It is very fitting. His most famous piece of fiction is about space.

However, I still think the coolest thing in the world would have been if this press release had compared the size of the Huygens probe to a Ford Prefect instead of a VW Beetle

On the one hand big companies and corporations are lobbying governments to lessen trade restrictions and import/export taxes so that they can benefit from cheap production costs in other countries. Then on the other hand, they add restrictions themselves so that they can still sell the items at high prices. They make sure that they benefit and not the customer.

While this is true for some sectors (look at the failure of 3G mobile phones as an example) there are definitely sectors that are experiencing, or on the verge of experiencing a boom.

They seem to be mostly multi-media related. E.g. iPod/iTunes and PVRs. The wider public is also (finally) realizing that the internet is about more than just sending emails to grandma and a bit of pr0n surfing every now and again.

I also think that the time is finally right for integrated entertainment/communication devices for the home market. PVR, VoIP, home theatre, video on demand from the net etc. all in one device, with content sharing to portable devices.

Too late. The climate change is already under way. Increased heat waves in Europe, increased hurricane frequency, thinning of ice caps, retreating glaciers. Whether or not this is due to human activity, its happening. Now.

Is this really a major climate change or just part of the normal variation in weather. We don't know. Why? We don't have enough data yet. Even in places like London, accurate weather records stretch back less than 200 years. Records of global weather are only a few decades old.

We do know for example that in the past century, average tempratues is Europe have gone up. Can we acurately predict that this trend will continue? No.

Should we try to minimise human influence on climate change? Of course.

Should we start preparing for the end of the world beacause of an immanent catastrophic change in weather? Too ealry to say.

I was just pointing out that these kinds of (scare mongering) predictions are nothing new, and I don't see any reason to give this one more credence than any of all the wrong predictions that have been made since the 70's

If I watch an episode in the middle of season 3, I don't get half the references to things that have happened already, so I don't understand what's being done in that episode.

This is the reason why the networks never really liked B5, but it's also the thing that makes B5 way cooler than any other tv series. Instead of the old "problem of the week" format of most tv series, B5 has a five year coherent story line.

I love the feeling when in (say) series 4 they reference something that happened way back in series 1. Totally mind blowing: "No way ... that was planned that three years ahead!"

From many of the previous posts it is clear that the MPAA's explanation of "human error" is bull, so here is what we do:

    1. Anyone who administrates a web/ftp site put a fairly big random file on your site that is called >.mpg or .avi or whatever.

    2. Look at the MPAA spam flowing in

    3. Wait for the stage where the majority of the MPAA's spam is sent to people who are not actually infringing.

    4. Complain to the relevant authorities.

PS It might be a good idea to put a disclaimer with the file so that people looking for movies don't eat up all your server bandwidth trying to download your random file. Even better configure you server to give an error when someone actually tries to downoad the file.

    Upgrading to Gentoo Linux 2004.2

If you already have a working installation of Gentoo Linux (Version 1.4, 2004.0, 2004.1) there is no need to reinstall. You will automatically get Gentoo 2004.2 if you sync your Portage tree and run emerge --update world. If you still have an installation with a Gentoo 1.2 profile it might make sense -- in some cases -- that you do a new installation.

There is also the possibility to update your system to a 1.4 profile from which you -- as already stated -- can easily get to Gentoo 2004.2. This update includes recompiling of glibc and some essential system packages; it will take a very long time (possibly longer as a complete re-installation) and it might also fail. So if you still have an installation with a Gentoo 1.2 profile, it's your decision whether you update or reinstall.
