  1. What is with Wired? on The Nation of Macintosh? · · Score: 2

I think its great that Wired runs a lot of mac articles, but in the past issues you would think that Macs have a 50% marketshare or something. IMHO, they give way too much press to any mac users who do something "unusual. " I think Apple makes good hardware, but that doesn't mean I'm going to worship a company. Not only do many mac users worship Apple, but it seems that Wired does as well.

Linux, like any monolithic kernel, gives complete privilege to drivers (including those for wireless networking devices), allowing them to crash the system at will. I suggest you invest in some cough drops.

Well if that were the case, why is Linux so damn stable? I have 2 systems running beta and expirmental wireless and firewire drivers that have never crashed. In my experience with Linux, drivers are sometimes a pain in the ass to get working, but once they are working they don't crash.

Here's a little experiment, go to any Mac forum and read up on hardware/software bugs, you'll find that 70% of them have been due to poorly designed third party software. Jobs may be greedy, but he also wants you have to the best, most reliable software out there.

See this is the problem with Mac fanboys is they take PR as fact. Steve Jobs doesn't care about software reliability, he cares about make profits. I'm not trying to put him down, because making profits is exactly what he should be doing. Mac's could use "commodity hardware" stably, but that would cannibalize their own hardware business. Why spend money supporting drivers from other hardware companies? So instead they give preference to their own hardware, which they should because Apple is a hardware company. Its not about stability, its about profits, which is not bad thing, but I'm sick of Apple fanboys thinking that their is some mission behind the company besides profits.

    • It doesn't require a ridiculous amount of drivers in order to work. Anything I've bought from creative recently has had the most bloated drivers I've ever seen. The default install of the Audigy installs 100 megs of crap but the worst part is you can't download the new drivers without having the fscking CD!!
    • Is there any reason why this cannot have OGG support? Instead if just trying to mimic the competition why not try to differentiate yourself with additional features? No a crappy FM tuner is not going to cut it..
    • Will this work with other software or will I be locked in to using playcenter?
    • How is creative as far as returns and warranty? When my ipod died after 8-months of use, I got a brand new one 3 days later and apple even sent me a box to ship out the old one.

Right now the Music, Film and TV industries are trying to push a bill in congress that would make it illegal to use digital recorders the same way we use our VCRs. They have decided that the Supreme Court's Betamax ruling (that says taping you favorite TV shows for later viewing does not constitute copyright infringement) shouldn't apply to digital recorders.

How the hell would the Supreme courts decision regarding taping TV shows not apply to digital recorders? Does the MPAA expect there to be Supreme Court case for every format that comes out? There Supreme court would spend 1/2 its time dealing with formats: (S-VHS, DAT, MPG, Quicktime, etc.) IANAL, but I would imagine the previous decision covers the act of recording a show for later personal use and is not related to what format or media it is recorded on.

    • DVD/CDR Comno
    • Built in wireless
    • Ethernet
    • USB
    • Firewire
    • VGA out
