  1. Save your math skills first.. on Why Do Computers Take So Long to Boot Up? · · Score: 1

Doesn't something seem wrong when you come up with one person doing 31 _million_ jumping jacks a year while windows is booting?

If I tried to do 113 jumping jacks a second for an entire year, I think waiting for windows to boot would be the lessor of two health crises.

    For better math, how about 113 (jumping jacks/reboot) * 365 (days/year)* 2 (reboots/day)?

Ultimately, the stopping force of a car is limited by the frictional force of the tires against the pavement. A car with cheap tires will take longer to stop than a car with sticky race tires. Same thing for dry conditions vs. rain or snow.

Since the tires are the limiting factor, we want to maximize them, so the static friction of a rolling tire is needed. We don't care about the brakes sliding - they don't apply the force to the pavement!

Do you really think mil stuff is built for comfort?

And that the performance couldn't be as good as commercial stuff? A lot of your engines are shared between commercial and military use. See how many commerical cargo planes used the same J56 engines the C-130 series uses.

Military items are designed for durability and reliability. Most military engines, be they land or aircraft, are derated by about half to make sure it doesn't break when inhaling desert sand, heavy rain, and small animals. The J130, designed for about 6,000 shaft HP, is rated at 4,000 on the C-130.

Noise reduction on jets has costs, in efficiency and performance. Your cushy ride in a civvy humvee is because you don't need the stiffness to keep stable when firing .50" machine guns or TOW missiles off the back. That soft stuff (larger rubber bushings, etc) doesn't wear so well under hard offroad use, either.

Milspec works to a completely different design agenda. Every requirement is asked, "how does this support the war function?"

They're hooking up sets of the batteries in series to increase voltage. In series, the Wh don't add, they stay the same. So, maybe they're hooking up 8 sets of 850 batteries to get 50 kWh @ 12V each = 96V total pack voltage.

First off, unless you were trying out a pun, it's a _brake_ job.

And Midas will never replace any regenerative brakes. The regenerative brake is also known as the electric motor - you're just using the drivetrain to run it as a generator.

If anything, regenerative braking _saves_ the brake pads since they aren't being used as often.

  19. Racing burns gas like crazy on Tzero Electric Car: 0-60 in 3.7 Seconds · · Score: 1

Please tell me how I can get anywhere close to 27 mpg doing the kind of driving they were doing. When I autocross, speeds ranging 15-60mph, I'm probably getting 15-20mpg. Road racing brings it to about 10 mpg (this is a V6 Firebird) with speed ranging from 40-100mph on the course.

Let's do the math for the 250 mile drive, assuming it used all 50 kW-h of juice. Conversions are from http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/unitsindex.html

    50kW-h x 3,412 BTU/kW-h = 170,600 BTU
    1 gal gas = 124,000 BTU

So, 250 miles on 1.37 gal gas = 181 mpg. Not too shabby, eh?

Having been up and down Mt. Washington, including a trip in our college's solar-electric car, I'm not sure that the Segway could make it down safely.

With no brakes and only a small battery pack to soak up regenerative braking, I'm fairly sure a trip back down the mountain would result in the scooter being reduced to a smoky, overheated ruin without very frequent stops with enough time to let it cool down.

Our solar car, with six car batteries hooked up in series, still got kind of warm even though we weren't near the car's full range. $0.25 worth of electricity on the way up, gained back $0.15 on the trip down with the regen brakes. Figure at least a nickel's worth of heat generation in the batteries and electrics on the trip down..

I think it's safe to say he packed the scooter into the back of the Beetle clown car for the trip back..
