I'm all for this and have little problem with the so called "privacy issues", provided that the laws (and the devices) are designed properly to minimize any risk of tampered and/or missing evidence. I see much more privacy issues without this than with this, and I would also like to extend these laws to require private security firms to use this and tougher laws to deal with so called "missing tapes"/"broken camera" issues to protect the rights of civilians.
Only fear that I have is that the "missing footage" type of stuff will be allowed to continue, as it is nowdays with security cameras and complaints against security guards or police (the latter not being much of an issue here in Finland, but in many countries it's different).
There should be serious investigations if a complaint is made and a camera, which is OK for most of the time, but conveniently doesn't happen to have the recording at the time of the incident the complaint is about - and serious consequences to those who have access to these things. Private security firms should in no case have more leeway than police has, but that is unfortunately not always the case:(
It's a *kernel parameter* to enable debug log printing, not "some legacy cruft" that's been deprecated or supported for whatever (er, what backwards compatibility would it preserve? Kernel developers would change it if they would think there were any good reasons for *debug* *kernel* *parameter* to enable debug printing).
systemd is outside kernel, but it is launched by kernel and as such the developers can pass parameters to it only via kernel command line - However there is specifically a method meant for this: Linux kernel passes parameters it doesn't understand to other programs and ignores them. To enable systemd debug log you should use something like systemd.debug instead. There's no fricking way that outside kernel code, that is *user space application* should ever be able to dictate over standardized kernel design. That's just stupid, and any system started by kernel could potentially start using known parameters for their own purposes that differ from the kernel's, and it would be right for the kernel developers to deprecate that parameter - which would be really confusing to users anyway, kernel documentation saying one thing and some non-kernel stuff saying other...
Considering you have no problem using proprietary software, why were you using nouveau and not the official but sadly not open nVidia driver? I have since 2002, back then you could not just pull them from repository... But they've always worked for me.
\o. It's the best system available for my preferences AFAIK. I have several systems, ranging from netbook to servers and I've used linux as internet server (HTTP,SSH), LAN (samba, vnc,X,etc.), gaming (though mostly via wine, dosbox or some console/oldtech emulator), multimedia/entertainment system, etc... you name it.
Agreed, totally - but the whole conversation here shows perfectly why the certain type of nerds are so hard to entertain. Arrogant, all-knowing and lacking the means to enjoy and not take things so seriously, they could be called Sheldon Cooperists.
Of course, the universal translator deals with simpler versions of this every week. The premise is that the translator can deal with simpler symbolic translation of words from direct context, but can't deal with the deeper metaphore-based communications. For a popular mass media show, that's a pretty subtle idea. If you're going to quibble about that, you shouldn't bother watching anything on TV - none of it stands up to really deep digging, because they're trying to tell entertaining stories to normal people in 44 minutes (or 22 minutes), not publish defensible scientific thesis.:-)
This... It's always fun to ponder and speculate on how something could be possible in a world of TV show X, or even criticize them, but sometimes I think people take these things way too seriously - like letting relatively minor issues (really, they are minor now matter how big they feel to some - it is just entertainment after all) spoil the whole episode for them.
Sorry to see that a "sceptical" denialist of some sort seems to have modded you as troll... Too bad I already used all my mod points on another subject...
I recall a study where it was found that people who were optimistic and believed that they will overcome cancer were significantly more likely to do so than those who had given up and at most believed that the treatment might give them some more time.
Now this wasn't about placebo effect and I'm certainly not suggesting placebo as cancer treatment or giving up proper treatment if you feel positive enough that you'll "get over it anyway";) Just wanted to point this out after seeing so many posts where placebo is attributed having effect only for "sickness of mind" (like depression, etc.) or how good/bad you feel (ie. making you feel better even though your still just as close to death). It feels obvious to me (yes, I know this should not be a substitute for scientific facts) that your mind is connected to your immune system and can effects on it. I guess I'm only saying that this should be taken into account when considering placebo effect also - and most certainly in actual treatment for serious illness (ie. insisting that you're most likely gonna die can be detrimental to your chances of getting better).
"He pointed out that the KGB had a file on Putin long before he became the glorious leader which included a personality profile. The KGB had determined that Putin had an unusually low sense of danger, the kind of guy that thinks he can get away with just about anything, and that might include launching a nuclear first strike against America." [citation needed]
You're missing the point. If you decide to let a madman wipe off half the planet, he will, and nomatter how much you hate your country or try to satisfy him he's going to do it, unless you say "if you hit me I'll hit you back", then no nukes get fired, because you *ghasp* stood up for yorself and the only thing bullies understand is strength.
Bullies understand almost only strength, politicians understand strength, but you were talking about madman - need I elaborate on what they might or might not understand?
All told the whole thing is pretty sad. And before someone talks about the evil corporations, lets get something straight... look around the country in more business friendly areas. Take texas or South Dakota or either of the Carolinas... how much of this police buying are we seeing there? Not much. So California is where we're seeing this now.
Why of why would that be?
Since I've only read about this one case, please share the information if there is more of this happening.
I'm not claiming it's for everybody but in Finland I used to bike to school (and I still bike around, summers and winters, raining or shining) and having biked under all of above situations I can say that they hardly make bicycles unusable.
Oh phlueez, I've had similiar tab counts for several (>=5) years now and it hasn't been a problem, though nowdays it does help to be selective about domains you allow scripts from.
Interesting (not). I disagree with GP on many things, most having to do with VNC as I've used (Tight)VNC for many purposes and have achieved nearly same level of usability over 256K line as I have locally (not for any kind of animated/video context like games, video, etc. but for browsing web for articles, email, coding, etc.) but I also use X forwarding for several reasons and all I can see in your post is a counter argument that isn't and never has been a thing. It's just foul mannered nothing not worth the time I wasted on replying and I'm currently ass-whipping myself for it.
what we have is a choice of kang or kodos. either way, we lose.
and no, voting 3rd party is a non-starter. don't even go there.
So you vote for something you don't believe in, something that you call losing? Or you don't vote at all (better than the former option if you ask me)?
Let me ask you, in the fictional situation that you would actually find yourself in the imaginary scene in Simpsons, would you vote for Kang or would you vote for Kodos? Coz voting for 3rd party is absolutely a non-starter.
I'll leave it for others to figure out why, out of these four choices (of which the first two seem to be the same), voting for 3rd party is indeed the only sane option here (with possibility of choosing not to vote being less insane than voting for ass-poundings for everyone).

Why is there a baby wearing what seems to be an octopussy costume?
Aye, personally I couldn't respect the person who would use that statement on me.
Your ancestors were primadonnas who couldn't make it here so they bravely ran away, and it shows in you.

Not that I doubt that could very well possible...
