    He bought the linux version of quake3 or bought the windows version and downloaded the binaries or pirated the game and downloaded the linux binaries.

    From the xterm man page...

    The xterm program is a terminal emulator for the X Window System. It provides DEC VT102/VT220 (VTxxx) and Tektronix 4014 compatible terminals for programs that cannot use the window system directly.

    Clicking 'x' in the corner isn't a feature provided by the program, its provided by the window manager. You can do it in gvim (you even get a little pop up asking if you want to save your changes).

    I'm guessing the ZZ command is meant more for speed than for being intuitive :q (quit) and :wq (write and quit) make much more sense. Of course, if using gvim you can tell your window manager what keys you want to use for closing programs, or use the default.

    vi(m) lets you do things in more than one way, pick the one you like best and stick with it.

    These are the vi packages on available on my system:

    vi (3.7-r4): The original VI package
    bvi (1.3.1): display-oriented editor for binary files, based on the vi texteditor
    nvi (1.81.5-r1): Vi clone
    vim (6.2-r3): Vi IMproved!
    gvim (6.2-r3): Graphical Vim
    kvim (6.2.14): KDE editor based on vim
    vile (9.3h): VI Like Emacs -- yet another full-featured vi clone
    elvis (2.1.4-r1): A vi/ex clone
    xvile (9.3h): VI Like Emacs -- yet another full-featured vi clone
    viper (1.35): VI emulation support for Emacs.

    Vim wasn't installed by default, I could have installed any of the other packages if I wanted.

    How did you manage to find a system that doesn't need compilers? Do the programmers for your operating system do everything in hex editors?

    So instead of watching people frag each other over and over, you get to watch people camp over and over.

    There are team based fps' that require strategy (such as qwtf), most don't.

    It could be your kernel. I know my system slows down considerably under heavy hard drive use, which didn't happen under windows. If it isn't the kernel it could always be the drivers for your graphics card or the toolkit (I find kde/qt apps take much longer to load than gtk apps) or even the programming language (pyGTK programs are extremely slow for me).

    I used windows xp two days ago... it told me to reboot the system after detecting new hardware... again after i changed the computer name.

    Sure, its a lot more stable, but at least in my experience its still a lot more annoying to use than linux.

    It's cheaper than buying both a laptop and a desktop. You lose the easy upgrades but most people rarely upgrade their system, except for adding more memory.

    OTOH, this wouldn't be much use for me since i hate the way games/videos look on lcd screens... so I'd always keep a crt on my desk to do that stuff.

    Wouldn't you have at least an interest in how a steak is cooked or what part of the cow the steak comes from or how a farm looks? Not a bit of curiosity?

    If all people do is get specialized in a particular task and only have an interest in things from a utilitarian point of view life gets very boring, even depressing.

    I use linux because it doesn't make me fight the system to see what's going on with my computer when i do something. I have no problem with a simpler UI, but it has to be something the user chooses. Ignorance shouldn't be forced on everyone and it shouldn't be promoted either.

    Are you saying that you'll remember www.xouvert.org as easily as you remember www.yahoo.com in 6 months? I haven't used yahoo in months, but i haven't forgotton the name... because its a good name. So yes, the name matters. Not as much as some people pretend it does though.

    Ogg Vorbis btw, is a terrible name. I still can't tell which part stands for the codec and which is the file format. The effect of a bad name isn't devastating, but it doesn't do much good either.

    Python, Lisp, Scheme are as portable and sometimes more portable than java. You need a vm/sdk/jdk to run java, which is a giant waste of space imo.

    XMMS seems to work in a standard way to me... i've been able to enqueue songs by dragging them from a filemanager to the playlist window. It remembers its position whenever i start it again. It has a number of output plugins to work with different sound daemons/oss/alsa and input plugins to work with different file formats.

    I'm not sure which standards it needs to use that aren't there.

    I'd love to use a program that would fit in more with the other gtk2 programs... but i also need something that is as compact, easy to use, free from crashing and as customizable. My only alternative seems to be winamp2 ;o

    I liked the original pokemon, its the many clones that nintendo has been releasing that i don't like. I honestly believe the gba sells as well as it does because its the only portable out there.

    Once it gets some competition, nintendo will lose that market just like its been losing the console market since the n64. The PSP could be overpriced, too big, with too little memory life but Sony is generally successful with electronics (specially portable electronics).

    Their revenue stream will get in trouble if the PSP ends up being a nice system. Their lame ports of famicon/super famicon and pokemon clones won't help them then.

    I disagree with your idea that if the government uses its force to stop a monopoly there is no/less competition. The government should use its force in certain cases to make sure a market remains competitive.

    RedHat isn't abusing its monopoly status to stop people from buying other Operating Systems... mainly because they don't have a monopoly.

    You obviously don't know what competition is if you think the government should be allowed to use its force in order to stop a monopoly. I'm sure Adam Smith rolls in his grave every time a conservative american yells "capitalism!"

    The iPod doesn't work as a usb mass storage device which means i can't transfer files between computers as easily as with a usb flash drive/mp3 player.

    It's also overpriced like most (all?) apple products.

    That example you gave makes it sound like the reason is increased market share rather than goodwill. If a company does things other than for increased market share, increased profit or decreased costs you can tell there's a problem (like most internet companies a couple of years ago having the objective of increasing share price).
