1) Blizzard has an internal binary client that runs natively on Linux (stated in an interview linked on slashdot).
2) They know a large userbase is using Linux to play the game (it is not uncommon to find linux players in EU servers and game masters know that a lot of players are using it)
3) I think that mainly is egg-chicken issue...when one big dev will release for Linux all others will start to
4) World of Goo shows that there's the Linux closed-source-player base market.
Again is only the egg-chicken issue... For sure Ubuntu screwing with Pulseaudio is nto helping stabilize a sort-of-test environment where devs can work...
Hi all,
I was playing WoW, and when I installed 8.10 and used PA my FPS droppped about 33%.
I then removed PA, killed the process and everything was back normal.
Is situation better with 9.04?
I don't want to criticize PA too much but (even as PA developers admitted) when it went out in 8.10 was an immature and slow piece of... software.
How is the situation now?
Which version of PA will be in Ubuntu 9.04?
Any WoW player around trying 9.04?
FYI, I've finished Resistance 2 and I should be halfway though Killzone 2.
I've always played all FPSes from Wolf3D to Far-Cry 2 passing through Doom 3 and Quake 4 (Linux binaries whohooo).
As you can easily find on the internet the graphics of Resi2 where the best (comparable to Crysis, don't imagine to talk about the XBOX 360 it's far away...) before Killzone2 came.
Killzone2 has all the special FXes that made Crysis so good looking, plus it runs on an hardware that costs a lot less (with 300£ you get the PS3 and the game, instead to play Crysis you need a 400£ videocard and a pc and a WinXP/WinVista license...).
Now, I can tell you for sure that the gameplay and the plot of Resi2 are great. It is very immersive and you're straight into the action. If you like the genre, Resi2 is supposed to be the best on PS3.
Killzone2 is very good. It has better graphcis than Resi2 but the plot isn't so tied for the first 2 levels...after a while instead all makes sense and finally you get sucked into it and is really immersive.
Cheerz
Ps. About Far-Cry 2. The graphics were tied to a XBOX 360 (very old looking), the gameplay was very bad...it was the worst game I ever bought!
I don't discuss this, just the graphics are really old and technologically very simple. You can't state in the news that the graphics is the main feature of this game...
Cheers,
Lol, who modded this as troll? Have you ever seen FPSes for PS3 or do you live in '90s?
I play warsow, and I like the graphics of the game, and that graphic is very functional to that kind of FPS.
But this is too much a delusion...
I expected definitely more...
Come on, I'm plying on the PS3 at Killzone 2 and Resistance 2. The graphics is not comparable at all... Are we sure, Michael, that this is a new game?
Cheers,
As long as I can enjoy World of Warcraft on Linux (apart the new cool shadows -not implemented by Blizzard on Windows OpenGL) I think WINE is great.
I know a lot of people that did the big jump because of this.
Cheers,
Hi, I bought a PS3 and together FacCry2 and Resistance 2 (without know anything about Resi2). Here in the UK FarCry 2 was OVER-advertized, so I thought, "must be at least a good game".
Guess what, luckyly I had Resi2 to play during xmas holidays, that was a great game.
I'll try to resell FarCry 2 asap. Even if I get 10 quids out of it I'll consider myself lucky.
The graphics SUCKS (at least compared to Resi 2 and/or Haze and/or Force Unleashed), the gameplay is worse and the story is pathetic!
Really worst game ever....and ask yourself why there's piracy...this is rubbish game. Kudos to the devs that managed to get a free trip to Africa with the excuse to make a (supposedly) great game.
I'm disgusted,
FPS (mouse+keyb is unbeatable) Prove for this is the fact that afaik there are no servers with mixed population for games like CoD 4, Sony told PC players would have a natural advantage.
RTS (try play SC, Wc3 TFT or C&C with a joypad) Good luck playing a RTS with consoles.
MORPG (updates, disk space, customization) Try to think to run WoW on a PS3 not having the chance to add any of the addons. Pathetic.
If you say "but then we'll attach a keyb+mouse to PS3/Xbox360" then think that you'll need a desk to play on. And that probably you want to browse the net. Read./ . Have a chat with gaim or on your preferred IRC channel. And maybe you're watching a movie on the other screen while you're waiting your guildies ready to raid/your teammates to come online to play some Team DM/CTF.
If you think that PC games is for niches, ask yourself how much $$ are making WoW, how many people plays at FPS and RTS...
Cheers,
At least imho, apart the randomness of critical strikes, a lot of weapon/spells have a too wide range of damage.
Reducing that range of damage (keeping the average damage constant but setting the max and min damage towards the average) would balance a lot the game.
Then we have even critical strikes. As a rogue player the latest season I had chances to down =mail armoured opponents in arena in 10 seconds. Some other time I was so unlucky that I could only pray to be defeated fast.
Cheers,
You're right,
BUT, what they do they do it very neat and polished. And considering the current landscape of videogames for PC, this is a win/win situation. less stuff well done >> more buggy stuff.
Cheers,
You're right sir.
The problem is that then PvP relied a lot on gears.
I hope the difference between gears levels will be reduced in WotLK.
Otherwise once SC2 will be out (or id's Rage) I'll jump the ship.
Cheers,
I'm sorry mate, but you can't say that the graphics are 2003.
The polycount is massive, and the use of shaders is predominant too.
Imho they did a great thing, because the style is always the same between vanilla/tbc/wotlk, but, as example, on my 8600 GT vanilla runs at average 60 FPS, tbc average 35, wotlk average 25.
If you don't like the style I'm fine with that. But this graphic has been properly chosen to br 13+ rated.
If you ever saw the first screenshots of WarCraft III RoC (the strategic game), they tried at first to use a realistic looking style, but then they choose to realy on the cartoon style.
It's a matter of style, not a technologic limit.
Cheers,

I'll give Mark some money. I'm a Linux and open source fan and I think that Ubuntu will have my support as seen as this is the distro I'm using.
From the article:
They also want to develop more and more PvP content and create some sort of mechanism for players to gain experience in battlegrounds.
Is this true? I could renew my subscription if I know I could progress my charcter through BGs instead having to be forced doing PvE...
I think it will run great under WINE.
As for WoW, they have:
1) An internal Linux client. They have it.
2) They don't support officially WINE but thanks to WINE they fixed a tremendous bug that was in version 2.1 of the game.
Let's put this way: WINE is not officially supported, Linux isn't officially supported as well but they know that at least 1% WoW population is running WINE (it makes on 10 millions 100.000 players). Once I spoke to a GM. He knew about WINE.
What makes you think SC2 (and Diablo III) won't be supported as well?
Cheers,

My 2 quids
You see, you don't need SaS!!!!
Lol!
I just killed the process and uninstalled the package... Just upgrading should do it isn't it? Btw, shall I do a clean format or not?

Germans are doing it (not central gov but local ones). Prolly English will arrive there as well? I'm confident...
I meant "Is someone opening the eyes of the people which run this country"... Cheers again,

How to easily distribute your Linux binaries: Use OpenGL/OpenAL/Include your current c++ library. The C bindigs are fine. It's extremely easy!

Yep WoW is a big cow of money... 1) 10M players 2) Avergae 13 Eur per month: =1560000000 Eur (aka, 1.5 Billions Eur) per year. Not bad isn't it?
