First off, most here would agree that spammers are sub-human, at best.
Spammers are the modern equivalent of snake-oil salesman, and should enjoy the same punishments - tar & feathering, stockades, gallows, etc.
The difference is, if laws are changed, I'm perfectly willing to go get my hands dirty. Most people aren't.
Finally, remember these people are FORCING their way in to where the are not wanted. Using more "civilized" methods to stop them hasn't worked - more drastic measures are needed.
Its called "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!" Just look at the reaction to the US national "Do not call" list. One annoying phone call is just that. A systematic pattern of annoying phone calls crosses the line and becomes harassment.
Spam has gone waaaaaaay over that line. Telemarketers can be gotten rid of. Bulk snail mail can be stopped. Spammers WON'T stop. They don't care how much collateral damage they cause because it costs them nothing.
The ONLY reason many of these spammers are alive is because it is unfortunately illegal to kill them at this time. And yes, I would have absolutely no trouble pulling the trigger myself, if it were to become legal.
So go ahead and be an appologist for spammers. You've missed the point entirely.
I can't wait for the day I see a news headline about a dead spammer, and even better when it becomes so routine it doesn't make the front page.
Last Thursday or Friday's USA Today had a story/interview with the cajun spammer. (It was on the front page of the Money section.)
He claims income of $20k to $40k per month. (I wonder what the IRS has to say on that. Wouldn't it be wonderful if he went down for tax evasion? Talk about a law with teeth.)
On a side note I got quoted in that article - to the effect of "Why does this vermin still have a pulse?"
His wife had the audacity to complain and wonder why anyone would want to kill him over a "piece of virtual mail".
I wish i had my telephone * cheat sheet handy. My provider has a *# that logs the call as a harrassing phone call and logs it for further review and follow up by the provider and law enforcement.
due to the sheer volume, many major isp's have accidently flagged the confirmation mails as spam. Check your junk mail folders. More details are available at msnbc.com among places.
What we need is a site similar to the Nuremberg Files site.
Complete data on spammers. Name, address, phone numbers, place of business/employment, car make/model/license plate. Photos of spammers, their families, homes, and cars, etc.
Put a bright spotlight on these roaches and watch em scramble. Thanks to the pro-life/anti-abortion movement, this tactic is perfectly legal.
The only question is how long it would take spammers to start launching DDOS attacks on it.
Unionization arises when a company abuses its employees in unconsionable fashion. Look at the history of the trucking and shipping industries - the unbelievable ways management mistreated the employees.
This WILL happen in the IT sector if companies don't wake up. It will be a horrible result in the long term, but it will happen. The employee vs employer stage has been set. As management continues to demand more and more unreasonable things of employees, the bitterness will increase until some group forms up to take action.
So look around, a new Jimmy Hoffa could be in the making - with all that that implies...
If a secure authentication type system of email was to be implemented, the time to do it is past. Spam has become such a major problem that the US government has taken notice. The proverbial camel has its nose in the tent. Look forward to having Uncle Sam sticking his nose all over the place on the internet now.
The only plus side might be that a few of those foaming-at-the-mouth ultra conservatives might give themselves a heart attack when they see some of the sites that are spamvertised.
If you are willing to spend the $, good high power maggies can be purchased from ratheyon and others - 10 cm/S band maggie, 60kw, 3 GHz should run around $1,000 US or so. Use about a 12kv supply at 5 amps and there is your nice big pulse.
Do NOT bump the hv output of your power supply unless you like waking up on the other side of the room feeling like someone has given you a professional beating with a baseball bat. (Yes that is the voice of experience)
after your scenario happened once or twice, I think we would see a dramatic reduction in spam.
I'm actually surprised that there hasn't been a case of spammer lynching as yet.
Like most people the only thing that keeps me from doing it is the thought of spending 30 years in prison. Not worth taking the chance of getting a couple of fellow rabid anti-spammers to sit on your jury.
That said, if you were sitting on a jury for the trial of someone who killed a spammer, would you vote for conviction?
Create/use a protection system to prevent spam and protect your mailbox, then claim a dmca violation against the spammers for bypassing your protection device.
courts these days have allowed shakier cases to stand, and you can't lose. either you hit the spammer hard, or the dmca loses.
sounds like a plan to me. at least until we can get fish and game departments to issue spammer tags. how much would you pay to bag a spammer?
That was done in Germany too. Until one day some prominent politician got one. The wife opened up the mail. Hmmm - the woman in the passenger seat was NOT her.
Pictures are no longer mailed with the ticket. I would assume that they would be available in court though.
I get almost 0 junk snail mail - a nasty letter to the DMA and a couple of the major marketing companies, along with a phone call to the credit card company, and an extremely harshly written letter to the 3 credit bureaus. Probably $2 worth of stamps.
Results - the only bulk mail I get is the local town stuff, sent to every resident. The local grocery store sales etc. No pre-approved credit card stuff, etc.
IF spammers worked like this, there wouldn't be a problem. The real problem is spammers WON'T stop spamming. Until they are convinced otherwise, they will continue to be a problem.
Personally I believe that won't happen until 2 or 3 are killed. I seriously doubt that any real legislation will ever come from the government that will fix the problem.
Certain senatorial scum have most likely killed the bill this year. With some little rider attached to the budget, there will be no funds for setting up the national don't call list. One of the responsible vermin is a republican senator from Louisiana. (sorry I don't have the time to find the links to the story again, but it was by AP yesterday)
always nice to know our senators are busy pocketing bribes from the DMA vermin.
I doubt it. All it would take are a few instances of this and spammers would be even harder to identify.
I think the only reason most of us haven't done something like that is fear of the consequences. How many/.'ers would pull the trigger on some scum like Ralsky if it was legal to do so? I know I would in an instant - although I don't think he deserves such a quick and painless death - hmmm gutshot maybe?
If someone had just very quickly popped Spamford Wallace early in his career, I doubt spam would have proliferated as fast as it has. There is a big difference between infamy and having to constantly look over your shoulder paranoia.
We need to have a hunting season for spammers - I'd glading pony up a few grand for a tag to go bag a spammer - hmm with the budget crisis in most states, this could be a way out for them - generate revenues and make the general public happy at the same time. Make it more interesting and have archery and black powder seasons for em too./end fantasy
SBC wouldn't know how to treat a customer properly if their existance depended on it. Unfortunately they can pretty much do what they please, as they have near monoploy status now. I would hate to see Direct-TV fall to them.
As for me, I'm now in a baby-bell free zone, and love it.
well, if you are behind on your car payments, maybe owe more than the car is worth, you could accidentally-on-purpose leave the keys in the car in a bad neighborhood...
that is the kind of loss the insurance company is concerned about. I don't agree with them checking your credit records, although I can see where they would be justified in talking to the lein holder - who wants to know you are insured anyway.
You CAN get rid of the bulk mail. A note to the DMA and the 3 credit bureaus will eliminate over 90% of it, just leaving the local stuff.
That you can get rid of with form 1500 from the post office. All kinds of good info at www.junkbusters.com
Spammers will NOT stop, and don't care. Thats why so many of us want them rendered physically incapable of spamming by whatever means necessary.
First off, most here would agree that spammers are sub-human, at best.

