Right now, I purchase all my Cd's and then rip them myself for quality reasons. If people can't rip the music they buy, they will stop buying and turn to P2P as the only way to get music in the formats they need. When audiophiles can't rip the CD's they buy, this will encourage the development of a P2P service that caters to high quality music files and most importantly, the ability to download an whole album in one click.
Record companies need to figure out that they do not dictate demand, I guess they've become delusional due to their oligopic power, but sooner or later one company will figure it out and the rest will follow. The consumer wants digital music formats that trust the consumer. If the consumer does not have the ability to convert the music to different media and formats, they will not buy it.
I'm seeing it now. Hurd will be to Linux what OS/2 Warp is to Windoze.
Not Really, becuase OS/2 Warp was released well before windows 95, I think it was in the early spring of 95 if I remember correctly, while windows 95 was released in the late summer. It really shouldn't have been released because it was quite buggy. I remember returning it to EB the same week I bought it, after finding out I needed windows disks in order to run windows programs.
I could see using a tablet for specialized applications, where you would be standing while using the machine, but besides that, this tablet hype will die down real quickly even if the technology is only in its infancy. Tablets will never replace laptops for most users, because the keyboard is much more effeciant than handwriting.
Walt Mossberg had a good article about tablets in journal this morning. Personally, I think that in five years we will be laughing about "tablet hype" much in the same manner that we laugh about "thin-clients" and "push technology" today. I'm still waiting for the day when everyone uses word processors through the browser.
Frankly, I could care less for corel, they rank right up there with MS when it comes to unnecessary upgrades. I started using coreldraw about 10 years ago when version 3 came out. It was a really solid program until version 6, which seemed to be real buggy and rushed. Then corel started pushing upgrades out every year, which out any real value, but you were forced to get it in order to be compatible with clients. They really blew a big opportunity with version 7, which Photopaint was ranked higher than latest photoshop offering at the time by just about every magazine.
The other reason i hate Corel is they buy really good products and ruin them. A good example is Fractal Painter, which is a really cool product, tons of features. The best part was the integration with tablets. Corel bought painter and it has fallen in to obscurity.
Well I assume if your posting on/. you are familiar with CVS? Go to this page and grab a copy of the source. All you need to compile is the java sdk and the ant build tool.
Personally, I love my Trasmeta powered Fujitsu p-2000 lifebook. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but it packs DVD/CD Burner with firewire, usb, and everything else you would expect in one of those gigantic Inspirons, but is neatly placed in a 3.5 lb package with a small footprint. I wrote a little review here.
That being said, the idea that the "tablet revolution" is long overdue is complete BS. I haven't seen so much hype in at least five years when by now we were all suppose to be using thin client java terminals, and all content would use "push technology." Tablets are going to be great for specialized industrial applications but they are not going to replace laptops. People who think otherwise are the same people who think the Segway will be replacing the bicycle in five years.
Obviously, you don't own a Fujisu P-2000. With 2 batteries attached, I get 14 hours of battery life with a notebook that weighs under 4 pounds. Granted, its no speed demon, but it certainly fits anyone's definition of a mobile pc.
If the protesters around IMF had their way, there would be much more trade barriers between countries, making it much easier for corporations such as Nintendo to set different prices in different regions.
I'm all in favor of globalization, but I beleive that many of the protestors object to the way 3rd world contries are exploited such as countries in Africa with millions of people dying of starvation yet they export the majority of their food.
Maybe. Does anyone else remember IBM OS/2? Excellent Windows compatibility was included all the way to OS/2 Warp and yet it didn't turn out to be the Windows killer.
Os/2 windows compatibility was good, but that's because you were required to have windows disks, which is something they didn't advertise for the obvious reasons. I remember installing os/2 warp and then to my amazement, the installer asked me for windows disks 1-* on the 3.5 drive, but I only had 5.25 windows disks. Needless the say, I immediatly returned 0s/2 warp and waited 6 months for windows 95.
Of all the people who are blaiming video games for just about everything these days, I haven't heard from one person who actually plays video games for leisure and thinks violent video games turn kids in to killers. Almost all of the higher-ups blaiming video games had an intern go, "Here Senator, look how evil this game is!"
