  2. A nice thought.... on Fight Virus With Virus? · · Score: 1

This has some merit, as far as what it would intend to do - go out and fix stuff, making the world a more secure place. (here it comes...) But.... it opens up way too many cans of worms (no pun intended) as far as privacy issues and such. For example, I don't want some unknown worm of some sort poking at my web server. I want *me* poking at it, knowing what's going on with it, etc. If I go to run a patch, and suddenly it says "this patch has already been run" I wanna know why, and how, and who. Also, it comes down to the fact that sysadmins can't be lazy. I've seen so many, many "tech ppl" who think they have a clue, think that all they need to do is install a few things, and they're gods. They forget the second half.. the *work* part of their job.. where they have to go out, get patches, keep up to date, be PRO-active to problems and potential problems. My thought on that is, maybe if a few systems get infected, it might wake up some of these techs and get them to motivate their collective butts to get themselves patched. If they don't, it's nobody's fault but theirs.. the patches have been out for months.

This is a can o worms....

  7. What about hardware failure? on Whistler "Anti-Piracy" Tools Tie OS To Machine · · Score: 1

Picture this: You purchase Whistler and put it on your PC. It mostly works. You're happy, Bill is happy. Then, your motherboard or other hardware part dies in a horrible plane crash. You buy a new computer, and, since you already own a legit copy of Whistler and don't want to purchase a second license of the same item, you decide to put Whistler on the new PC. Perfectly legal, since it's your copy, and you only have it running on one PC. Will it allow this? Say I want to swap out my motherboard, or put in a new 95 gig hard drive in, in place of my extremely tiny 30 gig.. can I do this? It seems that as long as you don't change a thing - it'll work.. bad news for people like me who like to bulid and upgrade their own home PCs.

I had the same result with a similar technique. I local ISP that I was a member of had *extremely* poor service that went from bad to worse. I even went so far as to conference call with the head of the ISP with a group of users, so we could explain our complaints. Everyone behaved very maturely and the head of the ISP promised changes in very short order. 3 months later - same issues. I started sending followup emails and ccing to various television stations. Amazingly, things started to happen. Never underestimate the power of the media. It's a bit like a sci-fi movie though.. the power can be used for good.. and it can be used for evil.

  9. What a company I used to work for did - on What Is A Fair Privacy Policy? · · Score: 1

I used to work in the corporate offices of a major retail company in the Midwest. The policy we enacted, which really seemed quite fair, was that all employees signed a paper which stated that the powers that be *do* have the security to look at email, but will not do so without a just cause, such as a serious complaint or court order. Email would not just be looked at to spy on the end user, or to do a witch hunt, per se. That was all fine and good for email and really worked out well. This was the same company, however, that sent logs of everyones web browsing hits to auditing for review, and looked at *everyone's* logs, whining when someone went over some pre-concieved limit on browsing (always nailed me because I was the most web fluent in my department, always being asked to find some kind of info, and because when I browse, I always open multiple windows).

  12. it's a matter of the consumer... on Where are the "Internet" Appliances with Ethernet Cards? · · Score: 1

The reason that these types of devices are still standardizing on a 56K modem, rather than ethernet is because of the target audience of these devices. Everyone (well.. most everyone) has a phone line - but not everyone has ethernet at home. So you make a device for the masses and give it the ability to be used on a phone line.

What I'd like to see is the wiring of a home get cheap enough for the average person to afford, or as was mentioned before, some kind of either wireless or other type of standard, to make these devices work nicely, but not tie up a phone line. There was talk over the last couple of years that the local bells want to get a dedicated line to each address in the US, for high speed access for the common man. I've not yet seen it done on a mass-standard scale, just those that ask for it (cable modem or DSL). I do think that with the advent of both cable modems and dsl that we're going to get to the point where everyone will at least have non-async access to the internet.. but we're not quite there yet. Cable access was only available to where I live this past month, and I live right outside a semi-major city (Green Bay, WI)

Alternatively, I'd like to at least see these new devices have the option when you buy them, to offer ethernet or async, and for very little price difference. That way the average user who has no plans to wire their house up will be able to use the device if he/she wishes, and for those of us who tend to leave networked houses in our wake (I'll be wiring the duplex that I live in with Cat6 shortly), will have the ability to use them at our convenience as well.

Way back when this palm gig started, we heard a few things in the trade rags, and saw them start to become available on order. We decided as an EUS department to hold off until things settled in and we saw where the technology went (why buy the first one off the line, when it *might* not be that good..perish the thought :-) As we kept an eye on things, the end user community caught wind of them, bought into the hype, then bought into about a dozen of the little buggers (Palm IIIs). Then once they arrived, they called up asking for support (I believe the phrase I got from one user was "make it work!").

In the right hands, it can be a useful device. My boss temporarily couldn't live without one. We've since ceased ordering (by way of amputation of the purchase order process at the knees) and are *now* evaluating the devices. From my eval of the items, I saw they had a few ok applications, were very finicky as to syncing up with email (we run GroupWise, which Palm's *really* don't like), and the Palm Desktop software wasn't the most stable in the world. Right now, we don't support *any* devices for the end users until we decided what is ok for our environment.. much to the wincing and grumbling of several vice presidents downstairs.

Personally, I see it as a game machine, and electronic planner. The interface just isn't that good for any higher end applications that are being developed, such as a word processor, or spreadsheet. Even email seems to really not be it's thing. If it just had a notepad, calculator, and calendar/planner, it'd be complete (IMHO).. which amazingly we had in Windoze 3.x.

I used the pre-programmed settings for WI, and noted that in about 3 or 4 areas of the city, I intercept cellular calls in the 400MHz range. For me, it's an annoyance - I really didn't care to hear that the dog did a mess on the rug while the owner was away from the house. However.. it was too easy to set up a scanner to do this - I didn't have to do a thing! Kinda scary.. and one of the reasons that I *don't* have a cellular phone.
