Also being able to back up all your data in a standardised way rather than requiring exchange-specific backup tools...

This is a highly underrated observation! Exchange is an absolute PITA to back up - especially 2007/2010. We've gone through various tools (Symantec, etc) and are still yet to find a solution that does the job well.

We all hate Lotus notes, yes, but everything is in a file and that you can view/modify/backup that file with ease. Oh how I wish Exchange would subscribe to the 'everything is a file' mantra.

No, not quite - stereotyping/generalising is an element of sexism in many cases, but not the definition of it. I don't find, in any way, that the books elevate one sex over the other as more valuable.

He, in good faith, as a web-admin for the CyanogenMod project, 'donated' the domain name and maintained it for them. What you're missing is the extortion and fraud he subversively and covertly performed when acting as a web-admin for the CyanogenMod project. When he was confronted by this his response was to attempt to blackmail the CyanogenMod team into paying $10k to keep their domain - since, even though he donated it, he still held the keys. Hijacking is misleading and too soft a word. He blackmailed, backstabbed, defrauded and embezzeled. The guy is the definition of deplorable conduct.

I appreciate your well described strawman. However, I believe you've missed my point. 'Smart' devices (read: tablets/phones) are already outpacing PC counterparts in terms of raw sales. Their relevance increases as more people use them more frequently than their PCs. Now, what has this got to do with my suggestion of Microsoft being marginalized? Well, they're not in the game, are they?

Am I saying you won't be using a PC when you head into work tomorrow? Nope. Was that what I was suggesting...at all? Nope.

This isn't an Apple only problem. With any delivery system, as soon as you hit critical mass people get lost in the din. Look at music, movies, books, etc. It's all the same and Microsoft will have the same problems if they too can get their store off the ground.

  21. Re:"could have a big problem" on Trouble For Microsoft Developers With the Windows Store · · Score: 2, Insightful

I see this tablet/phone foray as one of Microsoft's last rolls of the dice. If this doesn't work then they'll be marginalized sooner rather than later. I know its been 'heralded' for too long, but we are actually seeing a shift in the primary use of computers. PCs, like it or not are fast heading towards niche status.

I advise you to now swallow a few grains of salt.

400,000 being activated daily, but how many are being discarded daily? There's a lot of crap Android hardware out there. Also, what are the turnover rates for Windows gear? I haven't RTFA, but I'm assuming Gartner takes all this and more into account.
