Some constructions they make the construction company own the work for a year. A near by waste water treatment plant had a sand bed filter built for them recently and the contractor overfilled the beds. It took a couple months but the back washing gantry eventually jumped its tracks and sailed out of the building down the street. The construction company was on the hook for it. You wouldn't have been able to guess what would have happened from the overfill right after construction. Likewise you can't expect the construction company to replace the pumps, bearing and other components indefinitely as they fail.
Most trains use regenerative breaking to a bank of resistors. I think the emergency braking is on each car. They also spray sand on the wheels since they slip horribly during breaking. Its all pretty complicated. I think mark's point is valid since the stopping distance is limited to the wheels slipping, but most people brake lighter with the extra weight to avoid smoking the brakes. The shorter yellow is probably bad for the maintenance for the vehicles and will lead to brakes wearing out earlier.
They tend not to share all information with each other. They all have different goals and politics. It is one of the reasons explaining how 911 occurred while the NSA, FBI, and CIA were tracking the hijackers. I have no idea if it has gotten better since that time.
I am a Canadian and have seen Chris Hadfield at several presentation. He didn't market anything other than promoting people to pick up an interest in science. I think the high quality video/data transmission capability is something NASA is really proud of technically and they are trying to come up with reasons to show it off. And I agree its really sad that America has forgot how much research and technology NASA has spit out and how much more it could spit out.
The transfusions might be easier to bring to market since they are a well rehearsed procedure. It will probably occur at least until the pills can come to market. This could be the new lipitor. Especially in the countries where the person with the most money gets the best health care.
I felt like it looked like Star Trek. I think I even saw Nero. I hope they actually tell the story and don't trim away the complex parts to appeal to a broader audience.
Calling a balloon of hydrogen catching fire an explosion is an insult to an actual explosion(I realize its a technical explosion. I am calling to the fact its tiny.). In Canada the teachers do it themselves all the time to demonstrate the combustion reaction.I think punitive damages in the states has become asinine. Its like a lottery for the mildly aggrieved.
I use the trick every time I have a batch of homebrew with a funny taste. The reason macro brew tastes so bland is that they use a bunch of corn and rice instead of barley to save money.
I realize no one rtfa, but its not a mainframe. Its a freaking adding machine. There is no data migration. This is probably a couple hours tops of spreadsheet work. The best thing from them to do is implement the spreadsheet and compare. It would save a bunch in testing. That way when the sucker does have a aneurism they can just switch over with confidence and no need to perform testing or experience downtime.
Your example is so true though. I have seen several professors use the service to complete a simulation over the weekend when they are on a deadline. Its a tool. You use it when it makes sense. The migration away is from inept companies that didn't do a real business case for the procurement, but have woken up now to the real cost.
I remember booting DOOM from DOS and the actual windows application when I wanted to use the windows interface. I think that is what he was thinking. I suspect the OS was still running in the background?
I switch my laptop to linux now and again. The biggest trouble I find with it is the installing applications can become hacky and doesn't always work out. I suspect its because of my lack of knowledge regarding linux. I think you are right that computer illiterate people have an easier time with getting on linux. The basics on linux have become really solid. It like there is a parabola where illiterate and highly skilled people find linux usable.
And in the markets they can't I bet there is a lot of Game of Thrones merchandise(can't pirate that right now) which probably has good margins on it. The shows work as a vehicle to sell those products.
I vote with my wallet so I don't have to deal with a crap game. There is enough content out there you don't notice the difference really. You only get screwed on the games that the first one in the series was awesome (bioware:( ). You shouldn't care about what other people do.
The margin on the books are somewhere around 50% so Amazon would want to push the new book in your example, but that is more an issue of the numbers you are pulling together then the actual point. That is a valid point though that it would be seemless to buy the product used instead of new. I think it will become similar to large video games where you make a significant portion of the money on people buying it as early as they can when the used/pirated market does not exist.
It will be interesting to see what happens. I don't think killing used sales is the answer. Fortunately there is a large group of people entrenched against ebooks that will ensure paper book sales still matter. Probably the margins will have to be reworked between the distributor and publishers since the overhead for distributing ebooks is probably small.
At least some university campuses in Canada have a police detachment, but its more about not having the police come in for the small stuff that university students seem to like to get in trouble for(underage drinking). I doubt they would respond to major incidents.
I was arguing that without traffic laws the car would become horribly dangerous since no one would know what anyone else was doing on the road. The fact that people flout the law and drive dangerously and get people killed shows how people fail to respect the power cars afford. I was trying to argue that there are laws that could be created that would not affect most gun owners, since they want to be safe and already perform these actions, and would improve safety by promoting better behavior by irresponsible gun owners. The outlawing a specific make or model laws are stupid and won't do anything, but look good to the public. And this isn't about guns in crime since most gun related injuries/deaths come from unintentional discharges and accidents. Those issues are much more complex, but always seem to be trotted out when people start talking about making guns safe.
Cause that makes a load of sense. And there wouldn't be much of confusion. Everyone has radar up the ying yang. They would probably show footage of the trajectory and launch sites on the news by the next day. Also if you read the Russian news (and probably the Chinese too) you hear about how they are working to defend themselves from the crazy Americans. They don't want to attack the US unless they have to. China is more interested in regaining ownership of small countries around them. A significant amount of US military plans regarding China are for protecting those countries.
There are irresponsible individuals with loaded guns laying around their house without trigger locks. You can not use yourself as the example of what needs to be handled. Do not defend these people. They deserve to get imprisoned for having a firearm. There should be laws about how to safely store and handle a firearm. A firearm is dangerous and it deserves respect. We all understand that you need to respect cars as they are dangerous and there are laws that address this.
US has the largest military budget. The Chinese beat them in man power though. Arguably in a battle of attrition a lot of countries would have the US beat. Nuclear devices kill and destroy indiscriminately. They are not good at making objectives. They aren't really that useful except for posturing and negotiating in warfare.

I wish we had red-amber in North America. I think they are brilliant. Probably also makes comparing the US and UK pointless and misleading.
*braking. Missed the spelling error.

After reading this comment I think I get it now. Thanks for that, but man does my head hurt.

It is kind of a contrived situation, but its a decent system and there are probably more uses for it beyond this. Specifically with lab work.

I don't think they meant security from people or the other sheep, but predatory dogs. Kind of ironic that trying to protect her probably killed her.

And this is where I got the 50%
