Yes, we can never prove the non-existence of invisible pink unicorns. As far as we know, the prerequisites for invisible pink unicorns (IPU) do not exist in this universe.
Actually I can prove the non-existence of invisible pink unicorns since it is a logical contradiction. Invisible things by definition cannot have a color.
This is despite EA Games being very reluctant to support mods. Even the map editor promised shortly after the game was released only came out almost a year later and after a lot of complaining in the BF community.
Sounds familiar. A buddy of mine does work on the
Forgotten Hope mod for Battlefield 1942, and I can remember him bitching about EA's tools. He mentioned that some of the guys from his mod team would respond to replies by EA Games of "Well, what more do you want?" with a resounding "Source code!"
I guess they were tired of EA dragging their feet and wanted to make some tools of their own.
For someone so stubborn, he sure was willing to completely remove the "unnecessary" Helm's Deep, among other things. This was a change he readily offered himself.
The Battle of Hornburg (Helm's Deep) only took up a few pages of The Two Towers. It ended up being an unexpected side-quest as King Theoden, some of his Rohirrim, and some of the Fellowship were going off to defend Rohan at the front of battle I believe. So yes, Helm's Deep is unnecessary.
I think you're confusing what happened in the movie (in which The Battle of Hornburg seemed to take up almost half of the movie) to the events in the original source. Have you read The Two Towers?
It's nice to hear that Kasparov could keep up with the computer in chess, but what about the ancient Chinese boardgame Go.
Yes, that's right - Go. Computers haven't come close to competing with humans in that game. Yessireebob, Go. Go Go Go Go Go. Can't say enough about it really.
(There isn't a real point to this post. Just trying to get a rise out of SpaceCoyote. This sort of thing tends to put him into fits. Watch for one of his repeated posts.)
I don't know. I like the concept, but I never got into it because I was under the impression that the head guy from Monster House was an annoying, loud-mouthed prick.
Jesse James, however, is one of the best parts of Monster Garage imho.
Nonetheless, the reasons he gives are still a form of political correctness. He's afraid of people being exposed to certain ideas, even when they're HIS ideas.
I may be splitting hairs, but it's more a case of being afraid of how his expressed ideas may be twisted from what he intended by others than just exposing them to people. I tend to see Politically Correctness to be more a case of "I hope I don't offend people with what I wrote" than "I hope what I wrote isn't used by a movement I'm against."
You may have a point, though, when you say Look, the people you are afraid of, if they're bad as you think they are, are going to put pressure on young girls whether Neil writes his story or not. So do you want them handing that girl a Neil Gaiman story, or a Jack Chick tract?
I don't know if I'm necessarily afraid of these people, though. More like sickened by their methods than afraid. Jack Chick can be hilarious to read if you're in the right mood. But it gets scary when you realize that he's serious.
I don't know why you keep getting modded as flamebait.
I think you let your rage over a certain topic prevent you from understanding Gaiman's reasoning for not writing said story. He doesn't want his story to be used by zealots to hurt or intimidate women already in a difficult situation. From what I read, he would probably be happy to see a woman thinking of getting an abortion read the story and change her mind if everything worked out for the better.
The stuff about the PC police being after him and changing his mind exists between your ears and nowhere else. It seems that Mr. Gaiman thought of some consequences of the story he personally didn't like and decided aggainst it. I'm sorry his choice wasn't one you agree with. Perhaps you could write your own comic the way you wanted it to be told instead of calling people names?
I for one enjoy playing violent games, in particular Grand Theft Auto Vice City... but if I had kids old enough to use a console, even as teenagers, I'd be very reluctant to let them play such a game. Am i a hypocrite?
No you're not a hypocrite. This is because kids are not yet mature enough to handle the violence of these games but you are. And as your kids' parent you have a right to judge what is appropriate and what isn't.
If at some point they enjoy the same types of violent games at the same age as you started playing them and you don't let them play then, yeah, you're a hypocrite.
The ideal pair? Dean and Clark. A thinker and an individual who gets things done. What a concept!
Yeah that does sound like a good ticket. Clark could help take away the perception that Democrats are weak on defense. Only problem is, Dean attacked Clark at the debate for being a new-comer to the Deomcratic party, hinting that he wasn't a true Democrat. (Al Sharpton came to Clark's defense with a funny line.)
Dean is my tentative favorite candidate right now, but he seems like a hot-head who could burn some bridges. If so, I hope he can get over himself.
