Apart from the home screen, i don't see what's the big improvement, just another try to outbling apple's piano black darkness. A step in the right direction though.
Way more mainstream? Why? They're profitable, got money in the bank, become to own certain profitable market niches and still growing. My concern is that with Jobs' pedantry leaving with him, apple might actually start producing 'mainstream', that's gotten everybody else in trouble.
There are 'watchers' when there's an election in some distant african country, to make sure the elections are 'free and fair'. Who's watching the watchers? Having previously had problems with elections...

1400 pounds would amount to some 600 kg not 17. No need of creating a false sensation of an ultrastrong ultralight material among eager students.
