Yes I know, when I played WoW (from Feb 2005 to Feb 2009) I always played on Ubuntu with OpenGL, but the windows version doesn't support the fancy shadows...that's why I've asked for this as well...
Btw, with the same Config.WTF the Linux version has always been faster than windows...at least for me...
Cheers,
Q1) Given the massive success of WoW on Linux (through wine) are you considering a Linux port of your main incoming titles?
Q2) If no Q1, will you at least consider wine as a release platform for your incoming titles?
Q3) Given the current situation with incresing Linux distribution/usage, what are your future plans for Linux OS?
Q4) Is it so hard to develope the same engine on both D3D and OpenGL?
Q5) Are there any particular effects you couldn't be able to easily implement in OpenGL version (eg. fancy shadows in WoW)? If yes, why?
Q6) Would you reccomend to a young ISV to use OpenGL or better both D3D and OpenGL to create a multi-platform game?
In this game you have 25 different char to chose.
Sure, is no MMOG, but is very well balanced.
In SSFIV you never lose at the seleciton screen, but still all the 25 chars are very different. As example, take 2 similar, like Ryu and Ken. You'll be amazed discovering how the playstyle has to be different between them. If you don't believe me, here there's a link to one of the most comprehensive guides. Take a look to see that even the basic attack moves are different between 25 of them.
This is balance.
This is why I left WoW.
Cheers,
Honestly, what are the real applications for this?
Online gaming?
Would developers release a game in JS, with the full source code exposed to hackers/cheaters?
The only usage would be for other fancy GPU/CPU consuming GUIs?
Cheers,
Easy... not all browser are very secure...
Look here and you'll see why if your browser is old/insecure you'll find yourself in a can of worms (usually if you're running your IE 6.0 in Windows as local Admin)...
Don't forget that a lot of key-loggers to grab password of MMOGs are based on javascript ability to perform bad things...
5 out of 20 people in my old guild of WoW have had their account stolen because of this...
The API to read/write files should be scrapped out from JS...but as sees as it is not, you can use NoScript extensions for FireFox to allow only the scripts/websites you trust.
Personally I think JS should be turned off or used at bare minimum. If I want to browse a web-site, let me browse it, don't turn my browser into a application client. But this is my (old fashion) view...
Do we need better GUIs/Interfaces for Web? Extend HTML, don't use a scripting language that now will be like a proper programming language...
Cheers
This makes me sad...
Personally I think that such argument is for people without willing to fight, to do real things.
How do you find more entertaining a (virtual) world where all is designed to (easily) have success for everyone?
It's like success free for all.
Ask yourself, isn't a bit depressing that every character owns a dragon?
Isn't a bit depressing that every character has killed the same bosses, fought in the same valley/basin for 10000 times?
Isn't definitely depressing that everyone is dressed the same, everyone is basically anonymous?
WoW is good to play with friends just because you can have a chat (on TS/Ventri) while doing stupid things. Without friends to chat with WoW is the worst game ever.
But maybe wouldn't be better to go and play some real games (football, basketball,...) at the park with your friends or have a laugh at the pub?
My 5 cents on WoW skill+PVP. I've played that game for 4 years mainly PvP (1.5 years with a mage and 2.5 years with a rogue).
Skill in WoW PvP doesn't exist. Why? Because you depend on this:
a) counter class/balance
b) RNG (Random NUmbers Generator)
c) gear
d) luck (miss/dodge/parry/resist an important special attack or for example an ability - Vanish - doesn't work when intended)
e) lag
Even in case to duel against the same class b,c,d,e are still valid.
Countless times I've been able to pwn opponents with lesser gear, or I've been pwned by people with better gear or luck.
In vanilla WoW, where the infamous CC trinket wasn;t the same for all classes the usage of some abilities required skill/originality. But since the new PvP trinket all came down to a,b,c,d,e.
If you compare this to a proper PvP game like Street Fighter 4 or Warsow only e is valid.
Even in Arena factor a,b,c (and even d) matter a lot most of all given the fact that the combo of classes can be a win-win situation.
Add to all this racial abilities, or some other factor, like some items that allowed you to jump from one side to the other of the arena map, forcing the opponent to follow you while you have DoTted him...
What ruined the PvP part of WoW has been pretending to fix these points, while given the nature of the game can't be fixed.
Blizzard should have focused on PvP or PvE.
Nothing more nothing less.
I bet when a good PvP game comes out for PC (StarCraft II rings any bell?) they will lose all the PVP playerbase.
They tried to make WoW a e-sport but they miserably failed.
...and run it on wine (on Ubuntu).
But looks like I'll use my money for something else.
You can't strip LAN from SC2, like removing LAN from Q3A...
Shame on you Blizzard, you're just becoming worse and worse...first you ruined WoW, now you are ruining SC2...
The point is that you, as a 12 yro gamer, start doing it in an innocent way, but still is torturing.
I would put a 18+ ERSB on every game in which the task is to deliberatly kill another virtual human.
I'm against banning or censoring.
But still when the general concept is that then I think an 18+ is required. Even the innocent WoW should be 18+.
Maybe Street Fighter would be 12+, but because it only involves to fight, not to kill.
