  1. Re:More communication != more accountability. on White House Joins Facebook, MySpace, Twitter · · Score: 4, Insightful

If the Whitehouse is putting more down in writing, on the Internet where it can easily be archived and searched through, will this lead to greater scrutiny from the public? Will they be more likely to be called on their backtracking?

Or, more likely, will they just make sure to never say anything of substance?

It doesn't really matter if they're scrutinized or called on for their backtracking. There are entire TV shows (Daily Show) dedicated to pointing stuff like that out. I remember watching an episode where they were talking about the bailouts and showing footage of congressmen talking about how good the bailouts were going to be and then cutting to another clip of the same person talking about how much they were against the bailouts and never supported them to begin with. People chuckle about it, but no one really cares. Its sad that it turned out like that, but short of forcing open revolt and exile, I don't know what can be done. Chances are the next bunch would be just as bad as the current, if not worse.

When I first read about this, I thought it was going to be some sort of spiritual successor to the original game, kind of side stepping Deus Ex 2. At least, thats what I hoped for. After watching the trailer, generic one liners and B movie plot is I suspect the entirety of it going play out to be. I'm not saying that they didn't put a lot of effort into it, but its sounds like it was a case of diminishing returns. I'll still download it and play, but I don't have high hopes.

At the risk of being horribly mistaken, I'm going to assume you're not flamebait and simply misinformed. I think that MrEricSir was attempting to crack a joke at the fact that "synergy" (or in this case, the pluralization, "synergies") was an incredibly overused buzzword that marketing types often times threw into a presentation with little to no regard to the actual meaning of the word just because it sounds intelligent (to them). I do not believe that he is trying to claim that the word is completely meaningless or not a real word; quite the contrary. I feel that it was his intention to say that others have taken the word and turned it into meaningless filler. I do not understand the analogy with the bytecode comment. To me, this is more like Hollywood saying something along the lines of, "I'll create a GUI interface in Visual Basic, see if I can track an IP address".

Okay, I skimmed TFA. I still don't understand how this has even a 10% margin of success. Speaking in regards to myself, if I was doing anything that warranted the FBI singling me out that I was aware of, I would be much more paranoid than I currently am about going to strange links. Especially ones sent to me from people I don't know. Especially when I use one service and the reply is trying to bait me into going to somewhere I've never heard of. Most of the time I see stuff like that on blogs that is just rampant spam. The whole thing just feels too flimsy to actually be useful. I don't see how they're giving the real story.

You'd either have to direct it specifically to the Mark, and hope that he responds, or you'd have to put it someplace so completely mainstream that hundreds of other people click on... oh, shit. The power was out when I woke up, and when it finally came back on, one of my boxes wouldn't come back up, so I pulled the power supply and took a look inside and every capacitor was blown. Later on when I was walking my dog, I noticed scorch marks all around a nearby transformer. I suppose technically that doesn't count for the numerology based anecdotal stories that are on topic, but whatever.
