Boy, this is going to be a tough discussion. I wonder how many mod-points are going to be spent labeling items "flamebait" for talking about Windows vs. Linux vs. Mac..

Anyway, I think Acer I got for my wife is the worst. I also recently purchased an HP, and it actually got a lot better in terms of less crapware. I was very surprised, although Vista disappeared ten minutes after I got it out of the box and Windows 7 magically appeared later..

Any geek worth his salt gets rid of the current OS installation anyway and installs their flavour of choice anyway :)

Well, the problem is that none of us have the insight into the exact city requirements so we can understand their exact SLA or how much of a high availability they actually need, but I would imagine it would need to be pretty good at the least, and that's why this decision with Google surprises me. I haven't seen pretty good yet, and I was just referencing major outages. There have been more minor ones as well. When I get home tonight I'll pull what SLA Google thought they could uphold, and it's not near where it needs to be for a pretty general business requirement that requires a decent amount of high availability. I want Google to succeed in the apps market, but there are certain things they aren't meeting yet. I've done a lot of studying of clouds in the past few months and I'd be happy to share my research when I get a hold of it.

Umm...the GovCloud is running the same software as standard gmail, no? The outages have been from issues within the gmail code (issues with the contacts plugin, issues with new mailbox code) as well as standard routing issues (I believe it was a core switch that had a bad route at one point), not from the amount of users. I think it was a DOS and a number of users issue once out of all of those. Having this segregated from Gmail isn't going to make as much of a difference as you think it's going to.

  6. Gmail is not ready. on Los Angeles Goes Google Apps With Microsoft Cash · · Score: 2, Interesting

In a word, no, Google mail is not ready for primetime. They are not able to meet the SLA's required for a business, especially government work where the email system needs to be readily available. I would assume there is some extent of document management involved here, and if that's the case what happens when gmail goes down? I know government tends to move slowly, but this could seriously interrupt procedures - what if cases weren't tried in due time? Businesses and government use email for more than just simple communication, it could also be a sign-off step in a procedure's workflow, and breaking that is often a big problem.

In 2009 Gmail was down in February and then in September, and I believe there was at least once more occurence this year as well. In 2008 Google was down in July, three times in August, and once in October. If I ran a business and my email was completely down to this extent I would fire my Exchange team.

Sure Google gives you 15 days free when the service is unavailable for a period of time, but that doesn't really help now does it?

Yes, but you don't have the flexibility and the elasticity of resources, billing for your exact usage, and the ability to rapid provision. Though you do have a cost for technicians to maintain and know every aspect of your data center, which is something that's built into the cloud model. Clouds are great for companies that don't want to hire and pay for that expertise, or the totally redundant internal infrastructure. You said it yourself; your network. I'm a systems engineer too and I have "my network" as well, but I can still see where there is some definitive value in a cloud, even more than an ISP or SaaS offering (although SaaS and cloud can go hand in hand). Trust me, I'm worth my salt, and I know I and every other engineer need to understand this technology's good points and bad points. There's definitely something there with the offerings, the economies of scale, and the service levels. See my point?

  11. Re:A Little Disappointed on Amazon Cloud Adds Hosted MySQL · · Score: 3, Insightful

For a first step, MySQL was the obvious choice and it shows a move in the right direction.

I do enjoy how everyone is trying to beat down Cloud Computing. It's basically a new technology, and just like every other new technology there are going to be bugs and issues that affect SLA right away. If you are putting all your eggs in the Cloud basket, it's the same as using that brand new bleeding-edge Cisco product or virtualization platform. You have to expect some pain until they hone the "technology".

Sure there's no good overall definition, and it's become kind of a joke in certain circles, but there are some solid ideas behind clouds. Sometimes I think it's because engineers are more worried about their jobs five years from now, because if clouds do catch on their jobs will be in jeopardy.

I probably should have clarified a bit so it made a little more sense, I wanted to keep my post fairly short and concise but I can see that I didn't get my point across very well as I re-read it and see the responses.

Most of my friends (and some of hers) are geeks, and many of them talk about technology and have Netbooks. I should have specified that if she heard from geeky people that Android wasn't great, or tried one of their laptops, it wouldn't be a good thing at all. The old adage that there's no bad press doesn't apply in this situation, and my example was a microcosm of community and the way bad tech press travels in many circles, especially with Android advertising so heavily in the mainstream. And don't even get me started on how other companies could twist this around and use this to give Android a black eye.

When I talked about Android getting their act in gear it was twofold; if they are going to try and be viable on a laptop now's not the time to start that unless they can do it right immediately (not sure if this is even on their roadmap), and it was also about squashing this kind of bullshit that Acer is doing! This is not the time!

Android is in a very precarious situation right now - the last thing they need as they hit the mainstream is a black eye. I'm all for Android and Google. Great products and strong competition advance products and makes things better for all of us! Please, please make an iPhone killer; it will either make my next iPhone that much better or I will have an Android phone next.

  13. Re:People rarely try twice on Android / Windows 7 Dual Boot Netbook Disappoints · · Score: 5, Interesting

This makes me very sad. It seems lately with all of the press of Android that's being aimed at the "typical" (read: non-geek) crowd (especially that Droid commercial against iPhones), usability like this is extremely bad. My wife, a total non-geek, knows what Droid and the Android OS is because she found the commercial interesting. If she tried Android out on a Netbook and had a bad experience she wouldn't ever try it again.

I've had a hard enough time getting her to use an iPod touch and now she loves it, but believe it or not she is doing INCREDIBLE with Windows 7 with little to no help from me, right off the bat. She actually said it was intuitive, and she is not a computer person in the least.

Android needs to get their act in gear quickly, especially if they are going after main-stream, non-geek people, as these people won't be coming back anytime soon, no matter how much their geek husbands beg.
