... and how common they are. It has to do with the common belief that for an ocean to be hospitable, it needs to be within a certain threshold. They've basically taken evidence that microbes thrive in near boiling water and near frozen water, and apply that to the other suspected oceanic environments in the solar system. This says nothing about the environment required to form life however. Overall, nothing new here....

    I completely agree...

The ONLY benefit of doing a pluto mission is that its the furthest "planet" from the Earth (at certain points in its orbit).

We need to concentrate on either the Moon or Mars, possibly the moons of Jupiter to establish truely beneficial exploration.

Pluto, in my opinnion, at this point in time is a worthless rock. NASA should spend their money on more beneficial studies.

When it comes to it, an employer can fire you for *NO* reason at all. Its not your right to work for an employer, its a privilege. If they don't like you looking at porn on their time, they can fire you, regardless of whether its "in the handbook" or not. They don't need to give you a reason. Sure sue all you want, but there are plenty of excuses to fire someone and have plenty of blanket protection in court.

What people fail to acknowledge here is the time scale that another civilization may be at when trying to signal us. They may very well have the capability to resolve Earth from a distance of light years by building an extremely large telescope.

I see the lack of communication passing through our galaxy as evidence that we simply haven't figured out THE practical medium for communication. Maybe laser pulses for a billionth of a second are exactly how civilizations are communicating. The chances of there not being intelligent life elsewhere in the galaxy are just too small. If we determine this, then I'm going back to church.

You're wrong. Not only can you not USE the code directly (copy-paste it into your app), but you also cannot even DYNAMICLY LINK your proprietary code with GPL'd code. In other words, I cannot load a GPL'd library unless all of my code is GPL'd. Thats lame.

There's much more to useful software then QT, GNOME or some other GUI related apps.

As for your second statement, I see no logic or reasoning behind it. My point was that the GPL limits its usage which in turn limits its effectiveness. It will forever be used only in free software because no company is going to open source their product just so they can use a library (recap, no I'm not talking about OS related libs or gnome, qt, etc, I'm talking about a useful library like a RegExp engine).

  24. Re:What bugs me about GPL on Microsoft Plans "Shared Source" .NET · · Score: 1

I said nothing about GNOME. If Bill Gates was talking about the GPL, then he was talking about the GPL; not the LGPL.

The GPL is a plague for free and proprietary software that limits its usage. It will forever be used for non-commercial, non-proprietary uses, except when marketed to the free software community.

  25. Re:What bugs me about GPL on Microsoft Plans "Shared Source" .NET · · Score: 1

Thats assuming I want to use a component of the OS. If they didn't have that "special exception" then you couldn't run ANY proprietary software under an OS like Linux.

My problem here is that I may want to use a Regular Expressions engine in say a Java program, but the engine is GPL. Now I can't use the GPL'd code because my shit is proprietary. How does this benefit GPL? I say it doesn't. It prevents people from using it, thus limiting its exposure. If a corporation is going to open source their software or a specific product, they'll do it regardless of whether or not the GPL exists. The GPL doesn't persuade anyone into using it or its software. It only limits its usage.