Hell, IF I legally could, I'd shoot them both.

YES!

Not quite - don't know who to credit with this quote:
"If you steal from one person its plagarism. Stealing from many is research."
better yet. just state that anyone who kills any of the major spammers will be given a full pardon for their act of public service.
You think cockroaches scatter fast when the lights are turned on? Think how fast the spammers will scatter when its open season.
This may be borderline flamebait, but since nothing else has worked to solve the spam problem.

Just wait for haloween >:)
A friend dealt with a local hot-rodder like this one year...
Take pumpkin and remove seeds, etc.
Fill with concrete
Set out by road in front of house (his street didn't have sidwalks)
Wait
ba-ba brump ba-ba brump...bwaaaaaaaaaaa-CRUNCH!!!!!
It was a LONG time before that car was able to terrorize the neighborhood.
Quite simply - justifiable homicide.
at the risk of being flamebait

This incident has happened once. All new and returning students should be given an updated school policy with the following addendum:
Any use of the schools network for the purposes of aiding or supporting spam will result in immediate expulsion. No exceptions.
Simple, brutal, efficient. No more problem.

Rapid City, SD
Not one, but TWO cable compaines offering full phone/tv/internet, $99/month
I'm really glad of that because the local pots provider is Quest, who is quite capable of giving SBC a run for the incompetent customer service award.
Overbuilt cable is the solution to many of the problems that satellite can't fix. Its just the infrastructure buildout is usually cost prohibitive.
SBC wouldn't know how to treat a customer properly if their existance depended on it. Unfortunately they can pretty much do what they please, as they have near monoploy status now. I would hate to see Direct-TV fall to them.

Elton John - The bitch is back
Anthrax - Starting up a posse
anyone else have some apropriate music to say goodbye to that #$%^ ?
the songs should of course be downloaded off kazaa etc, just for that extra little bite
