  3. Increased battery life? on VMware Promises Multiple OSs On One Cellphone · · Score: 1

The first thing that came to my mind when I read this was extended battery life. With my old phone, which was only a phone, the battery lasted for days and days. My Tilt won't make it 24 hours unless I never actually use it and I have good signal quality the whole time.
Maybe, through virtualization, my phone could be "just a phone" until I need the rest of the stuff. If you run "phone" as one VM and "mobile computer" as another VM and only start it up when you actually need the mobile computer stuff. That's gotta lead to longer battery life... assuming, of course, the virtualization platform doesn't eat up what I'm saving by not running the extra stuff.

Alas, it will probably only be used as a marketing gimmick which will, in the end, just cost me more money.

  4. Would I know if Diebold ate my vote? on Discuss the US Presidential Election · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was thinking about this as I showed my 7 year-old daughter how we vote in MD (this year anyway...diebold is going away). She pressed the green button and the machine spit out my card with a "kachunk" and said my vote was registered. I walked away feeling a bit incomplete. My daughter said, "That's it?" That's how I felt about it. I felt the same way four years ago. How would I know if the computer actually registered my vote. I feel like if I can't slip a ballot into a box I should at least get a receipt. Probably the most disappointing moment was when I had to get the I Voted sticker off the roll myself. I could have taken the whole roll if I wanted to. My daughter loves stickers. Seriously though, does anyone have a story where they're certain the machine did NOT register their vote?

I would guess that the keyboard used for the video was scoped before and the software was looking for that keyboard's particular output. I noticed that the program expected a set number or characters to be captured "trust no one" is twelve keystrokes. The program terminated after the last character he typed, which I thought was odd. If it wasn't sort of rigged to work the program would have continued listening for input until it was told to stop...

Right... which is exactly how they want you to feel. They released crappy ads that you hated and followed them up with ads which are only marginally better and you're calling them pretty good. This ad campaign is no mistake. What I'm about to say is so obvious I can't believe I'm actually taking the time to do so: Microsoft releases Vista... it's crap and you hate it... Next comes Windows 7 which will be marginally better crap and you'll love it... all because you're taking to the TV based training so well... This all just reminded me of something totally unrelated. How would they know if it's something that interests them? Is there any evidence that even the NSA can crack, say, AES in a reasonable amount of time?

I would think the source of the files could tell them what's potentially interesting even if the contents can't be readily viewed. Simply the amount of data being stored could even be revealing when viewed over a longer period of time. Upswings in storage needs could indicate upswings in operational activity, which might give them clues as to when to watch for other types of traffic they monitor (presumably everything). So whether or not they can crack AES might not matter. But if they can, I'm sure they'll not be admitting to it any time soon.
