First off, Yes: when i said JAVA i ment JS.
I wont trash any language, because i havent used most of them, and they all have their purpose.
The point I was getting at is people seemed to want more and more out of a web app, and its comes to a point where you cannot make a stable web app, without "duct-tape".
These app that we make are highly server dependent. Not only do they require security (which JS doesnt help, since the code is client side) they require operations that are cobbled together so they run in a browser.
Stuff like point-click-drag-drop are a client side operation. And doing something as simple as clicking a button, requires a postback, a run through the page life cycle, and the sent back to the client in a way that isnt reliable, or effiencient.
I was using C# and VB as examples because thats what i am paid to program in. (believe me when i say i feel stupid using them). But there are better ways of doing things. Just because it can be done one way, doesnt mean its a very lgical method. So, pictures and text fine .. web based. but when your want basically a full blown Application on your web browser, why not just use an GUI API and any language you see fit, and do it right.
Another thing: you can write a OS based App in one language, how many languages does it take to create a web app? (xhtml, css(i know not a lnaguage, but you get what i mean) JS/AJAX, T-SQL or pl/SQL(RDBMS), C# VB Python php CGI whatever) .. It takes a lot of knowledge and time and bugs to make something like that work.
Then again, maybe im in the wrong field, maybe i should be doing OS devel instead of Web based applications ...

Parent has a good point. I work for a software company that Develops GIS (geopgraphical Information Software). and all of our clients want theor programs to be web based. this means VB or C# with AJAX/JAVA. For complexity of these programs, and the time that goes into them, the logical thing to do would make it a windows based application. the clients dont like the fact that they then have to install software, and put more problems on their IT staff. (User policies, hardware/software conflicts). so we bould everything to work based on IE6 (alot of people still use Windows 2000). Its a fricken nightmare. There are no standards that are standard, and the whole web based framework is a mess.
I know i cant be that old school, but why cant people use C++ and and GUI APIs? there are already protocols for talking to your SQL server and app engine via network, and using a windows Application framwork has many benifits. Ive argued this time and time again with my boss, but thats how they want it.
BTW: when i first Read MVC i thought they ment Microsoft Visual C, not Model View controller .. wtf?

This is a good Idea. There are tons of ways to make money off of software. You dont even have to stick to one idea. For me, for freelance ( I also work for a software company), I would build calendar programs for hairdressers, and web pages for lumber companies and dog groomers. There is great money in this. You can even expand your ideas onto advertisement. Even on a large scheme. Lets say Company X made programs for car computers. Maybe yours can expand on that and be car computer optimization programs.
The main point is dont go and spend your time trying to fight for the right to something not worht it (like eveyone else has mentioned.) If its worth it do it. But otherwise your just might want to go buy the biggest meat grinder you can find, bring it home, and spend all of the time turning your dick into hamburger.
