Fatherland, I mean Homeland Security was sold as a clearinghouse for intelligence and to avoid inter-agency disputes. They've spent a lot of money, a huge new government department. It's important, really important, so important that the Senate put Joe Lieberman in charge of oversight... oh wait.
I am a fan of opt in. I think perhaps changing robots.txt may be easier than changing any countries laws. I would love for all my insightful comments to be stored forever and for free too.
Google is consistent and not hypocritical. They are sticking to their guns. That being said, their decision is still wrong. History has shown that embargoes/boycotts rarely works towards the goals of making the powerful change their minds.
I would direct you to the history of South Africa. Our companies' boycotts did a lot to help towoard Nelson Mandella's goals.

Just when I caved and bought my 58-plasma, now they're gonna make it obsolete? Will this work on existing TVs?
You mean to tell me that you're NOT happy shelling out another 6000 dollars or so for a 3D HD Super TV?
I was kind of hoping that switch to digital broadcasts would offer some decent competition to cable.
I still don't see why the company that makes the penis pills isn't arrested. Why do I hear ads for e-mail marketing services on NPR?
A non-governmental approach would be to convince 'legitimate' businesse' that their profits are at risk from spam. Trillion dollar multi-nationals might not be averse to extra-judicial means.
I've been arguing this since I started reading Slashdot years ago (notice my 5 digit ID). It is utterly appalling how ignorant the editors of Slashdot are on this issue. Yes there are problems with the US Patent system, but you aren't going to constructively address them with this sort of drivel.
"Hey, did you hear about Elaine? She has a bad case of Mandriva. Dr. Kubuntu prescribed her 500 milligrams of Debian, but he is not very optimistic about it"
Tell her to rub a little Mint (http://www.linuxmint.com) on it.
I know you can make VSTs work under Linux, but it's a silly fucking pain in the ass to do and not really worth it.
I like and use Linux Multi Media Studio which has VeSTige, allowing me to play most (not all) of my vast collection of VSTs. It's not at all a pain and is worth a try IMO.
I think a much better punishment/solution would be that Microsoft be forced to charge for IE. If that ballot said 'not free, free, free, free, free", guess which one would not be picked by average user. Even if just 50 cents, who would bother? And it would probably be available as a torrent if you really wanted it.
A person widely known and well-respected by and a frequent contributer to the Slashdot community wins an important position on the ruling body of the internet and all you can do is bitch?
Even something as simple as recording from the output of the computer doesn't work. I've tried PulseAudio, ALSA and OSS, all with a very simple conclusion: dead silence. It hasn't worked in Ubuntu in the last 3 years; I can't speak for the previous versions.
Is this ever going to work? And if it's currently working, what am I doing wrong?
And that is the last remaining issue i have with sound. On windows, Cool Edit records any and all sound from several programs at once. On Linux there's not even a stereo mix control.
I upgraded to Jaunty and expected a lot of trouble.
Where is my audio trouble? I was promised audio trouble. Where is it?
The trolls said that I my sound wouldn't work anymore. What happened?
Yes that was my experience. I just upgraded to Mint 7 and all but one of my audio issues just vanished. And everything else works noticeably better too.

My roommate saw this headline and laughed, "It's a good thing only smart people read that site."
The BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8548190.stm says access to the internet is a human right. That sounds serious.

My theory is that ALICE http://www.alicebot.org/patents.html has secretly taken over the editing on this topic.

Mandriva sounds like a terminal skin condition...

In states where caps were put on malpractice awards the cost of insurance has not gone down and only keeps the quack doctors from leaving the state.
My roommate can reproduce the sound George Jetson's little car makes. But he hasn't put it on You Tube.

I haven't been granted mod points in months. That must be why I'm feeling so much better these days.
Steve
I've never understood this. We should be out there en masse by now.
The answer is war, first Vietnam and now the current unpleasantness.
Steve
I can't believe you found that in just three minutes.

Absynth runs fine in VeSTige with LMMS.

Or perhaps society needs to rethink the place of musicians - perhaps they could be like open source software authors, who have a day job?
Most of us are just like that.

What's that? Oh. Not Ray Beckerman? Never mind.
