  1. Ubuntu Sarge on Is Ubuntu a Compatibility Nightmare for Debian? · · Score: 5, Informative

    http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ubuntu/relationship/doc ument_view

"Ubuntu makes a release every six months, and supports those releases for 18 months with daily security fixes and patches to critical bugs.

As Ubuntu prepares for release, we "freeze" a snapshot of debian's development archive ('sid'). We start from 'sid' in order to give ourselves the freedom to make our own decisions with regard to release management, independent of Debian's release-in-preparation. This is necessary because our release criteria are very different from Debian's.

As a simple example, a package might be excluded from Debian 'testing' due to a build failure on any of the 11 architectures supported by Debian 'sarge', but it is still suitable for Ubuntu if it builds and works on only three of them. A package will also be prevented from entering Debian 'testing' if it has release-critical bugs according to Debian criteria, but a bug which is release-critical for Debian may not be as important for Ubuntu.

As a community, we choose places to diverge from Debian in ways that minimize the difference between Debian and Ubuntu. For example, we usually choose to update to the very latest version of Gnome rather than the older version in Debian, and we might do the same for key other pieces of infrastructure such as X or GCC. Those decisions are listed as Feature Goals for that release, and we work as a community to make sure that they are in place before the release happens."

So, who cares that it isn't compatible with Sarge? Is Sarge really compatible with Sid? I think not (if you are sane). Shouldn't Ian be saying that Ubuntu isn't compatible with his "componentized Linux" (http://www.progeny.com/products/components.html)?

Yes, you need a copy of the game to play on a BnetD server. Do you need a copy of the game that was purchased by you? Not at all. The BnetD server does not make ANY checks on the serial number that is supposed to validate the game as unique and legitimate. "The "piracy" crap"" is not a "red-herring" when you stop and actually THINK about the situation.

I had just set up a BnetD server for me and some co-workers, that did not make it in the Warcraft 3 beta, when VU sent the BnetD guys the cease and desist letter. I was using BnetD to play the game illegally. When the beta stopped working with the BnetD server I quit playing the game (I suck at RTS games any way). Did I buy a copy of Warcraft 3? No.

Seriously, why wouldn't you want to use Blizzard's servers if you bought the game? Possibly because some of your friends didn't and you still want to play with them? I think that is ever more likely than "allow people to play with each other across the Internet without Blizzard listening in." And hell, why wouldn't you want Blizzard "listening in"? You did buy the game right? What is the big deal?

That being said, World of Warcraft is an excellent game. I enjoy it greatly when I have the time to play.

I understand that the games cost money to develop. I also understand that a portion of the monthly fees goes toward maintaining the game and such. But, not all of it does; I will even venture to say that a majority of the monthly fee is nothing but pure profit. I am talking about the combined monthly fees they are getting from the 100,000+ subscribers. At some point the fees stop paying the bills and start lining the corporate wallets.

Sure, offer all the goodies in the box for the people that want them (most just throw everything except the cd, and cdkey, away) but, offer up the goods online (really for free) for the people willing to download the content and pay the fee.

You can go to the store, buy the box which comes with goodies like a map and a plastic disc, and get your "free month." Or, you can go to the website, download the installer, and then play for a free eight hours. What is so wrong with that that games like CoH can't do that? "Free month" indeed.

The following text is from http://telecom.hellodirect.com/docs/Tutorials/5.8G HzFrequency.1.031903.asp. It is a decent article, targeted towards consumers, that explains the difference between 900Mhz, 2.4Ghz, and 5.8Ghz phones and why the different bands exist.

    Output wattage

To keep neighbors from constantly hearing each other's conversations, the FCC initially limited the output wattage for cordless phones to just .001 watt. But when digital and spread spectrum technologies (SSTs) made eavesdropping a less valid concern by scrambling signals or dividing them across multiple bandwidths, the allowable wattage for cordless phones was increased to 1 watt. This action made for clearer calls and increased a cordless phone's range three- to fourfold. Meanwhile, the increased wattage covered up the fact that higher-frequency signals require more power to transmit.

When 5.8 GHz phones were introduced, the allowable wattage was not increased--and here is where the buyer must beware. Because transmitting signals at a higher frequency requires more power, some 5.8 GHz phones use the new frequency only for the base-to-handset transmission. Then, to make sure a handset's battery has a reasonable life, handset-to-base transmissions are sent on the older 2.4 GHz frequencies.

technobeast: Why is the latest stable version of Debian outdated? And why is this idea with several releases? Any purpose to announce outdated versions as stable and currently usable as unstable/testing?

Martin Michlmayr: Debian has traditionally had very slow release cycles. One reason for this is that Debian has often been used for servers. As it is being used increasingly for desktops, our release cycle is not adequate anymore. We know about this and are working on implementing faster release cycles which will meet the needs of server and desktop users. Another reason why Debian is often slow with release is that our system is very large. We have more than 10,000 packages and support 11 architectures. However, we are working on solutions which will allow faster release cycles. In this process, we are moving away from a feature based to a time based release. This will ensure predictable releases.

I assume that you realize the Dreamcast has still not been fully explored or exploited to its full potential and that everything that has been done for it thus far is the result of some very hard work by some very talented people (sorry for leaving out others - just making a point).

In short, don't insult a scene because you use it to play free games and expect them to run perfectly without any contribution. Emulation is about learning. It is not about getting things for free.

I bought this album ($9.99 and Best Buy) and decided to read the cover fully before I broke the seal on the package when I got it home. After reading some very fine print (someone's definition of "prominently" is very messed up) I learned that the disc uses the MediaMax "protection" system. I then did a quick search to determine if this would affect me as a Debian user. I learned that this "protection" system would only really affect Windows machines, and then if they only have auto-run enabled, so I opened the package and proceeded to rip it with Grip and encode to Ogg -q5. I also had no problems copying the disc with cdrdao for use in my car. I honestly don't see the problem here. If the anti-copy mechanism doesn't work there is no need to get in a huff about it. Just go on your merry way and let the record companies think this system is all that and a bag of chips. It doesn't affect anyone with half a brain.

As a side note, this album is really quite good. At first listen it is rather bland - not bad but not great. After listening to it some more, though, the music starts to shine and album shows how good these musicians really are.
