I've had almost the exact same experience on my Dell mini 9, tried XP, ubuntu, Xubuntu, OSX and a host of other lightweight linux distros and still found Win7 to be easily the best.

Calling OSX a "lightweight OS" on the Mini 9? I smell troll.

Never seen OS X on a Mini 9? (http://tinyurl.com/c8j597) Or are you just misinterpreting the author and assuming that every OS mentioned was a "lightweight OS"?

One important aspect in your post I see is the difference in age, you will not understand her views and it's useless to try. What you can do is sit back and provide useful real-world applicable knowledge and let her figure it all out. It's what she is good at, but if it's not what she loves....then it's all water under the bridge. Best of luck.

Yea there is a good reason, all the flaws that the dell image had. First off, it would not see all 16GB of the SSD, only 3.4GB. Talked to tech support for hours and they confirmed this is a problem they have had with other customers but the only resolution is they would send me a discounted external CD drive to wipe their image. Another issue I had was when I wanted to try out the 8.10 build I couldn't even load it from terminal with update-manager -d because they had a custom update manager that would only search for new updates....not developer updates. In the end I was all too happy to get that POS OS off my laptop and get true ubuntu on there. It's working great now.

I suggest you give it a try. I wiped the 8.04 Dell version of Ubuntu that came with my Mini last night and when I reinstalled my own image of 8.04 the wireless card wouldnt work. I connected it to my home connection and upgraded to 8.10 and it worked right away and saw all connections within range.
    Hope this helps.

Just wondering where these price speculations came out of as I purchased my mini 9 for $486 shipped, and that was the upgraded model with 16GB SSD, and 1GB RAM. I got Ubuntu on it (saves you $50 too btw) and I use it for school. I don't bother taking the power cord with me as the battery lasts for 5 hours.

Gitlow v. NY (1923) - Socialist writes the "left-wing Manifesto" where he calls for the overthrow of American govt. by class action strikes. Convicted under NY anarchy law and upheld in supreme court stating that free speech did have limitations. Texas v. Johnson (1989) - Gregory Lee Johnson burns the American Flag at Rep. State convention in Dallas. Convicted under state statute and overturned in supreme court as flag burning is seen as symbolic speech and therefore allowed. These are just two crucial examples in American history where symbols or writings were either ruled constitutional or uncon*. There are laws against it but it's still up to the discretion of the supreme court at this point. I am definitely interested in seeing if this issue rises higher.
