Maybe if people here were a bit more realistic and didn't assume the majority of people were like the minority of users (total dullards), we'd be a bit better of. Just because someone doesn't understand the intricacies of IPv6 migration (more accurately, does not care to hear about that from you), doesn't mean they are so uninformed that they are not aware of the software they run. You know, the one called INTERNET EXPLORER where on the title bar it says INTERNET EXPLORER and the shortcut says INTERNET EXPLORER... etc.

Two things I want to mention about this:

First is the saying that if you ask all the economists to lay down on the ground and point towards north you would find a pile of people pointing in all different directions.

The second (more serious) statement is regarding the Hawley-Smoot Act which is Wiki'd to say:

Another factor contributing to the Great Depression was America's position in international trade. Protectionist impulses would drive nations to protect domestic production against competition from foreign imports by erecting high tariff walls. The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act of June 1930 raised U.S. tariffs to unprecedented levels. It practically closed U.S. borders and, with retaliatory tariffs from U.S. trading partners, caused the immediate collapse of the most important export industry, American agriculture. American foreign trade seriously declined, and the volume of world trade steadily decreased. Prior to the Great Depression, a petition signed by over 1000 economists was presented to the U.S. government warning that the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act would bring disastrous economic repercussions, however, this did not stop the act from being signed into law.

This was, to remind everyone, at the beginning of the Great Depression. Protectionism did not help. I don't think we're repeating the same mistake, but pay attention...

This is completely correct, of course. And the reason for this is that with all of these devices you need to make them as small as possible. Besides the obvious engineering feat of putting in laptop circuitry, camera circuitry, and electric toothbrush circuitry all inside one cellphome, the fact is, it just doesn't make sense.

This is why, I think, there will never be a wildly popular laptop/pda combo. The PDA is supposed to be small. The laptop is supposed to be large enough to be functional. Then idiots like QOQOQOQQOO (or whatever that's called) make something in between that doesn't really do everything. I'd rather have a kickass music player instead of it having the ability to take crappy pictures as well.

Alright, let's see Grand Theft Auto is in the top 20! Of course it is. So are other "classics" like... um, Gag! And, uh, Battlezone! Right, Battlezone. That's made a substantial, uh, impact on gaming today.

Like it or not, Grand Theft Auto III was wildly, almost inconcievably popular, and not just amongst us Gamers, but in the general populace. It had incredible impact in the console world, still sold well last year (as an XBox version), and has made it on countless "Best of All Time" / "Most Influential Games" lists. It is similar to Pac-Man, Mario, Doom, etc. in that even non-Gamers are aware of it. Of course GTA was popular, as was GTA2. But that's like saying Unreal is as popular as Unreal Tournament.

So, please, don't overreact. The poster was correct. That doesn't mean GTA wasn't known or popular, but it in NO way compares to what GTAIII is.

If the program recognized that another player was not a Southampton entry, it would immediately defect to act as a spoiler for the non-Southampton player. The result is that Southampton had the top three performers -- but also a load of utter failures at the bottom of the table who sacrificed themselves for the good of the team. Another twist to the game was the addition of noise, which allowed some moves to be deliberately misrepresented. In the original game, the two prisoners could not communicate. But Southampton's design lets the prisoners do the equivalent of signaling to each other their intentions by tapping in Morse code on the prison wall. Kendall noted that there was nothing in the competition rules to preclude such a strategy, though he admitted that the ability to submit multiple players means it's difficult to tell whether this strategy would really beat Tit for Tat in the original version. But he believes it would be impossible to prevent collusion between entrants.

Yeah, that's not the Prisoner's Dilemma. Or even the Iterated PD. This whole "signaligng Morse code" on the prison walls is nonsense, because it was not part of the original plan. Just because it's not in the rules doesn't mean you can do it. In Chess there's no rule specifically against me bringing a SuperGrape(TM) onto the board. The SuperGrape(TM) immediately destroys all pawns on a color of my choosing.

No, it doesn't work that way.

Come on! Why do they want to release things so early?! There is a difference between pissing people off, and really really pissing people off!

Erm, not quite. They set a date for November 9th based on a conversation much like this in June.

"Well, we can't get it to retailers any later than the second week of November. It may sell-out, there might be shortages, and we want the retailers to be able to sell it at full price for a few weeks before needing to bundle it with a calendar or a CD for Black Friday."

"Well, looks like Nov. 9th is it."

    "Can we do that?"

"Well, shipping from the manufacturers will take about a week, so that puts us at Nov. 2. The actual manufacturer will need about 2 weeks to press the games and package them. We'll need two weeks before that to get review copies to the game magazines and finish the instruction manual. So that means we have to go gold no later than October 1st."

"So that gives us about 4 months to test?"

"Yeah... That should be enough right?"

    "Sure"

    ****

Fast forward to a couple months later and Halo is done ahead of this deadline. By this time, everyone knows it comes out November 9th, and they've paid major bucks to buy ads from 10/15 to 12/20. They can still run the ads but they could change the date, should be easy enough.

What's not easy is setting a date that's too early before the game is done. But now it is, so it's OK to wait a couple of weeks.

This is all a bit misleading.

First off, it is the record label's fault that they are in this current position. They were the ones that were selling CDs with 3 good songs for $19.99, they were the ones pushing crap into radios and record stores, they were the ones that ignored online distribution for years, they were the ones bilking artists. No consumer is thinking "Aww, poor record labels." That's like an attorney pleading for help. Or a spammer. Hello, record companies. You're not liked.

Second, the cost of getting music online is not $0. Besides the obvious cost of bandwidth and disk storage, there's a (really) small chance that you might get sued, and a cost of time that you spend trying to figure out which version of the song you're looking for is good... is it freiburg3.mp3? Or tocotr~1.mp3? Or FREIBURG CONSOLOE TOCOTRONIC.mp3? Then you've got the cost of quality, in that the song you're listening to isn't quite CD quality.

People are only so cot-damned used to paying "$0" because they only had two choices from 1997 onward if they wanted to listen to a song:
    • Pay $16 for the CD to listen to that song.
    • Download it.
    • Get it from a friend.
    • Wait until radio plays it.

Notice the list. There isn't a "listen to the song online free of charge for X days" option. There isn't a "download the first song off an album for $5.99, then all other songs for $4.00 more anytime thereafter" - there isn't a "get access to all songs by the label for $6/m".
