward, lowercase; etc. Additionally, the entire work may read left to right, right to left, top to bottom, or bottom to top. In addition to that, there is a complete lack of periods. Perhaps different character positions are equivalent to end of sentance, end of line, end of paragraph, etc. Something else I wonder about is the backward letters. One possibility is that these backward letters actually form a second note embedded inside the first (read only forward letters or only backward letters). Just some thoughts.
-Elendale (Alternatively, whoever sent this may have had no idea how to use a printing press. I think this is much more likely)
I may be a paranoid nutcase, but something like this would seem to make at least a little sense. What if Poe had created this as a 'last laugh' type of work. Print it in a newspaper and let it lay. Then include a little piece of the answer in every one of his works. Something to the effect of: every 3rd word in his works arranged backwards will unlock the puzzle. Just a thought.
-Elendale (alternatively, he may have just dropped the thing of frustration...)
I'm sure someone has said this before, but its still hilarious. SP:BLU is all about censorship, but the song that was nominated by the supposed 'movie intellectuals' is getting censored... Erm... does anyone else see a problem here? -Elendale (<censored><censored><censored><censored><censored >)
HA! That would be a riot, especially if the put a 'hidden message' about censorship in the lyrics that got censored... wait... not enough to censor... must make song more profane... *rofl*
How much faster will this really be? If these guys don't quite with Mhz... sorry, Ghz = faster pretty quick I'm gonna go berserk. When was the last time intel significantly reworked their chipset? So far as I'm aware, these are still rather similar to the 500-600 Mhz P3 chips except at 1 Ghz... *grumble, rant, rave, etc*
When Q3 first came out, a friend of mine (who happened to be a girl) thought it would be cute to use a nude pic of herself as a skin. It actually looked (fairly) realistic. In any case, when she would play you could tell who was actually a guy (or gay) because they would just sit there and stare at the model while she nailed 'em with rockets:)
That said, yes: There is a 'competative advantage' to being a hot girl even in shooters...
-Elendale (of course, most of the guys asked for the skin, but she fragged them again while they typed... gems like that only come along so often)
one of the nicest (something about 'nicest looks wrong... *grumble about english profs*) things about that site is:
Note: Stampede Linux is not affiliated with Stampede Technologies in any way. If you came here looking for RAS software, please visit http://www.stampede.com.
While this may seem like a small touch, with all the cyber-squating going on recently its nice to see someone point out that they are different from another company. Its free advertising for the other Stampede, I looked at their page just to see what it was!
-Elendale (looking forward to stampede and what it will bring)
HAHA! I love it! +4, Inciteful:) If you didn't catch that, he said the 'Katz you suck!' flamebait would be labeled +4 inciteful, as opposed to insightful.
-Elendale (ok, so its kinda lame, but its classic too!)
How the fsck did that get labeled as 2: insightful??? Not that I don't agree, I couldn't agree more (and additionally, the flogs need to be set on fire first) but that's flamebait if I ever saw it. Moderaters must be napping today...
-Elendale (look at moderation history if you don't believe me)
We would need several Robots. Also, we should make sure that:
1: They are not modelled completely after anime robots, or Japan will be able to defeat them:)
2: They are all different so the US has to change strategy for each one (i.e. 1 voltron type, 1 EVA type, etc)
Another thing we could do is to form a "Hacker's Guild", which would be somewhat like a "Mage's Guild". It would be able to train, house, and utilize the off-beat and brilliant people of the world to (mainly) protect themselves. IMHO, wizards/mages of legend are much like hackers of today. Both are primarily self taught, though often learn from a great master. Both are employed by those rich enough to do so (Kings&Corps). Both are rather misunderstood by the public in general. The list goes on, but I'm sure you see my point. Well, actually I have no point but I wanted to use that analogy.
-Elendale (And also, there are those dedicated to furthering mankind, and those dedicated to ruling the world... I'll let you choose who fits where)
This looks like something we have been wanting for a long time but are unable to create for ourselves: A (true) user-friendly GUI. Apple and AOL are two companies famous for creating easy to use interfaces. While AOL's interface is the equivalent of a straight jacket, it allows just about anyone to start up. You don't even have to click on the CD to install anymore, just put it in and click 'yes' to everything (save of course that evil, evil, default browser question). Hopefully this will get Linux converts on reputation alone. Perhaps it will add some Mac versatility too! I noticed a post about playing 15 year old games on the mac, I still have a conversion of Centipede on my Mac from 1987:)
Heh, I have to agree and disagree here. While I think that women have their place among the top ranks of geeks (after all, it took a woman to get the first computer working correctly) the 'genetics thing' does work against them. Mind you, there is a 6% size difference between abstract reasoning, whereas maybe 1% of the population are hackers. Assuming brain sizes follow standard bell/sine curves then it would reason that there are MORE than enough qualified women to be in CS. The brain difference exists, but is not enough to account for very low numbers of female CS majors. My guess is that the problem exists in the nurture half (oh dear, there goes my karma for the day) instead of nature. Oh well. Oh, and about men not thinking about their majors: Of course most men don't think at all about their majors. Just pick and get lucky or something, after all college is just a big bar... Of course, as in everything, there are exceptions
-Elendale (and of course, most people only use about 4% of their brain, probably less...)
Good points:) In my opinion, they nominated Blame Canada because it has more than just foolishness. The lyrics of the song (top posts are the lyrics, so I won't bother repeating) are about the parents of South Park who decide to blame canada before "someone blames us." That is, to remove the blame from its cause (the parents) and to place it on something else. This happens all the time, look at the columbine thing (tho w/ that i don't think the parents were the cause, but its the same blame effect) and you'll understand what I mean.
-Elendale (my mom could have been in that song and it would fit...)
I should be offended... but I'm not... Unfortunately, most US citizens (notice we refer to ourselves as Americans, as though we own America. Problem is, what about South America? Or Canada for that matter?) are more clueless about foreign countries/anything beyond 15 km away than they are about, say, Linux. We don't know there is anything other than the US, and if told there is we try to change them to be better and just like us. *blah* NOW I remember why I am going to move out of country in a year or two...
