For this particular situation, yes, Ubuntu's popularity does mean it is the best distro. Ubuntu is the first Linux that's had "mass market" appeal, bringing in people from outside the *NIX world, due to its easy of install and use, but also for being "hot" at the right time: when Microsoft is trying to shove a slow, bloated, DRM-filled downgrade called Vista on its users.
So even if Ubuntu isn't ideal for all Linux users, it has the opportunity to greatly increase the Linux user population, bringing more and wider-ranged development to the OS, which will benefit us all regardless of our distro of choice.
Why exactly should I have been modded flamebait? I didn't say "wake me when there's a K/M... and all you people that like controller input are douchebags." All it meant was that I personally am not interested in console FPS until they offer a K/M option. It's the first response to my post that copped a flamebait attitude, and of course in typical Slashdot fashion got +5'd.
One day you just knew how to program? The full knowledge of programming fundamentals and the particular language syntax just sprang into your brain? You did this entirely without years of support from a society that, in addition to simply providing a safe environment, produced decades of practical and theoretical computer knowledge that teaches us how both how to solve particular known problems and approach unknown ones?
You're so right. I hate all these scummy programs that mangle a site's content. Like that evil program Mozilla, taking someone's beautiful, solid stream of HTML codes and unlawfully maniuplating it into tables, replacing img tags with images, changing colors, etc. It's criminal. Somebody sue under the DMCA or something, it's completely destroying what the purpose of the internet is!
OK, back to reality. These programs aren't manipulating the content on an internet site. Their hosted data is staying the same. How you chose to render that published data is up to you. It might include text-based browsing, graphically enabled browsing, just displaying key areas (maybe from a search result), or, yes, removing ads.
I assume the natural upgrade after market saturation for the audio player would be to a full media player (video support). They could also require upgrades for supporting new audio formats (which I'm sure would be marketed with upgrades in HD size so they don't look like complete assholes). They could also make the iPod a more general purpose computing device and start selling software for it like it's a PDA (OSX CE?).
It's bad enough that the paid editors can't be bothered to actually edit their site. It's also bad enough that the paid editors almost never produce the content -- it's all reader-submitted links to someone else's story. But now they want their readers to dig up the facts, write the story, and then give the content to Slashdot, providing the editors with more ad-hit revenue?
Never have I been happier that I blocked all the Slashdot/OSDN ad servers years ago.
If they downloaded it from the accused, that proves that the accused was illegally distributing copyrighted works. Just because the RIAA owns the material doesn't mean the accused was authorized to distribute it.
Exactly. But a lot of manufacturers are only combining the TabletPC technology with low-power (long battery life) laptops.
I have a Dell Inspiron 8200. I don't care that it's a big mofo, I like that I have a portable computer that can do everything my desktop can, and can do it almost as fast.
I'd love to see TabletPC technology integrated into Dell's top-of-line "desktop replacement" laptops, because just I use my laptop for note-taking during class as I do gaming during class. The keyboard is great for entering normal text, but CS involves a lot of formulas and symbols. The pen interface is so much more appropriate for that kind of use.
Since I was willing to put my gaming WAY ahead of my studying, I got REALLY good at QuakeII, Tribes, Tribes 2, and recently UT2003. I was CONSTANTLY accused of cheating in Q2 and T1. But more than that, I never had a problem getting first place even when other people were using the most blatant aimbots.
Also, I've never had problems finding public servers with no cheaters. Maybe I just never noticed them, but I don't think cheating is the massive plague that makes public multiplayer games impossible to enjoy. 75% of the "problem" is probably just people whining when they get killed.
But really officer, I wasn't pirating anything. I mean, if someone put a song up to be shared, they obviously hold the copyright, or are authorized to distribute the file.
Glad that you can say the games haven't changed when you haven't played them. Also glad that a company should be vilified for stopping rampant piracy. And especially glad that Slashdot will always be the refuse of self-righteous whiners like Hilleh.
I'll do that right after I donate $100 to some convicted rapist because, gee, prison must suck! Poor guy! I mean, it's not like he had the choice to NOT rape people.

Wake me when a console FPS game ships with a mouse and keyboard.
Stephen Galton is a shyster asshole son-of-a-bitch, and I willing to sit here for 10 more seconds to post that short of a message.

Fortunarely for the tyrannists, military training in part equates to brainwashing.

Sorry dude, my mod points expired yesterday. Otherwise I'd try to fix the unfair modding by the randite zealots.
Oh well, at least there's metamoderation.

I'm guessing you don't live in South Florida.
There were no trees before the industrial revolution.

Yeah, well the jerk store called and they want you back.
As it states quite clearly, the ADDRESS ITSELF is four times larger, not the number of distinct IP addresses yielded by the increase in address size.
I love it when Slashbots make fools of themselves trying to slander Microsoft.

How did this get to +4?

Damn. Straight.

YEAH! GO BUCS!!!
Best. Birthday present. EVER!
Of course, running will trigger the bear's hunter/prey instincts. Let that one guy take off, the bear will almost certainly go after him.
