    With the latest version of Java (u18), the browser freeze has been eliminated (as well as a vm crash taking out your whole browser).

    Snoracle have put a ton of effort into making Java plugins more usable.... finally.

    Unfortunately, the faster the processors get, fancier rendering features become possible in the offline space as well.

    Realtime rendering will never be on par with offline rendering of the same vintage.

    That's historically been the case. However, the java plugin has recently been rewritten and the newer version is much faster and eliminates browser crashes (the applet executes in a separate process).

    It's just a shame that Sun (now Oracle) hasn't open sourced the plugin, even though they said they would.
