  1. Re:How is this illegal? on SBC Hit with Antitrust Lawsuit · · Score: 1

Nothing personal, but you are an idiot. "competition come along and buy the lines off them cheap" ?? One cannot buy the phone companies lines. You can LEASE 'em for a sizable amount though... We are a small ISP in a semi-rural area and brought Wifi fixed access to it before the phone company brought in DSL. When they finally did a year ago, we evaluated getting into the DSL resale business; we would have had to buy a $20,000 DSLAM along with paying SBC ~$35 per month per customer. With a limited customer base here, how would we make money like that? We would have had to charge customers $60 each to make like $5 per customer per month.

You may want to check your foolish preconceived ideas at the door, OK.... thanks.

My view on the ACLU is that they sometimes go on quixotic tangents on lesser-priority issues which tend to dilute their support, but if not the ACLU, who else? You need money to get your voice heard today. /rant/

We are a small independent ISP in a semi-rural Southern California town and we have several customers running via 802.11b at DSL speeds. Check out our very minimalist web page at www.ojaiwireless.com for ideas as far as price, etc.

Our latest challenge has been finding ways to deal with the "hidden transmitter issue" which can cause serious packet loss. This stuff DOES work though, quite nicely if you you know what you are doing.

Also, most newer firmware\drivers bypass the known insecure part of the WEP. This means that the standard wireless sniffing techniques will not work easily. I must note however, with others, that a determined attacker is gonna get through whatever the transport. Firewalls and VPNs would be required for any kind of sensitive data.

Probably not. Politics is not about "working for the people" or any such nonsense. It's about keeping your job by appealing to the majority in the least odious way. People hate evil hackers, flag desecrators, pedophiles, homos, or whatever fringe group that can be easily demonized, so it is often a no-lose situation to vote to legislate against these "abnormals."

I don't see this situation changing soon, no matter who controls the senate or the house; nor when _insert your political group dogma here_ gets in power. And people wonder why I am a cynic....

Yes, this is probably one of the least mentioned reasons that the Imperial Japanese actually did surrender; fear of the Russian invasion. Many generals would have fought to the death, even after the bombs, but they feared being totally conquered by the Soviets. AFAIK there was only one large battle between the Japanese and the Soviets, (in China?) and the Japanese overwhelmingly lost. After that they were very intimidated and preferred the Americans as enemies.

If Germany and Japan had truly committed to conquering the Soviet Union, who knows how the world would be now? Would all of Asia and Europe be one big Axis empire?
