Looking it over, since I haven't adjusted that in forever, my Sound screen on the alarm edit shows None, then a Custom section, then the Standard section (Just like Settings, Sounds, Ringtones). My custom section has songs which I've added as ringtones. Not ideal as adding music from your device I agree but not too difficult either if you know of just a few songs you want.
You can do a quick search how to make any song a ringtone legally and free using iTunes.
Where in the story does it say these sites optimized away from flash solely for the iPad?
Given the large number of pre-orders for the iPad I'd say it has quite a large influence on website design, even if it was already headed in that direction.
Ask yourself, would the transition happen as quickly w/o Apple's influence, if at all? So it does have something to do with the iPad and part of that is Apples overall stance against Flash.
"This has nothing to do with the iPad." "I'm not saying that having more systems that don't support Flash will not be a factor in the decision regarding what technology will be used on a website"
Perhaps for mirroring video out? I have a JB phone and video out cables and the look of the screen blown up to projector size just isn't very clear or pretty. Having more resolution for presentations and teaching and whatnot would be welcomed. Apple could make inroads into numerous organizations, including schools, if their presentation package was beefed up some with dedicated ppt type programs and a more robust video out.
While nice, I'd really like it to monitor my circuit breaker box so I can see where the energy is being used per circuit and adjust accordingly. Perhaps my Fridge is using a lot more than normal or more than the avg, send me an alert that it may need a service call or time to replace. Water heater, AC, etc. Are the lights being left on in the kid's rooms overly long or are my outside lights staying on too long, how much is that tv usage costing me, etc.
More of a smart home, than just a smart meter for overall usage where it could be difficult to pin down changing usage.

My Samsung BR player plays YouTube, Pandora, Netflix, and Blockbuster on Demand. It was under $100 new. It even has a couple USB ports which I understand that in other countries software can play Divx.
If it had Hulu it would be perfect, so for now we hook up the laptop to the TV when needed.
I don't need the internet on my TV, just a few web based services like those listed. With the Wii getting Netflix this summer, all we'd need it to do is support a little more recent flash to be comparable. These types of boxes shouldn't be any surprise as they are the next set top device.
"Oh, I dunno, could be the potentially voided warranty on a $600 item."
FUD. iTunes has a real simple setting called RESTORE.
"Or maybe it's Apple's habit of bricking jailbroken phones with updates?"
Then don't update? The only bricking I've heard about was people updating to 3.1.3 on un-jailbroken iPhones! If you've jailbroken at all you know that every time a new update comes out they tell you not to update until there is another way to JB it.
The amount of FUD in this article and these comments is amazing.
I remember a Star Trek episode about this once. Enterprise kept accelerating out of control, something about locked inducer coils or something. So they ejected the core (or threatened to?).
So that's what we need, a button to eject the engine.
"(on which he basically gives up, for the perfectly decent reason of not wanting to jailbreak his iPhone)"
You know how a non-jailbroken iPhone works and looks like after being jailbroken? Exactly the same. So instead of this app store you go to this other app store. Only difference. I really wonder why some are so afraid of doing something so simple.
Our county assessors office has been taking individual pics of each house over the past decade (varying quality). When you go into their site to check your property taxes and such they have them all posted. Having a sliding scale for time would be a very interesting archival solution.
"It can't even be used as a proper web browsing machine given that amount of sites that are to a greater or lesser extent powered by flash."
Gizmodo just had an article about this particular subject. In reference to web-browsing (not video), name a site that you frequent that would be hampered by a non-flash based tablet. The list will be very small, not 0 of course, but very small.
The kicker being you can use it though to shoot at their equipment. Oops, missed their backpack/satchel/gun/etc.
A republic setup definitely has it's problems but for now it's the best system we have.

Disagree with yourself much?
Hmm, my 3GS does have the ability to play music for the alarm with the standard clock app. You are incorrect.
I only ever have one hand on the wheel! The other is on the gear shift or the armrest, like most people.
Yeah, because all of nerdom hates The Black Knight.
"for the glory of the republic"
Hmm, I'm thinking the republic would have issues with the soldiers actions and then vote/act accordingly. That's why it works.

Yeah, I'd rather have circuit by circuit monitoring. That way you have the big items with their own usage chart.

Cant you just turn your JB'd iPhone into a WiFi hotspot using one of the many apps out there?
Connect iPad to iPhone wifi network,
done.

"Consistency does"
Changing the windows control to being over the menu is not going to help either. That's bad UI.
Another reason why Linux Mint is doing well in those circles. It's visual appeal is broad and it has a very clean look.
It must be nice to think they make so many people happy by just saying their name over and over.
