    I play ScryMUD but the players are all assholes, and the MUD is kinda dying. At least I met some good friends while it was popular.

    Hey, the book was pretty good, I've not had the diestict displeasure of watching the movie though. Of course, making a move the match for a 900ish page book would be rather hard. Especialy when you try to make it through scientoligist colored glasses.

    Ehh, why are all my programs called a.out after I compile them? I don't get a cutsie .com for command, or .exe for executable.

    then you obviously don't write shell scripts. or save individual files off the internet. Tar can set permisisons, as can install, the program that actualy copies the files when you run make install. Files are not executable by default. something has to make them that way. you may be being confused though because cp often perserves permissions. try running vi myfile.sh and type up a shell script. it won't run unless you chmod it.

    except that in linux a file name is neither needed nor is it suffecient to make a file executable. you need to set the permissions on it. by default all windows files are executable. by default all linux files are not executable.

    Um, now I'm sure I'm going to get shouted down for this, but Guinea pigs aren't rodents, they are cavies, and closely related to Pachyderms, like Hippos and Elephants, in fact they are more closely related to horses than to mice.

    Just goes to show the difference between the Unix/Linux philosophy and the Windows Philosophy, Windows wants to make everythging easy, and so does Unix, however it's a matter of WHO it's easy for. Unix is easy for programers and admins, Windows is allgedly easy for new computer users. I'd realy like to see a study with total newbies in front of computers though. I think Gnome or KDE would preform favorably to windows if you get total newbies and allow them to ask questions to the test administrator. (because you know nobody ever does the tasks in the windows usabilty tests without help the first time)

    What do you mean his time and transmission? it takes none of his time, he puts the items in a cron job, and doesn't wory about it. probably goes home and has a beer knowing that as soon as a patch is out, within 24 hours he'll have it. I do the same thing on my computer using Red Carpet from Ximian.

    No, it's about registering the MAC address to get an IP address with MIT. the KaZaA registration is a totaly different issue. It was the owner of the IP address that was subpeonaed, and he was out of the country.

    Last I checked that's perfectly legal, if she'd distributed songs then the RIAA MAY have a case, as it is, not realy. I feel sorry that her mom is going to have to pay for the legal fees to defend her.

    well, the bad thing about black widows is that many people become alergic to the anti-venom, so you get bit once, go to the Dr. get a shot (you have time, but you need the shot, it's a hemotoxin) get bit a second time, you can suffer from the vemon, AND then they inject you with antivenon, and the alergic reaction makes you die faster.

    Yeah, Mass Market American beer sucks. we make good whiskey though. You should try some. Not as disctive as Scotch, but with subtlety and charecter all it's own. We also have some good wines, in fact several California sparkling whites are conisidered to be better than champane, and here without the pricetag. *knows he's going to catch flame from frogs now*

    Um, actualy black widows DO produce the best silk, and the military has a few of them in jars for specialised uses, they are just not usable in LARGE scale. They are very carefull about their silk spiders though.

    Ahh, ok. You've got to set up ICS on the Win 98 machine, so that it'll masq the linux machine. I know they are the same physical machine, but it thelps thinking of them as seperate, because they are virtual computers. The Linux Box needs to route through the windows box, needs to route through the router. even though the linux box is imaginary. if you were to install linux in a dual boot config it'd work right when you boot into linux, but virtual computers can make life a little harder.

    It's tweaking from withing Mandrake, for some reason the D-Link router isn't telling your computer that it's how to access the internet when you get your DHCP lease. if you're using static IP addresses then you didn't specify it. I'm not sure about the whole situation if you have it on a virtual host though. There may be more to it if you're using a virtual interface.

    try setting the router as your default route, some routers don't always do that through dhcp

    Corralary: I used to work a low paying facotry job. Yeah, we realy do have those in the US. The company I worked for EXPORTED goods to Mexico, these were commodity goods, in fact my job was stacking boxes of generic macaroni and cheese. American Labor wasn't the main reason for this, many of the workers were Mexican citizens. The advantages we had were management and organisational. We could deal with volume better, we could deal with distrobution better, our machinery could help people work faster. When management realises that TCO is going up, and ROI is going down, they'll bring jobs back to the US. The US still has a higer productivity rate than most other countries.

    People die at work all the time, Thousands upon Thousands died in exploring earth, we've gotten off damned cheap for loss of life in space. Not to be calous or anything, but we should suck shit like this up, and keep going, we shouldn't even PAUSE in our exploration, we should look at what's going on, we should try and make things safe, but we shoudn't disgrace what these people died for by stoping.

    Even if people go to the same resturaunt over and over again, not all people choose the same resturaunt. I'm not saying force people to leave their comfort zone, I'm saying allow them to find it. I don't know about where you are, but here in the midwest Trico (formerly Pepsico, before Pepsi spun it off) has reasturaunts that contain Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, A family can go there, and everyone have what they want, each going to their own favorite reasturaunt.

    People do not work well when they dislike their environment, I'm not saying this from the grounds of an expert, because Lord knows I'm not one, I'm saying this from the grounds of my experiance, As a programer, as a facotry worker, as a phone monkey, as an admin, and as a hobbyist. I made a comment elsewhere in here about unwashed masses, however when I was working in a facotry (after having run out of money to complete my degreee) I found that the LESS educated people are far more clever and adaptable than the dubmasses I programed for when I was an MIS intern. Consistancy is important, however the beauty of Linux/Unix is that individuals have consistancy, however still customise their interface, the beauty of *ix is that EACH user can have an interface that suits them without interfering with other users.

    What planet are you on? Redhat Has a wonderfull tool called kickstart. LSTP makes it where you don't even need to install it on each workstation, the apps live on the app server and the client runs just an X server. If you're in an environment where you want to have identical installs on hard drives you just copy the entire hard drive. Also it's very hard to have an entirely automated install when you have 5 CDs worth of stuff to be installed. There are distros that have minimal installation, like Knoppix that has none.
