But there is not a mobile phone that is going to replace a dedicated hard drive mp3 layer like the ipod. The interface, storage, and quality would all substandard. As rule of thumb, you never going to get same quality of a stand alone device when trying to create a convergence device. Even the my Ecricson phone can:
Browse the web
Take Pictures
e-mail
instant message
play music
I could do all that with my phone, yet I hardly use any of those features. Instead, on my recent trip to OSCON in Portland, my laptop bag contained:
IBM X31
Canon S400
Ipod
phone
This whole convergence hype has gone way too far, yes there will be lots of features in your basic cell phone and PDA but its not going to replace or come close to matching the quality of a stand alone device.
Regarding the DMCA: you can't fault Apple for using a law on the books
An unjust law is an unjust law and we can fault Apple for using it. If apple existed in the 19th cen tury and used slave labor, would that still be morally acceptable because it was perfectly legal under US law?
The intial night vision problem took a few months, but it disappeared and now my night vision is better than what it was with glasses. The main thing I would recommend is researching the doctors in detail. Don't get it done in a parking lot and don't go for one of these "deals". Your vision is not something that should be trusted to the lowest bidder!
Networks and research projects out there today. Bittorrent is probably one most widely use protocols for public domain content distribution. Furthur is a 100% legal P2P music sharing network for bands that allow taping.
In the academic community, there are quite a few interesting projects going on. I work on a project called LionShare, which is integrating services like authentication, authorization, and directory in to a federated P2P network.
IBM putting one of these 64 bit chips in a highend thinkpad. While I really like the Athlon64 processor, I would not even consider buying anything but a thinkpad for a PC laptop.
I've been using "VFolders" in evolution for at least two years or so now. I wouldn't be surprised if outlook has had such a feature for a long time. Although Google is responsible for inventing a whole slew of tech, smart folders is not one of them.
Even if those figures are correct, which they are most likely inflated, there is not much the industry or government can go to stop P2P file sharing. Decentralized P2P networks such as Gnutella can exist without any centralized or commercial backing.
All of these figures assume that every pirated instalation would result in a sale. The fact is, the majority of people who use pirated software are not potential buyers and those who are probably have a higher probability of purchasing a legitimate copy because of the pirated use.
What's to stop people from mis-using the stops for illegal activity such as Denial of Service, Hacking, etc?
What's to stop people from mis-using any open wifi AP? Open public wifi hotspots are growing like wildfire, so adding a few more isn't going to hurt. An open wifi hotspot does have the potential for misuse but not any more so than a public phone or your local post office.
The main French government action that caused the Bush administration and others on the far right to promote anti-french behavior was the French government's opposition to a second UN resolution, authorizing the use of force in Iraq. There were plenty of other countries that were against the resolution, but France was the only member of the UN security counsel that said it would veto any attempt at a second resolution outright.
Personally, I think what France did was a brave a noble act that should be applauded.
Um, that's actually a totally false "translation." In fact, it's pretty close to the opposite of what I said. If you don't like any of Apple's products just because they are Apple
But apparently I don't like Apple products or Apple yet I purchase them. In the future you might want to do a little research to avoid false conclusions. Start by reading my journal.
If it's not good enough for you and doesn't do what you need, don't buy it. Buy something that does. If there isn't anything else that quite does what you need, why are you bitching about Apple not providing all your products for you
Don't say anything negative about any apple product. Just drink the kool aid or be flamed!
If your using higher bitrate AAC files or Apple lossless it makes sense to have a pure digital out.
You're not going to be playing audio CDs in your powerbook if you care about this sort of thing, because after all, you've got a $1k CD player, right?
Quality is sacrificed for portability, but with a home stereo unit there is a greater expectation of quality than something used on the road. Not for the mass market, but for people who play a lot of music. I'm so sick Apple apologists trying to justify the lack of features in a product. Just look at the thread from my original post. So far the replies are:
Use a laptop for a remote!
typical flame
buy a 12in powerbook!
an informative post about the jack
just use playlists!
Of course every apple product is perfect. I'm sorry for bringing on the wrath of the apple fanboy apologist.
The slimp3, audiotron, and similar devices are in another league compared to this device. Streaming itunes wirelessly is nice but you still need to go back to your computer to change a song. I would not recommend this for home use unless your ok with going back computer every time to change a song.
I really see this as being a great product for sharing the audio on your laptop and playing it on a friend's stereo. But this device doesn't even come close to what a slimp3 or a Roku Soundbridge can do.
One thing missing from this device is a real optical out. I'm sorry but going analog mini jack -> digi optical doesn't make any sense.
For kiosk and public use stuff but one thing I would recommend ditching is the puck mice. The puck mouse was one of the worst design decisions ever to come out of Apple.
Limewire 4.0 recently came out, its been a GPLed OSS project for years. The Limewire teams works with the Gnutella Dev community to create open standards, and the limewire servent runs on all major platforms out of the box.
I live in the relatively small town of State College, PA. Besides wifi at home, work, and certain spots around the campus, there are a lot of businesses who now offer free wifi access. So far the grocery store cafe, two coffee/lunch places, and four restaurants offer free wifi access for their customers. I wrote about in some detail here and here.
Debian on the servers. Seriously, after the whole Redhat EOL debacle, I stopped relying on commercial distros for my Linux needs. Both distros have huge packaging systems and sport the ability to upgrade to major OS updates with one simple command.
On the desktop end, I prefer gentoo because it is more lenient with accepting non-free packages and packages with potential legal issues. I also like the optimization abilities of a source based distro. As a java developer, Gentoo is simply the best Linux distro for Java developement. The major jre's are integrated in to the packaging system and the java-config utility allows me to easily switch from multiple jres on the fly.
On the server side, debian provides stability and quality control. Contrary to popular myth, there are quite a few pay support options available for debian.
Remember 15+ years ago when a lot of products would feature in advertisements that they were made in the USA? A lot of it was a reaction to perceived threat from Japan and the thought of NAFTA. In current times that is a rarity, globalization aside. Even though people are buying Mercedes made in Alabama and tech support from India, it would be interesting to see a return of promotional campaign designed to promote goods made in the US. Perhaps there can be a similar campaign designed to promote companies that don't use overseas labor?
Among the new features is Apple Lossless Encoding, which claims to compress losslessly to half the size of uncompressed CD quality audio.
Why not support open standards and open source and use FLAC? Looks like another apple "innovation" that is just a copy of another product, in this case FLAC, SHN.

Also, the book reviewed is available on Amazon for four dollars less. Don't pay the /. tax.

Is there any word on a port to OSX?

I would go with the Roku HD1000. The Roku seems to have a lot more features and a better design.

I think its great that the Shareaza dev decided to GPL his code but it does not make up for the gnutella2 fiasco and domain hijack.

When I think "made in the usa" I mean the bulk of the manufacturing taking place in the US, not the origin of individual components.
