What language do you use when you're not using Perl?;) Seriously, are there aspects of other languages you've considered adding to Perl? If so, what languages? What features?
It's the same with people looking at their watch. Ask someone who checked their watch what time it is, and see how many have to check again.
It's a matter of getting from the medium what you need. In the case of your watch, it's usually "how long until the next thing I have to do?" Most people don't need the information provided by commercials so that information is quietly discarded.

But it sounds like you'll be reinstalling Windows. Hard to take you too seriously...
Not trying to troll, but it sounds like you are going to do what I bet 90% of/. users do every day: bitch about MS, then use their products in some personal capacity. It's a cost to benefit analysis: the benefits to you of using Windows outweigh the risks of trusting "a company that surreptitiously modified the EULA."
I've said it before, I will say it again... it's got to be more than just spit and venom. Stop using their products, or don't complain.
This is a cool story, yes, and an even cooler solution to an existing problem. But I think we (Slashdot) need to be a bit more responsible about thinking to sites like this. Can we possibly think that a rural network like this can sustain a Slashdotting?
Linking to the MSNBC story should be plenty to get the point across. Why waste these folks network?
We have one. The difference is the mobization of others behind him or against him in constructive ways. As a whole, we talk more than do. African American lobbies like those you described do more than talk, which lends their leaders more weight.
My freedom, blah, blah, blah... out of touch legislators blah blah blah. Wanna even a chance to be heard?
1. Fill out this form. Really. Don't just read the comments, and don't just post here. Take a minute and write a thoughtful, well argued comment. Senators don't give a damn what people on Slashdot are saying, but they'll give a damn if it's on their own fancy website.
2. Vote with your vote. Get the hell out there and support candidates that see through all of this crap. As a community, we rant and rave that the whole system is munged then turn around and skip the vote en masse. Ever wonder why no one wants to mess with Social Security? Talk to this very consistent voting group. Senators listen to votes, not money. They only listen to money because it helps them buy more votes. Don't vote? Don't complain.
3. Vote with your dollar. If you rant, then continue to support these businesses, you have no one to blame but yourself. Just as politicians only respond to votes, most businesses only respond to money.
It's got to be more than talk, guys. If we don't start backing any of this up, we'll just be the cranky tech curmudgeons who desperately hang on to the antiquated notion of "freedom."
Even if it is as good as [yahoo/altavista], its still not going to kill it. [Yahoo/Altavista], is the search engine everyone knows and loves. Unless this engine comes out with some great feature like reading your mind instead of you needing to type, It's not gona take away too much of [yahoo/altavista]'s, traffic.

Comrades,
We offer you some of our new software which is as strong and reliable as your venerable Berlin Wall. May the Communist Party, founded on the ideals of Lenin and supported by MS SQL Server(tm), reign for another century.
Selling a Windows box from which you've removed access to the world's most entrenched browser would be financially stupid. Like MS or not, IE is the standard... experienced users can get around IE installed anyway, and new users will be pissed that you removed the program that all their friends and relatives have.
Very exciting hearing about all the porting being done to Dreamcast. We're right around the corner from having a solid GUI interface to this architecture. Then, with a little more work, we can move exciting games like Tux Racer to Dreamcast *nix. Who knows? Maybe it will be a good gaming platform too...

Except that there is little money to be made on the hardware. If you are buying the Xbox and not the games, MS isn't making much money.

Just don't go to the sites that force them on you anymore. No plug in, browser, or technical changes required whatsoever.
Wait... you mean you want to see the news, etc., these sites provide? Maybe then the ad is a very small price to pay.
