The really trouble isn't technology it is level of comfort. Computers can go tits up for reasons that you don't readily understand or comprehend. When a physical book is destroyed there are indicators or a clear reason for it to occur. This makes people feel they have more control and perceived safety in storing the books in hard copy.

The company I work for uses the same system. I think it has been around for years. WOW uses it now if you want the service. The concept is that the server and the card use the same algorithm to create the password which is time and parameter dependent. It changes every 30 seconds so a hacker can't brute force the password from the server.

What I think is neat is that they have managed to put the magnetizing mechanism in the card now. Imagine placing your credit card on the degausser at the market and instead of having to get a new card you just push a button and the card works again. No more getting a new one. Plus all the other possible things mentioned in the article.

The kicker is that the essay for the class worth 40% was required to be referenced using journal articles found on your own time and the last day of class after reading the whole thing she mentions that the 40% exam will be based on class material only. Fortunately, I had not filled out the course evaluation yet. I heard latter on that some people went and talked to the department head about her, as well. It is definitely a problem that still exists.

I think the RIAA have been getting too comfortable with their position and are going to get a rude awakening when the people they are trying to abuse have the legal and political means to fight back. What the RIAA should do is what Google did and team up with a manufacturer to build a device to their specs.

I agree it is sad when people feel they have the right to pirate all games. It is like the flowers that are sold along the country roads where I live. I can buy gladiolas at about 6 for a dollar compared to a dollar each at the local store. The road side ones work on the honour system for paying and I pay every time because I would like to ensure that I don't have to buy them from the store. I have a feeling that piracy would decrease in the same way if the DRM free games passed the savings of not using DRM onto the consumer. I don't think taxation or government intervention would help though.

Economics is the concept that capitalism can efficiently allocate scarce resources without outside intervention. Video games are not a scarce resource. In the end they do cost money, but you are never going to be able to control who has access to viewing them. There is no way to quantify the cost per viewer. I hate it though when the publishers are all complaining about not making enough money. They are not entitled to make money. It is not a requirement that the company be successful. The company should live and die by their business model. I should not have to accommodate them or support them through taxes (Before you ask: CD taxes in Canada).