What's so surprising is how shortsighted and hypocritical these people can be, because they are reacting the same exact way many politicians did to rock music in the 50's and 60's. While I don't usually agree with Mr. Gore's politics, we do share the same musical tastes, the Grateful Dead. The logic that Mr. Gore uses against video games is the same logic that was used against various types of music in the 50's and 60's. The MUSIC was blamed when the kids grew their hair, the MUSIC was to blame when kids took drugs. Now its video games and rap music that are causing violence. So if Gore or any Baby Boomer politician wants to regulate or ban video games, they should really start with a ban on the Beatles.
I currently own 2 laptops a 500mhz ti-Book and the Fujitsu p-2000, I actually prefer the p-2000. The main problem with the ti-book is it is too big. The size makes sense if its the only computer you own, but for people with a desktop and a laptop, it doesn't make much sense to go with such a large laptop. And as far as looks go, the p-2000 is just as good looking as the ti-book. Besides screen size, the p-2000 has every port and feature of the most recent high end Tibook, minus gig-e and of course the big advantage osx. But to pick up a tibook with a decent configuration, you will pay at least $3000+ while a fully loaded 3.5lb p-2000 will run you $1800. Luckily I got a free Tibook to play with from work.
If microsoft wanted ot kill apple it could have just never ported office and ie a few years ago, but MS rightfully sees Apple as an opportunity, not a threat. Also, MS would be under much more scrutiny if it wasn't for Apple.
Great idea! Lets hold up pogress on 99% of Debian installs to insure compatibility with platforms that make up a a ridiculously low amount of the installed base. It doesn't make any sense to slow x86 development in order to keep Amiga and Atari ST up to do date in the year 2002.
I was in the market for a larger flatscreen since my 4 year old Hitach superscan elite CRT was showing its age. After looking around, there was no way I was going to pay $2000 for a 21in LCD when good 21in CRT's are available on ebay for less than $300. I ended up purchasing a Sony CDP-G520P at NewEgg. Its flat. its 21in, and its silver so it will match everything else since silver seems to be dominate color these days. Whenever someone walks in to my room the first thing the comment on is the monitor. Stick with CRT unlesss you can deal with a 15in LCD.
This product would be useful if it did not require special paper. The paper requirement is going to make this a niche or early adopter product at best. What I don't understand is why all these tech companies are moving to pen based products, especially the tablet pc. By the time the technology is solid, most purchasers will be comfortable with keyboard and mice interfaces, tablet and pen computing will be relegated to specialty uses. Just go to any college computer lab. Freshmen type 50 wpm with 10 IM windows open.A large amount of the people who desire pen based products will be dead in 15 years.
How can you make the assessment that 83% of the earth is used by humans? If Billy bob manages to go to a remote Montana location to hunt, what kind of radius is used to determine the amount of area that was now used for hunting? More importantly, how would they ever know that Billy bob hunted in that particular area? I don't know how they could develop a sample size to accurately reflect global land usage for hunting and fishing without a ridiculously large amount of resources and budget. This study looks like BS to me, in fact most of these "wacky studies" featured in the mass media look like bs. I especially love "cigarette smoking increases SAT scores" and "coffee drinkers have better sex."
The stealth fighter was revealed to the general public before the gulf war, they even had a really good game that was released during or before the war.
I use to work for a printing company and anytime we had to deleiver to Javitt center, our truck driver had to to bribe at least 2 people in order to get anything unloaded within 3 hours of arrival. The union contracts also forbid drivers from doing unloading themselves. This is only one aspect of the place, I'm sure there are plenty more reasons for moving to Boston.
The main problem with Hollywood is they are no longer willing to take risks on creative projects, instead the rely on Franchise films with "proven actors" who can draw in the crowds. If the movie is not a francise film it must have a cookie cutter plot that is similar to another film that was a financial success.
Since the inception of apple.slashdot.org, anytime you post anything that is slightly negative towards, Apple, OSX, or Steve Jobs you get modded down as troll. Honestly if I had mod points, I would mark your original post overrated, because it regurgitates the same crap about Apple being a movement, and people putting you down because you have a mac, that is complete bullshit. The main problem on/. is people modding you down if you don't blindly worship apple.
Here and here I got modded -1 troll because I don't kiss Steve Jobs ass.

Where do you get 15 years? Dual Displays was available with NT 4.0.
Everytime I see Lou Dobbs on Cnn, I think of space.com. It always gives me a good chuckle..

Give PSU a break, at least Smeal is in the top 50. Ninenine probablly went to Pitt.

Well it seems that every channel is doing that these days:
What's so surprising is how shortsighted and hypocritical these people can be, because they are reacting the same exact way many politicians did to rock music in the 50's and 60's. Obivously their cat herding hasn't done much to impress investors. With a chart like that, you would think they were selling grocheries online.