Yeah. If I remeber it right, Aragorn goes somewhere alone for a while and then comes back looking old and tired. Later on, Gandalf finds out what happens and is amazed that Aragorn did so. The way Aragorn tells it, the conflict nearly breaks him. It's something that even Gandalf doesn't dare try!
Seeing the sword is a real shock for Sauron even though he is easily the most powerful being on Middle Earth. I think it's Gandalf who says of him, "He still knows fear."
I'm definitely re-reading the 3rd book before I see the movie.
My favorite scene from the trailer is when Aragorn reclaims the Narsil from Elrond... man, that scene has some real power in it (if you read the books, ofcoz):)
And having read the books, I can say it's about time that Aragorn gets Narsil. It would have been better if it was reforged by the Elves and then taken by him right after the Coucil of Elrond like it was supposed to, however. Oh well, better late than never.
I hope they keep the part from the book where Aragorn uses the Palantir to contact Sauron and show him the sword, thus spurning his evilness to battle. (No really - look it up. It happened.)
The Fox film was way too Americanized. The plot wasn't retchworthy, but it wasn't that good, either, and it didn't mesh well with the Dr. Who universe on a stylistic level.
The absolute worst thing about the Fox film was the "revelation" that the Doctor was part human. This is an unforgivable twist that should be removed from memory.
Also, if I remember correctly, the Master had some plot to destroy everything which he could have easily used in the "past" but for some reason just thought of it then. (When everybody is traveling through time, the past is a shaky concept.) And the Master sucking away all the the Doctor's lives seemed way overdone as well.
It seems that "Americanized" means having no concept of the word "subtelty".
Uh, gee, the vast majority of scientists do not believe that human activity is a substantial part of global warming. But, hey, don't let facts get in the way.
I probably shouldn't be responding to an AC, but how can you make a charge for others ignoring "facts" when you provide no evidence for said facts? Most scientists don't believe humans are a significant factor for global warming you say. What study shows this? Can you cite it? Do most of these scientists come from fields relevant to the issue? If you can't answer these questions then you shouldn't have bothered writing your post in the first place as it has no worth.
From what I've seen, if you look through articles in Scientific American regarding humanity affecting global warming there are pretty convincing arguments from both sides of the coin. The issue is far from settled either way. If someone would like to prove me wrong I'd be more than happy to see your case.
Unfortunately I just started reading this thread recently. But right when I saw people posting about Clinton failing to receive Bin Laden, the Al Franken excerpt came to mind.
If this wasn't so late, I'd suggest you be modded through the roof.
What really amazed me was that Breathed used his comic to openly criticize the War on Drugs quite eloquently at a time when such sentiments were extremely unpopular. Heck, they're extremely unpopular now.
The thing that really ticks me off is that at my school there are certain Sun keyboards that have the Ctrl key where you describe and others where that put it in the more expected place.
It can be a real bitch to get used to the configuration of the machine you happen to log into.
Yeah, Chris Ware is incredible. He has one of the most unique styles I've every seen.
I only have a cursory knowledge of the comics that are around compared to some people, but I can remember going to a local comic shop and just having to buy the "Acme Novelty Company" books as they were coming out.
The old style of illustration he uses is totally out of whack with the themes of his stories. Also, the tiny phony advertisements he would put on the backs of covers of the Acme books were absolutely hilarious and absolutely disturbing at the same time.
Actually I can prove the non-existence of invisible pink unicorns since it is a logical contradiction. Invisible things by definition cannot have a color.

I just wanted to comment that that's an excellent .sig you've got there. Does it come from anywhere in particular?
Oh, their status could be worse. They could be trolls.
It's nice to hear that Kasparov could keep up with the computer in chess, but what about the ancient Chinese boardgame Go.

Sounds like you should try out for coming on an episode of "Monster Garage."
Gosh but I can't get enough of that stupid little show.
This reminds me of a great Lewis Black joke...
"MTV is to music what KFC is to chicken."
So true.
I may be splitting hairs, but it's more a case of being afraid of how his expressed ideas may be twisted from what he intended by others than just exposing them to people. I think the reviewer was trying to be funny. Seeing as how he wasn't, I'm not surprised that you missed it.

Before anyone else points it out, nobody has a concept of the word "subtelty" because "subtelty" isn't a word.
Subtlety.
There. Much better.

Looking around, it seems that the EM radiation hitting the surface of the moon won't create much heat after all.
Sorry everybody.
