Not likely. Blocking out websites by domain/ip is much simpler than actually scanning incoming packets for viruses. Any trained monkey can designate a website to block. However identifying a unique signature of a virus and applying that to all of China's gateways before it infects a fair # of boxes requires far more money and man power than they'd ever care to pay. Besides, lots of computer viruses written today are FROM China.
I myself would pay for limited wireless access from my house, and have of Back Bay in Boston would do the same. Lots of the buildings are so antiquated that you can't have DSL OR Cable... Hand out fliers and charge them $20/mo... I think people would sign on if you could cover a large enough area cheaply.
In all honesty, I felt the same way until today. I'm sick of turning on the TV and watching those f'ing towers drop. It fills me with anxiety and panic like the day it happenned. It took me months to sleep soundly again. Unfortunately not everyone was impacted like us in the NYC area. It might be overkill now, but I want everyone who wasn't here to know precisely what it was like and how it felt. The govt says we are at war but what exactly has been done? We obliterated sections of Afghanistan because of Al Qaeda and as a result we get criticism from everyone in the world. We're planning on attacking Iraq, a known sponsor of terrorism who explicitly attempted to blow up the WTC and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels. We get criticised for that. We give billions in aid to countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and everyone in Europe yet everyone still HATES America and everything we stand for. The world is staged right now precisely the way Europe was prior to World War I and World War II. The difference is that apparently this time around England and the US are willing to react to the hostility. I want every French commie and every liberal vegan to understand that by sitting on your ass now and "giving peace a chance" may one day have you jumping out of a building to kill yourself because you can't bear to be burned to death like the countless desperate people in Manhatten on that day. Prior to 9/11 we were all willing to be tollerant and we still should be, however tollerance should not protect beligerance.
Open Source Software isn't profitable. Its charitable however... so donate, donate, donate your time money and effort to your favorite potential cheap employer!!!
Yes, very cool technology. The description however drove me nuts.
"My arms are under his, trying to steady the weight. His head snaps toward mine, and I take it on the chin with the force of a solid right cross."
Do we care about this? Can't he just say "occasionally, he has convulsions", rather than ranting on for multiple paragraphs about this mysterious device like its a sci-fi book.
Very true. Unfortunately though, even some PhD's fail to actually utilize the scientific method when conducting their research. Its all about where they'll get their next round of grants from...
Sure, we're friends with Europe. Don't expect me to believe for a second that the EU is a reliable ally that will bail us out in times of need though. Also don't expect me to have faith in your system, especially after 2 world wars and an enormous amount of civil unrest over the last century. The only country in the EU that I personally have any faith is in GB...
Unless: - Your 6 Month deadline is flexible to ~ 9 months (b/c it'll take a loooooooooong time to get in sync) - You know of specific competent people there that you know you can rely on (b/c mostlikely you cannot) - You have specific requirements spelled out precisely how you want it implemented - You do not need to worry about performance and memory (b/c mostlikely you'll take a hit there) - You can't just hire another American employee and try to sweat it out... (b/c otherwise you're obviously working against the common good of the programmers in this country) - You can deal with severe communication barriers. Lets face it, I know of PLENTY of H-1's that have lied about having a college degree to get a job here. Its obvious when they don't: they can't speak or write english well! You're mostlikely going to hit this problem! - There's nothing preventing these people in India from blackmailing you for more money by not providing what they promised (its happenned to us!).
Yes, this is further complicated by the fact that these comets are close to the extrema of their orbits. This is where you'll get the highest error since slight changes in its path (or error computing its path due to pixelation, etc) can have an enormous effect on where it may end up on the flip side.
Microsoft's claim is completely ungrounded - nothing written by a third-party can take away Microsoft's intellectual property rights. But it makes a good (read: confusing to the general public) justification for preventing others from interoperating with their software.
Why shouldn't microsoft explicitly prohibit GPL'd code from linking to their libraries if the GPL explicitly prohibits proprietary close software from doing the same thing! Thats a bit hypocrytical to complain about this...
Wrong. Sun makes money from selling hardware. AOL makes money from selling a service, i.e. Internet access and content.
Ximian may want to make money, and they actually might. Unfortunately it will all be via peeps like you who want to give them hand-me-outs which is hardly enough to maintain a business, let alone a realistic economical model. Ximian is a VC money pit. Sure they may make cool and very useful stuff. If its released under the GPL (which I don't even know for sure if it is), they simply will not succeed.
The statement wasn't about GPL and end-user apps. It was about GPL and end-user apps that can actually MAKE money.
"Supported by SUN" and "Will charge" are not success stories. A company cannot make a profit and at the same time release its software under the GPL. They don't mix. You won't make money. Even if you're lucky to make a significant buck with the first version, you won't make it very far after that before someone takes your source and sells it in the same market.
I agree. Object Oriented is simply a means of organization. If you choose to handle everything linearly, then go the route of C/FORTRAN etc. If you wish to handle the calculations from multiple perspectives, you'll need good organization, which OO provides you with. OO is nice for modeling because you can reduce the data/computations down into their respective parts and isolate bugs and modeling errors easier. Fixing the problems is easy too because if your work is designed properly, you can easily replace the flawed component, minimizing the effectual change you required. Biased? Maybe, but its all in how your brain chooses to work out the details. Mine tends to be OO-centric with the exception of writing code thats only a few lines long.

Lets write some more utilities so that drug runners and crazies can send undetectible messages to eachother with great ease.
I think you should riot.
"My joystick vibrates on impact..."
Yes, and CNN re-played the same video clip of it for the 3rd year in a row...
MIR was in space way too long. Skylab was brought down responsably. Simply put, the Russians kept their flying pos in air b/c they had no alternative.
In the real world, or the one in your head?

Wow... maybe you should be reviewing one of those physical journals...

Shawn Gordon's inability to make money on GPLd software simply isn't my concern.
... and that my friend, is precisely why there will never be a company that utilizes the GPL and actually turns a profit.

Of course, it's been used for end user - OpenOffice, GAIM, and other projects.
... ok and which ones are owned by companies that are actually attempting to make money? Oh wait.... none of them? Thats what I thought.
Hey, did you get your Navy back yet??
Does it work with JMF and its native libs?
Ever tried it while behind a firewall?
