  1. Don't need just knowledge on Kids Score 40 Percent Higher When They Get Paid For Grades · · Score: 1

Once you are working most jobs look at previous experience and how well rounded of an individual you are. A 4.0 gpa doesn't help when you are leading a group and those are the jobs that pay really well.

  3. Re:What used games market? on Publishers Want a Slice of Used Game Market · · Score: 1

The reason that they can't resell a significant number of them is the DRM that the publishers put on the pc games. But that is no big surprise. Maybe the console market will develop some form of DRM that will kill this secondary market as well. The publishers need to find other sources of income like advertisements in the game or merchandising.

  4. Barter on Buying a Domain From a Cybersquatter · · Score: 3, Insightful

The cybersquatter doesn't want the domain. He wants your money. Contact him and ask how much the site is going to cost. Don't be surprised if it is ridiculous then send an email back telling him your not interested at anything close to that price. I wouldn't be surprised if that price decreases rapidly to something quite more realistic. The guy is looking to make money and as long as its above cost he would be willing to sell. I don't get why people don't barter here as much as they do in Europe. Its a good skill to have.

You think its simple to just charge for using the laptop, but you setup a business-customer relationship with the person. I wouldn't want to do that to my friends. The other problem would be moral obligations if the laptop broke could ruin a friendship. I just carry around a piece of junk IBM with ubuntu on it and don't care what happens to it. That way whatever happens to it wouldn't ruin a friendship. Plus, if I want to do anything really fancy/private with it I just remote into my expensive desktop which no one else would have access to.

  6. Mistakes on An Argument For Leaving DNS Control In US Hands · · Score: 1

I don't think Canada has a blacklist for internet sites. Or nobody has written a news article about it. Plus I thought your request was passed from dns server to dns server until one found what you needed and the data moved back up the chain. I don't think it is possible to censor the dns system. People would just point themselves to a different dns server.

  7. Procedure Design on Students, the Other Unprotected Lab Animals · · Score: 4, Insightful

Most companies experience an accident and put in place procedures to handle the danger. Most procedures performed in academic labs are designed by the student for that one time. There is some common sense, but things can more easily go wrong if the procedure hasn't had the same rigor as an industrial procedure applied to it.

  8. Overlords on The City of Heroes Expansion & the Issues of User-Created Content · · Score: 1

The problem with user created content is it doesn't force the people to work within the designed system to do the best they can. There is no incentive to challenge the laws around the game when you can change them.

  10. Need for Speed on Australia, UK To Test Vehicle Speed-Limiting Devices · · Score: 1

My first reaction to this was the disgust at how intrusive this system is. I now realize it is a well thought out and considerate system. My problem is that I don't think the system takes into consideration, same as posted limits, the multitude of driving conditions that can occur. If its white out on the highway driving the speed limit is going to get you killed. A clear day with no other cars around you could go 20 over without a worry. In front of a school I would drive slow during school hours. At 1 in the morning, you don't have to watch out for kids. These systems ignore the basic need to teach drivers how to drive safely considering the surrounding conditions.

  11. What about Apple on Microsoft Patents the Crippling of Operating Systems · · Score: 1

Apple does more interesting pricing schemes then Windows. Apps for you iphone cost money and Apple gets a percentage. You are basically forced unless you want to jailbreak to buy those apps. Who says they don't reject the lower priced apps in preference to the higher priced apps. Companies are in the business of making money not ensuring that the product they push out is their greatest. This leads me to my hatred of patents. People are only going to get the greatest benefit if there is a competitive market.

I greatly hope that Mexican Government has approved of these actions. America seems to take their own rights so seriously that they treat the rest of the world as second class citizens. If America wants to be the land of the free they should extend their rights to people that aren't American.

No one has explained the process in entirety, but it should be running through the legal system. I hate people suggesting to give ISP their own legal authority because they aren't interested in following the letters of the law. If it is running through the legal system, it will get so bogged down under the workload that they will have to suspend many of those cases for a very long time.

I know that its legitimate in Russia to break copy protection to make a backup as allowed under their law. I don't think that is allowed in the states because it would be effectively attacking the DRM scheme. That makes it kinda silly then to have fair use and not allow people to use that right. Points to how poorly crafted the DMCA really is.

  19. Absudity on German Gov To Ban Paintballing After Shooting · · Score: 1

Yes it could be a attributing factor. More likely the kid was from a disfunctional family, had social issues, wasn't able to get the help to make sense of the world he was in and, oh ya most importantly, enjoyed competitive paintball and violent video games.
