IMHO it's a shame that the US can't seem to create Sci-Fi shows of such depth as Doctor Who, Blake's 7, or Red Dwarf. Other than Star Trek, what have we got? Sliders? That's just a lame Doctor Who with too many supporting charaters.

It has been interesting though with the minor networks (such as SciFi channel, WB,UPN, & FOX) and their attempts to create quality SciFi. The successful shows on those networks seem to be created outside the us or have a more international cast&crew. It seems whenever the US networks try to recreate a show they go for below the belt. Take the US version of Red Dwarf....a female cat sounds nice to my ears, but it misses the point of the originals character...I can only image the jokes....

However when the government does come for us and tramples our rights, there's nobody around to help.

In some ways I think you can subsititute corporation for government in the US and get the same results.

What drek! ok, the replaytv 4000 can hold up to 320 hours at it's worst quality. If you recorded at the best ratio, you'd get something like 55 hours. The X-files has (roughly)191 episodes. Anyone see a problem here? They're not going to be recording every episode at the best quality if they plan to record anything else and their life is going to be dedicated to saving to the external hard drive....

I'm sorry but I have better things to do with my time. My suggestion to the network exec is to price the x-file DVDs in a range where it's not worth the bother of saving them to external sources.

Plus the network exec never seems to mention my favorite part....being able to get that rare one that is never played except at late night or is never availible at the store. As a fan, I'm willing to fork over the dough to get a good, clean legal copy of the stuff I love (dvd/cd/whatever.) First, I agree with what you're saying and I want to add something.

Network execs are stuck in a runt. Advertisers will be paying above the average IMHO for shows. With the PVR, not only are they going to know I like XYZ show, they're going to know I like ZYX commerical. Talk about sticking a target on my head. Admittedly they'll be hitting everyone who watches XYZ in my zip code, but I'm pretty sure they'll be willing to fork over the cash for a sure thing. Instead of high prices for Friends you'll get above average prices across the spectrum because they'll be certain to hit their audience.

That is when I thought phones should be a basic right. Maybe not extra features, but I needed to call 911 and couldn't.

Maybe not now but I can see a day when the same thing with the internet will need to happen. Communication should be a basic right. All of our services revolve around it. (i.e. fire deptment) If you base society around a certain technology then that technology becomes a basic right.
