This is exactly the kind of story that I hope to avoid by reading slashdot, news about nerdy stuff, computers, internet, video games. Unless they're planning to take away our video games because of this, or they're planning to make a video game about it, it doesn't belong here. There's other websites to talk about normal news.

First of all, all you folks who said they need to test it in a controlled environment, that's been done out in the open, on North America. Second, obviously they should only do it if the individuals making the decisions get bribed well enough. This is some really dangerous shit. A mere $10k bale of US Benjamin's is not enough to turn a blind eye or say nothing to the press. You need a million. Maybe ten.

I think having devices in the hands of citizens that are actually useful during an emergency and aren't sold with that functionality switched off is exactly the kind of reason to have regulation of the sale of such devices.
If we leave it up to free market, then when it comes time to check the radio for emergency evacuation information, those who picked up the "Cheap" hardware are going to experience Free Market Darwinism.
    Just to recap:
    • Mandating cellular devices allow "lawful" intercept and Orwellian style surveillance of citizens: BAD
    • Mandating cellular devices be shipped with their FM tuners switched on, thus allowing citizens to become informed of lifesaving details during an emergency, thus saving hundreds of thousands of lives, or even millions: GOOD

I get by tho. I Had to run out and purchase some bluetooth headphones, and I still use the internal speakers, or hook it up via HDMI.

So basically what I'm saying is it will have the exact effect Apple Corporate wants. Using their near monopoly on the market for spiffy mac portables which have suddenly become trendy, not like the previous 25 years of my fanboi-dom, to force purchases and extract more profits from already stretched thin consumers at the cost of functionality is an unforgivable sin. They've been doing it in their software, and now they do it in their hardware. I'm done with you Apple. I'm putting linux on this mac, I already use linux on my desktop, and I'm never buying another of your products. I hope all readers do the same.
