between consumer and business "grade" anymore. Except maybe winXP pro vs. home. I've got a "consumer grade" HP laptop (athlon) and it has integrated 100bt, cd burner, etc, etc. Tons of businesses buy the "consumer" versions as they are cheap. Is the stuff that *most* people do at work that different from what they do at home so as to require a better computer? Quite the contrary, in my (consulting) experience, most home pc's are faster than the machines people use at work. Doesn't hold true for companies with a bazillion computers that want some kind of management capability but those companies don't make up the majority of businesses anyways...
but the only real competitor (on a grand scale, wifi is still too small) to the baby bells wrt internet connectivity are the cable companies. They could swoop in and make a fucking killing but they appear to be disorganized and generally unenthusiastic about the prospect. Comcast (in my area) has a "Business Cable" deal that gives you 1.5/512 (or something like that) with a couple of static IP's for $99 a month and that includes the modem. As an added bonus, once you get things ready, they install it in about 2 days. This is in contrast to Verizon whom it usually takes 30-45 days to get their shit together. The only problem is that you have to bombard Comcast with a steady stream of phone calls to get their ass in gear to get the installation pricing together. I've always thought that if they would allow me to sell it, I could do a land-office business in it....
was "after a few minutes we saw a toxic smoke" etc, etc. I don't know why but that made me laugh. For some reason I have visions of some geek smelling that shit and saying "that's not so ACK ACK ACK...thump".
This is interesting. I was invited to my 10th class reunion and came to the same conclusion the instant I opened the envelope. Fuck that bunch of idiots. The ones that I'm interested in, I keep in contact with. The rest of them can screw off.
who knows but being a part of DEC, they went to Compaq when DEC was sold and then Compaq went to HP so there probably wasn't much focus on making it work. Back in the.com days, i remember hearing people saying that Compaq bought DEC just to get AV.
You know, when I was a kid I remember reading about these in some magazine. The article indicated that NASA was running a contest (sort of). Send in an idea of how to use these things and they'd send you a piece. Didn't matter how dumb the idea was (it *was* a kids magazine). My friend and I sent in ideas, he got his piece of wire and I never got mine. Bastards. Never got his wire to do much anyways...
You need new friends...:) Why did you carry *all* the water? When we go hiking, even my 5 year old daughter carries some (but not much) of the water...
Yeah, they needed an R2 unit on that thing to wheel to the outside and fix something with that retractable arm and/or it's laser welder. On the other hand, this was a computer crash...can an R2 unit hit ctrl/alt/del ???
Title says it all. Who wants to spend hours trying to get shit to work when you could just intall and play under windows. I think this is the most over-looked piece of the pie. Not all of us have endless hours to piss away trying to make things work. I use linux where it makes sense, for everything else, I use windows.
at the place I used to work, we had alot of reel-to-reel tape drives. When we finally unplugged the pr1me computer (1992 or so) we had to buy a reel unit that worked with a pc. we still have like one old 386 that the unit works with. It's the only machine we have that works with that unit for some reason.
I bought one of these, along with the pc connection kit. The speed is ok but it still "seems" slow. I had great signal but it takes forever to actually contact the site. Once it starts rolling it isn't too bad but the time it takes (4-5 seconds) to get the transfer rolling sucks. Bottom line is that it's not bad for ocassional use - checking email and whatnot when you're going from place to place but I wouldn't want it as my primary net connection.
I know this is off-topic but I can't help it. I was reading one of these threads about telemarketers awhile ago and someone mentioned that whenever one called, he simply replied with "corflakes" I thought it was the funniest thing ever and I've been doing it ever since. I'm not as good as he is/was though. I've only gotten up to saying it 10 times....
I'm not sure what to say. On one hand, I see your point about the cost being equal to a hardcover book. On the other hand, I see the old "charge whatever the market will bear" coming to the fore. I suppose that in my mind, it was his version of throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. The shadowmarch site looks interesting, btw.
I agree about the impulse purchase part but imagine if you could setup some sort of client to schedule downloads for viewing in the future. Kinda setup your own tv schedule? That would be cool. oh, btw, how was King's effort "dishonest" ?
that shipped as well. There might also have been a "Premium" flavor that I remember seeing.

do you?
Tauzin wrote that my ass....I'll bet he doesn't even know what half those words mean.

is this the son of Norman Vincent that you're quoting?

and that is crap. The ATI & nvidia cards aren't supported. This is too bad.

So, in Germany you can't buy 3rd-party parts for your car? Seems strange. Parts must cost a fortune.
What's to stop 'em? Not like that can't afford it. The only thing I see stopping them would be pride.

New Thread
- U can make coffee with new proc
- I can bake a Turkey with it
- No, I can spit-cook a yak with it
- offtopic rant about u damned meat eaters.
wouldn't it? The noise from the tires on pavement would be there but that's it. Kinda like riding a bicycle.

I hate the phrase "chilling effect." Nevertheless, it's a good point. I also wonder about the bandwidth cost on Warner's end.
