    Think of something like YAST (before it was GPLed) or nVidia's binary drivers. Both offer their own "improvements" to existing GPL software.
    nVidia's binary drivers are really not comparable to the question at hand. The nVidia binary drivers are - as the name implies - binary only. Which is only possible because they are not based on any GPL code. That is they are plugins into existing GPL source (the kernel). That's not very different from the Microsoft closed source world - you can make binary drivers for Windows too.

    Actually Richard Curnow made a kind of virtual folders for traditional unix mailbox formats. It's called mairix. The downside is you have to run it to update your virtual folders. The upside (of course) is you can get virtual folders in mutt :-)

    PHP has a CLI interpreter. You can run it just like you run perl or whatever.

    I haven't RTFA, but why should that stop me from posting ;-)

    Anyways, I've considered this myself before and from my perspective it might be a bad thing. Argument: Most interesting channels have a very limited audience. As such my guess is that they can only survive by "piggy-backing" on the large popular soap-opera/reality-show/talk-show kind of channels.

    This is actually the way it was in ancient Greece. The people decided who was to be governor of the so called city-state. No one was allowed to run, the people just elected one from the crowd IIRC.

    Core J2EE Patterns is another book on the subject. You can even find many (all?) of the patterns from the book online.

    I've found a lot of these patterns to be useful in other domains (PHP webapps) as well.

    There's no concept of distributions in the FreeBSD world. MacOSX is based on FreeBSD, it's a fork not a distribution.

    More or less yes. The major difference is that with a honeypot you make sure that there's only a way in -- you make it impossible for the offender to use the honeypot to carry on attacks from the honeypot. And that does not seem to be the case in this example.

    On the web, sites are required by law to warn users before they can enter an adult site.

    In Soviet Russia, and most other places in the world American law isn't in effect. At least not until somebody yells terrorist and Bush sends in the cavalry.

    Does anyone in the know have any inklings that it might be like BSD ports?

    I'm no BSD ports expert, but from what I hear the Gentoo team is porting their Portage system, which is heavily inspired by the BSD ports system, to other platforms (OS X).

    Portage does support the things you mention, system-wide upgrades and tracking installed packages.

    This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

    The courts in the US, unfortunately, have the same view. If it's corporation versus non-corporation, the corporation will always get the benefit of the doubt. The burden of proof will always be on the non-corporation...[snip]

    I believe both SCO and IBM would be categorized as corporations by the court. Not quite sure what non-corps you suggest could be sued?

    While I may agree with most of your post one thing did need a response:

    This is actually not quite fair. If you emerge your ebuilds with "nice -n 19 emerge [ebuild]" you really won't notice it's building.

    It is not easier to decrypt a good encryption even if you know every little detail of the encryption algorithm. Actually the consensus in the cryptography community is that if an algorithm is not published openly for everybody to poke at it cannot be trusted.

    Just think how many different DSA/SSL/etc. implementations there are out there and several of these in opensource.

    This just doesn't help much if one has one's email forwarded. I'm having several accounts {A, B, C} from various places and they all get forwarded to the same address D. So when I reply it'll be from D.

    Perhaps he would like to stimulate his brain a bit?

    I am currently employed while going to university. Through the summer I only work and at the end of the summer my brain is hungering for knowledge and intellectual stimulation. That's why I study in the first place -- career prospects are second to me.

    Working seems to be somewhat trivial and repetitive while studying seems to bring daily challenges for the mind.
