It is a known fact that several JVMs out there do leak just by running. Even if you try, Java, with its language constructs, makes it difficult to control memory management and fine tuning.
Look at the WeakReference class and its family, if this is not a fine tuned memory management i don't know what it is. But to use it correctly you have to understandt the Java memory model.
Also I have a some servers running a J2EE app and I currently have a 6 month up time. Last down time was a scheduled application update.
