    GSM and CDMA are fine for making phone calls. If Verizon had 4G, they could offer regular internet service faster than many LECs and cable companies are able/willing to offer.

    Oh, the war will be won. It will be one by the carriers and hardware manufacturers and lost by the consumers. The market for people who want control of the software on their devices is simply too small.

    If people find out that they can get service without paying, there will be a multitude of freeloaders. It is not the fear a a freeloader, it is the certainty of many freeloaders.

    I think most libertarians would be happy to vote to have their taxes support a fire department. Maybe the actual operations would be contracted to a private organization, but that is not the issue here.

    What you are imagining libertarian means is really anarchist.

    If the voters in a democracy are dumb enough to have the police department operate that way, that is what they would get. Remember, this is a democracy. The people decided not to have a fire department and to instead contract on an individual basis.

    There is one problem - being the neighbor of the guy who didn't pay. Now your house is more likely to catch on fire.

    If you are on vacation and his house catches on fire, he probably will not even bother to call.

    I can see why they don't want to get embroiled in any of the legal stuff associated with the Internet. While it does have non-infringing uses, I can see a company like Apple just deciding they don't want to risk the legal actions which could result.

    Yes, but corporations donate money to campaigns and most voters are easily swayed by slick ads.

    I'm continually surprised how many /.ers are really right wing, pro-corporate, anti-union, anti-tax freeloaders. 40 years of "government is bad" has become a lifestyle for a lot of people here.

    They are right-wing, anti-union, anti-high-tax citizens. The left wing faction unfairly tacks on "pro-corporate" and "anti-tax freeloaders" to demonize them.

    The proper course of action would be for the original owner to file charges and attempt to get a court order to get the address.

    The company is refusing, as it should, to provide private information without a court order.

    Firefox, Opera & Chrome have been around for quite a while and they all have been eating IE's lunch.
