If you want to make any wired network player wireless, there are products available.

You will have a much better time; you can do anything you want without having an RA nag at you. With all the online guides and books available for PC building, just about anyone can build a pc a in day, its really not that hard. I started building them five years ago, and now I'm building budget systems on the side for friends and relatives, padding the price by at least $200 and still beating Dell's prices on their low end systems, but not the ultra low end.

  10. not just developing markets on Why Software Piracy is Good for Microsoft · · Score: 2
Its not just developing markets where piracy could be seen as beneficial for microsoft.

Even in the US, Microsoft would probably prefer people using pirated MS software over using no MS software, as long as they couldn't afford to buy the Software from MS. This is why MS gives millions worth of their products to college students every year. Up to this month, my university had an agreement to give out free ms software including: Office, Windows XP, Visual Studio, and more. This agreement has finally ended, and I can't help to wonder if MS tries use a drug dealer approach to software, to come in to a University and set up an agreement to give away software and then end it after a couple of years in hope that the University will shell out big bucks to keep the agreement.

For the pirates that can't afford MS software, they want then to become accustomed to MS software to the point where when they leave school they will buy computers with the latest version of windows preloaded and more importantly, demand that windows be in their computer at work.

  12. Not True on Flirting With Mac OS X · · Score: 1, Redundant
None of the Windows laptops cut it with battery life or displays so I looked at the iBook.

First of all there is no such thing as a "windows laptop", because X86 can run a variety of operating systems. My PC laptop is a Fujitsu P-2000 and I currently get 7 hours of battery life running Linux on the extended battery. If I take out my media drive and but in the secondary battery I can get 14 hours of battery life.

The brand new powerbook G4 I got from work is lucky if it sees 4 hours.

  13. my reviews on Flirting With Mac OS X · · Score: 2
I received the current top of the line powerbook to do some testing for work. I wrote a little review about it. Its pretty darn fast but for the price of my conifguration, I could buy a 3.5 pound Fujitsu P-2000 and build a top of the line Athlon system with 21in CRT.

So if you really want to go for OSX on a laptop you will probably want to go with an ibook unless you don't find spending the extra money painful. Personally, I will be sticking with my p-2000. It has a full size keyboard, DVD, CD-Burner, Built in Wireless, Firewire and 2 USB all integrated in to a 3.5 pound package.

  14. Limewire on The Best of Windows Open Source Software? · · Score: 2

One tip though, if you are trying to run the latest CVS version in linux, edit the gui/run file and change all the semicolons to colons in order for limewire to run on Linux.

  15. petty on FSF Issues GNU/Linux Name FAQ · · Score: 3, Insightful
Why should the FSF care what the name is as long as Linux is free? Don't we have enough awkward names for free software as it is? I don't see one good reason to use the term GNU/Linux and frankly I find this the FAQ to hardly be in good taste, referring to Linus Torvalds as a posterboy even if they state its "other people's choice." Should Linus have a FAQ that states RMS is a whacked zealot but say that its "other people's choice." It was the FSF "choice" to put an insulting term in the FAQ.

The very nature of the GPL itself allows people to name their software whatever they want as long as they release the source. There are no grounds for changing a name, which is commonly known, to an awkward combination of words. Any marketing guy will tell you should not have a name that people can't pronounce. GNU is certainly a hard name to pronounce and just plain weird. GNU is also to blame for why we have so many poorly named free software projects.

The idea that people should change the name of Linux is in poor taste. Much credit is given to the FSF and all the great work they have done. The FSF can be recognized for the accomplishments without having to change the name of the software which has done more to call attention to the FSF than any other project. If they have a problem with it, then they should make GNU/HURD better than Linux so they can get the recognition that they think they deserve.

I don't even have a mac, but originally I got it working on windows with Xplay and now I can access my ipod through Linux with Xpod. I'm a firm believer in the superiority of the ipod, the design, the interface, and especially the service. Last week after owning my ipod for 9 months, it finally died. I figured I would call apple and see what I could do. Instead of having to go through any hassle, Apple was really smooth.
    • Apple overnights me a box
    • I stick ipod in box
    • I call to have the shipping company pick up box
    • Apple sends me a brand new ipod, arrives 2 days later
That's what I call service, most of the other players I've seen have a very limited warranty and the companies are almost guaranteed to object to a replacement. Apple was amazing and they should be, with the recent release of the ipod for windows, they are bound to get a few converts if they keep that level of service.
