...if plausibility was a major factor in it's ranking. Think about it, wouldn't employers love to use DNA testing to see if you would be a good employee? Employers can interview people in person to see what they are like but the result is just an opinion saying if the person would work well at the company. DNA testing gives you cold hard numbers though. These numbers may not represent your actual abilities but that won't stop employers from using them. Why? Employers like numbers and statistics. When employers are dealing with a 1000 employees, statistical averages is the only way employers can understand what everyone is doing, they can't look at every individual employee. Employers can say "99% of our employees have the XYZ genome sequence which means they are great workers." as oppose to "Our hiring staff only hires the best people, even though they all have different opinions about what is the best and would rather hire someone because they are fans of the same sports teams instead of actually knowing how to program...".
Remember, you're not a person when you walk into a corporation, you're a "human resource".
Sure, Star Wars is just like the American Revolution. The Americans were rebels fighting against the opressive Britans for their freedom. The reality of it is that we were rebeling against our own government. That would be like Americans now a days taking up arms and fighting against our own military and president Bush.
If the Britans had won that war do you think it would still be called the American revolution? I think it would go down in history more like The quelling of political extremists, where Britain had to restore peace to it's original form.
What about Star Wars? What if the "dark side" killed off the rebels? They would be restoring peace to the way it was before the rebel uprising. Everything's relative.
If this patent really is ridiculous, then why not take them to court? It may cost you some money at first, but if you win you can counter sue them. Then you can use that money you get from the counter lawsuit to cover all your previous legal fees. Unless someone stands up to these people they will keep suing companies and getting more and more powerful from doing so.
Corporations == political power. The more corporations that adopt Linux and OSS, the less likely OSS will have any laws put against it. If many large corps invest in OSS for all their systems, do you think they are going to let any laws get passed that prevent them from continuing to it? If Linux/OSS can push itself into large corporations, then OSS will be buying itself political power.

All their purchases are made electronically so that has to be the most accurate tracking of books sold. Ok, obviously amazon.com only tracks the books they sell which is slightly different than the article which talks about all book sales. But amazon.com has enough customers to make an accurate random sampling of the entire set of customers who buy books.

What's the best way for a software company to boost their liquid assets? Start pressing out more cd's. Each cd of, let's say, Microsoft Small Business server costs around 1800$. The actual cd costs about 5 cents. So if MS wanted to increase their liquid assets they just print out a couple 100,000 of these cd's and tack it onto their total worth. Then their investors will stay happy knowing the company their money is in is worth a zillion dollars.
How do you think people in the US would respond to a national firewall to protect from outside attacks? Would people view it has a means to control the internet content? Or a valid and necessary element in our nation?
Depends if we are attacked. After Sep. 11 people found surveillance cameras, wire tapping, packet sniffing, etc to be much more acceptable. I bet if China really did "cyber-attack" us, the government (along with the media) would hype it up as much as possible. Resulting in more funding for our national security agencies and more control over our information.

Most people fill out registrations with BS, I know I do. With the ones that require and email I use a temporary email account. Once I get the registration, I delete the email account. No spam thank you.
Then there's the software itself. Time limited trials are no good. Most people won't get too involved with the software if they know it's going to suddenly stop working one day. Either offer a slimmed down version with no time limit, or a slimmed down version with no time limit and a full version with a time limit so the user has a choice. You might be suprised at what most people are going to choose.
We need websites, like googles Directory, that shows all the webpages out there that are in a certain category. For example, bookstores. Buyers not only see amazon.com but they can see all the other bookstores out there too.
I think when people do a search for something in google, google should not only return links to webpages, but also links to directories on their site that contain other sites that are not very popular yet.
When MS integrates as many feature as possible into Windows it makes Windows slow down more and more each version. So by letting MS continue this, people will have to buy faster and faster processors with every version of Windows which means more AMD processors sold.
By the time Windows 3000 comes out everyone will need a multi-processor system. One processor for notepad, one for the desktop. AMD will make a killing!
Mail this to CNN or some other news site that most Americans read. If the general public learns about this then there will be an outrage and changes may be made to the patent office. Any complaints slashdotters send in is only a fraction of a percent of the number of Americans out there.
