    There's only one solution to this problem. Linus should add a service to the kernel, so that he's contacted each time a Linux machine boots up. It should provide some info on the hardware...uhhh...maybe some info what kinda music the user likes to listen to...uhhh...what software is installed on the machine...uhhh...well, you know what I mean. I guess noone has ever did this before? ;-)

    It depends. PHP 5 will be a step forward for OO developers. We are working on a UML module for PHP (4 at the moment) here, and I think the differences are noticable (and are causing us a couple of problem in areas like PHP parsing).

    We are working on a GPLed chess app at the moment, where most of the chess moves are implemented as bitoperations on 64-bit longs. The code is written in Java and we cannot wait to see the code working on a 64-bit chip with a JIT that was optimized for that chip.

    I agree. It would be nice to have better tools to work on OSS via P2P networking. I think, there was a project to link several ArgoUML instances via P2P, you I haven't heard much about it recently.

    I'm trying to write a Java chess app just for fun to see if I can do it and if Java is actually a limiting factor in the project. So far I'm very impressed with the Java performance. Definititely no show-stopper even in such a performance-critical field.

    I've started working on a Java chess program and found Java surprisingly fast so far. Even without much optimizations (no time yet). My bigger problem is graphics part so far (animation + repaint nightmares at the moment :-( ).

    Don't be so negative about Argo. I've used (and still use it) for several projects. Work on several modules to generate and import PHP and SQL. I've used other tools like Together and still return to Argo everytime.

    There should be a bootable version of JOS already (jos.org) and there's also a Java OS from Sun. QNX should run on PCs, too.

    Most PHP and MySQL shops are not into OOP that much (I did *not* say all).

    At the moment, I'm just interested in one pilot customer for such a product, and I think I have one...

    There is not much info out there on non-OO UML diagrams besides ER diagrams.

    The OMG papers on data modelling are great. I just had the problem, that all my PDF readers lose most of the images! But I could reproduce most of the info, I guess..

    The industry ignores those who think OOP is a pile of tangled, rigid, bloat-producing hype-crap and don't want to use it. Too bad there is not a publisher which specializes in closet OOP haters. (Well, I am certianly not in the closet on that one :-)

    I think the word has to be spread bottom up. Don't wait until IBM tells you, how to do it right. The latest data modelling paper is from May and it's good enough so I could start a model for a auction site. I want to create SQL plugin for ArgoUML to generate code for it.     Just want to mention ArgoUML, a Opensource UML tool. Then I wanted to ask, if anyone of you has already worked with UML in combination with PHP and MySQL. I've just started modelling my database along the UML profile for data modelling and like it so far. I hope to generate some code from it, but there are still quite a few sources to write...

    Thanks for the link, but that was not what I had in mind. The trading site would let the copyright at the original author and the other site I'm working on needs a job posted, before any work is done. But the asynchrony site looks really interesting, although most jobs seem to be rather dead?

    I'd go one step further and recommend to share or trade your skills. If you can find a few people with complementary skills, you might be able to start something on your own. See your labor as the poor man's VC. I've had the idea to start a clearing station for IT-related work, but the project is currently stalled (time constraints). Sort of barter system for freelancers.

    I wondered that a while ago and searched Sourceforge and Freshmeat. Found 2 projects. Couldn't compile the 1st one (some libs didn't fit, although I installed them according to the readme) and the 2nd one was a demo at best. Sort of table with no background, 2 flippers, that moved at about 1 Pixel/sec and a ball that barely moved. The guy asked for patches , but I had no time yet to study the code. I'd love to see Pinball fantasies on Linux...

    You could get the sources from Sun and compile the JDK on your own. I'd also prefer something like ORP + the Classpath libs, but unfortunately there are not there at the moment... :-(

    Sorry, but I think you didn't really understood my comment. When I was in school, we discussed all these problems and I recall that there were plans presented, that would eliminate starvation on this planet for about 20 billion US $. That's long ago, but I'm sure 40 billion would be enough these days. It's hard to say if it would actually work, but there are projects that feed a lot of people for a lot less.
    Look at the funding of a very successful organisation (in my eyes).
    It has helped 1.7 Million people so far and they don't starve for 20 years now! So it's not a one-day solution.