Simplce concept: want to force the player to kill to be able to succeed in your game? 18+ ERSB.
Cheers,
... for example in the ESRB 12 years rated World of WarCraft WotLK there's a quest where you have to torture a prisoner to get intel...
What about this? Is it morally acceptable for 12 yrs old kids?
Are all them children of torture supporters like the previous american administration?
Cheers,
Haha being lectured by an Anonymous Coward is really funny.
Nice try!
Btw I forgot one was 12 the other 11...and I had 1950 rating in 5on5 2000+ in 2on2 and 3on3...
I played mage for 1+ year, then rogue, after the big nerf. Never experienced to play the OP rogue.
I was one of the first rogues to play shadowstep spec in TBC...Always played aggressive combos (mage+rogue/lock+rogue/warr+rogue), never played the flavor of the month or easier combo like rogue+priest.
So please shut up...WotLK hasn't been balanced. And currently is not yet.
And yes, they're losing people...
A lot of people is still paying because of 6 months subscription plan. Just wait for 3~6 months and you'll have a picture of the current situation... The fact people doesn't login a lot anymore and they are merging server doesn't ring a bell?
Cheers,
Sir, you're missing the point.
I'm talking about PvP...the game is not balanced now and has been totally biased towards certain classes for the most WotLK.
I never liked PvE that much but I did it to see new things...I managed to have two characters at rank 11+ in vanilla WoW, I was around 2000 rating for all TBC, but WotLK is totally crap.
That's where they started to ruin the game...
Cheers,
...so they start screwing up everything good of the game.
I started playing in 2005 (in Europe it came in Feb 2005) and quitted 1 month ago after buying SF4 for PS3. I was mainly a PvP player, but I have done basically all the raid (even partially the new one, Ulduar).
I think vanilla WoW was very good, TBC was the most balanced arena wise, WotLK is the worst ever. No funny dungeons, raids or too simple or too long (couldn't they implement Naxx as 4 bg instances of 1.5 hrs each?).
Anyway, leaving the DK class and other still overpowered for months says long about the attention put into the game. This was the game until 2 months ago...
WotLK has been no fun just waste of money and time.
Now that the boat is slowly sinking due to their greedy policies they are trying to save themselves introducing the most absurd concepts...what a missed opportunity not to do it...
Cheers,
The best joke ever....
But considering this and the fact Obama is facing resistance for publich health I fear you're not so much away from reality...
Cheers
I don't know if it's ok or not...but I think if it's needed then a game is not well balanced (against CPU I mean, not the game itself).
For example, if you play in the easiest mode at SF4 the final boss is able to destroy you anyway, while in all the other enounters the opponents are really...easy.
Now, I think that SF4 is a great game, well balanced etc etc. Really I stopped WoW to play SF4 PvP.
But as a single player game the fact the last boss is very hard even in easiest mode is a bit depressing, considering the quality of the game itself.
But to be 100% honest there could be a reason for that...in order to unlock all the characters you have to defeat the final boss some times straight without losing a game...so CAPCOM knew that everyone would play the game at easiest mode just to unlock all 25 characters...so basically this could be seen as a possible motivation to implement this hard boss as the fact everyone will face him at easiest mode...but still I don't like this.
I'm against demo mode but in favour of balanced games.
Cheers,
First, I agree with EU.
American antitrust is proven not to work. Microsoft always abused of its monopoly position and you, americans, did nothing. Zero. Nada.
This decision is thought but I think that MS will be forced to provide a simple webpage that will direct the users to the main web-pages of the most diffused browsers.
How do I browse the above web page?
With a simple one page only browser that is allowed only to display that page.
I know it sounds ridicolous, but it's what the EU will force MS to do...
And if you think carefully is the only way MS can't force the PC vendors to embed once again IE. Sorry guys but we all know that if MS can cheat/bribe they will do it. At least is what they have done in the latest...15 years?
Be honest: do you really think that if MS will leave (so called) free choice to PC vendors, behind, those will be forced to embed IE?
...and the only Blue Ray I own is The 300.
Honestly with that kind of movie the difference between DVD/BR is huge on my full-HDMI screen...
But I don't think I will buy any BR in the near future...indeed, with mediatomb I can watch everything I want on my PS3, plus DVD can be very very cheap...
Who cares about BR when I can see full HD MP4 on my PS3?
Cheers,
1) The luck factor. If you strike 4 crit in a row excellent, 4 white hit in a row, suck
2) The Flavor Of The Month factor
3) The you must organize to have -maybe- fun in arena
4) The you have to grind to get anything, otherwise BGs would be dead
But most of all:
*5 pts combo*) The imbalance factor... PvP is not balanced at all...
SF4:
a) Balanced
b) You are responsible for the char you play
c) No random factor
d) Win or lose is up to you only.
Sorry Blizzard but WoW has definitely bombed now...(again I've played PvP for 4 yrs basically)...
Cheers,

When you can only blame yourself (or the pad - but I'm getting a proper pad) if you lose and not the luck or the FOTM combo (Flavor Of The Month), and the game is actually balanced, plus it does not require grinding, well... I think my experience with WoW and mainly all MMORPGS is definitely suspended, not to say over... Cheers
