What's wrong with liking gargoyles? How is that having the mind of a 4 year old? Not everyone goes for a bussiness looking desktop, some of us want our desktop's to look pretty.
I agree. All OSes are inefficient for consoles. The OS on a console should do exactly what is needed and NOTHING else. You don't need multitasking (probally only threading), or swap space, or a TCP/IP stack, or any notion of users or groups or security, etc. I'd imagine the OS on a console really is nothing more than a bootloader to initialize the hardware. Since you have the exact same hardware on every system it would be a lot faster for the games to access it directly rather than through a device driver. Esentially to it seems it would basically be a lot like DOS. DOS made a great game OS because the games could essentially impliment their own OSes. I'd imagine that most of the general purpose functions for doing things like accessing hardware would be implimented in libraries on the compiler side than in syscalls on the console side.
Fine, I'll download a 100meg high quality MPEG. Or apple could A) release the specs for QT3 so people could write their own players (yah right), or release a linux player. Either would make me happy. I hate the thought of rebooting into doze just to watch a trailer (i probally will though).
The accepted pronounciation(i know i spelled it wrong, it's late and i don't care) of "router" is "rowt-er". I've never heard of a "root-er" in my life.
You know what scares me most about al gore being president? Tipper being the first lady. She is the single most harmful person to free speech and freedom of expression this country has ever seen. Her desire to make every child on the planet a "PG kid in an X-Rated society" frightens me.
This will probally change once mozilla has staballized. I think the final goal is to have a free mozilla, and a non-free netscape w/ code that they aren't allowed to release. It's still not gonna be GPL, but it's pretty damned good.
I figured out the RH install program my first time through in no time at all. Solaris x86, I had to install about 5 times before I gave up and half of the questions made no sense, or I just had no clue what the answer. RH is really nice for easy installs. Also, w/ autorpm it makes upgrading beyond simple. I just have my box check every day at 2am for any new updates. It automatically installes updated rpms and sends me an email about new rpms. Not a bad trick. It's really nice to read an email about a new security hole only to find out that your system updated itself 3 days ago.
I personally can't find any problems with RH's bussiness practises. They have a dist that's almost 100% GPL (Netscape and xv are the only exceptions I can think of off hand). They are paying people to code stuff for linux which is being released as GPL. I like redhat.
Redhat got its start by fscking over Slackware

Really? He included glibc in slackware to make it incompatible w/ other dists? Funny up until 5.0 I think it was RedHat used libc5. glibc2 was released sometime around 4.xx, RedHat simply migrated as soon as it had stabalized because glibc2 is better than libc5, and many other dists did the same thing. Get a clue.
Even DHCP isn't fool proof. I have a cable modem and I can set any IP address I want. The DHCP method is nice because it prevents IP collisions. I could just randomly pick IP addresses until I find one that isn't in use then do what ever evil things I wanted to.
Not only do they not tell you they are collecting info, they specifically say they aren't. The upgrade wizard says that they don't send any information about your system to microsoft.
I'd rather not. I'm assuming you work for Escient. Your company is trying to profit off of other people's work. I really can't see much of anything you did do. Somone else came up with the idea and implimented it. Thousands of users populated the database. You bought it. Now you are trying to bully the writers of aplications which use CDDB. I really don't see how you didn't expect that this would cause a revolt against you.
Actually you could get all three "file systems" on one disc. You can have hybrid HFS / iso9660 cds. Since joliet and rock ridge are just extentions to iso9660, I can't think of any reason why you couldn't have a 3way hybrid cd. For the record joliet and rock ridge can exist on the same cd, I did this w/ a redhat cd. I needed rock ridge to preserve file permissions, such as execute, and joliet so it would be readable under windoze (the only machine I had w/ a cdrom was a windoze box). My point is that it would be fairly simple to create a cd that would work under all 3 OSes w/o having to fall back on windoze "standards".
I doubt there will be an injunction, the RIAA tried the same thing with the RIO and failed, I really don't see how they could get an injunction against creative after that.
Actually ads do benifate the record comapanies, and in some (rare) circumstances the artists. The radio companies have to pay the record companies everytime they play a song, the ads provide the revenue for the radio station, some of this money goes to the record companies, then (if they're really lucky) the artists get some of the cash.
I think his point was that by abandoning something when it becomes popular you are just as much on the bandwagon as those who only start paying attention when something becomes popular. This attitude is very often found in music, "I used to like them until they got popular." Listen to "Know it all" by Lagwagon if you really want to understand my point.
Hey for a free T1 i'd buy a pIII, i'd even keep the serial number turned on, of cource i'd run linux on the system so I'd know that it wouldn't actually be read by anything.
You know what I'd like to see? redhat.linux.com, suse.linux.com, slackware.linux.com, and so on. Maybe even debian.linux.com, even though debian isn't really a commercial dist.
Using access as a military database, that's good. "I'm sorry sir, we can't launch the missiles. Why not? Well it seems MS Access corrupted the launch codes. We can still throw rocks at the enemy." Makes you feel secure.

I remember hearing this, right around when he said "it's a terrible waste to lose one's mind," instead of "a mind is a terrible thing to waste."

IIRC quake2 and quake3 were developed on linux and then ported to doze after so the porting cost for linux is $0.

I know I managed to completely lock up everything GNOME related by clicking the little terminal button on the panel. I'll stick w/ KDE for now.

IIRC kdesupport aren't "hacked-up versions." They are just supplied for convienence incase you don't have them.
A name RMS suggested (perhaps jokingly) for linux that incorporates GNU.
